EU Is TOO WEAK For Peace. No NATO Troops In Ukraine | Hungary's Political Director Balázs Orbán

FULL INTERVIEW: Balázs Orbán, the political director of Hungary's Prime Minister explains why Hungary, despite being a loyal NATO member, will not participate in Out of Area missions of the alliance and how Hungary plans to navigate the emerging multi-polar world order.
Today I have the very special privilege of talking to a fellow European who doesn’t only think about foreign policy, but is actively involved in making it on the highest levels. I’ve got with me Dr. Balázs Orbán, the Political Director of Hungary’s Prime Minister, Viktor Orban (and no, the two are not related, they just share the same last name). Dr. Balázs Orbán earned his doctorate in Jurisprudence from ELTE-aka the University of Budapest-and holds also a degree in political science. He has been working at the office of the Prime Minister since 2018, becoming his political director in 2021 and he also won a seat in the Hungarian Parliament in 2022. In addition, Dr. Orban also published a book called “Hussar Cut: The Hungarian Strategy for Connectivity”, in which he lays out what I would call a realism-based strategy for a prosperous Hungarian foreign policy that is not tethered to one or the other power block but to many nations at once, linking them all as a key-stone.

  • NO, sorry but your guest is incorrect...Russia did NOT attack a "sovereign country" it attacked Ukraine and it was provoked into said attack, of which Ukraine is NOT a "sovereign country" as everyone now knows the Americans hand -picked that government which means it is not "sovereign"!!!

  • With all due respect to this guest, all I've seen from NATO is aggression, not defensive. The organization never keeps its word and breaks promises left and right. Russia as a nation has far more legitimacy and its fight in Ukraine is fully justified. He mentioned about the West keeing its leadership but the truth of the matter is that the Global South doesn't want the US and allies to dominate world affairs anylonger. They lost that right and there is no way they are getting it back now.

  • How is this conflict an "old conflict between two Slavic nations" when Ukraine officially declared itself an independent country on the 24th of August, 1991? The Ukrainian military backed by America/NATO attacked the Donbass region in 2014 and thus started a civil war in their own land (this was one of America's many illegal coup d'états or color revolutions since WWII). Due to violations of promises and agreements and an escalation of this civil war Russia did what the Russians saw as the only solution to this artificial made conflict, a conflict that is a proxy war between America and Russia, it has little to nothing to do with Ukraine. Morally the people in Europe do not agree with that a country's military (or police) shall attack its population, no, absolutely not! Interfering in a sovereign nation state's internal affairs, what America and NATO did in Ukraine in 2014 and even before that, is illegal according to international law, and it is about time that officials in all the countries start to learn and publicly demonstrate that they know in the least basic parts of international law. Look at what is happening to Israel and America now, both becoming a pariah in the world, losing all respect and credibility, with the ongoing genocide in Gaza...

  • IThere is a glaring similarity between how the Europeans view both the Russia- Ukraine war and the Israel-Gaza war. In the case of the Israel-Gaza war, Europeans think that the problem started only on October 07, 2023 with the Hamas attack on Israel, forgetting the Israeli brutal treatment of more than 2 million Palestinians besieged in a concentration camp for nearly 2 decades. Similarly, Europeans think that the Russsia-Ukraine conflict began only in February 2022 when Russia embarked on its "special military operation" against Ukraine. They forget the fact that the Russians had been warning for more than 30 years that Ukraine joining NATO is an existential threat to them and that they will do everything to stop that from happening. But the U S and its allies were thumbing their noses at Russia and were not taking Russia's warnings seriously. Amnesia is convenient on some matters but, in both instances, amnesia has caused needless human suffering on a large scale!

Trump wants Europe to bear a greater financial responsibility for NATO and he wants Europe to provide more bodies to any military operations by NATO. Anyone who thinks Donald Trump would seriously consider turning over control of NATO to anyone else obviously hasn't paid attention to anything Trump has said or done over the past 50 years. Although one could argue that the words of Obama concerning the Minsk accords went in that direction in 2014, the side meeting of (amongst others) Nuland, Pompeo and (I believe) McCain at the Munich conference of the same year reveals otherwise. I refer to a video of Aaron Maté of the Grayzone on the subject. Hungary is not against the Palestinians, but against the crazy concept that a group of people, which is not part of a sovereign nation with its own territory, can be allowed as such to a body like the UN is supposed to be. I sympathize with Palestinians, but legally it is preposterous and opens a nasty can of worms. It creates a situation which will spiral out of control. Tomorrow the American Indigenous people follows, then the Maoris, Aborigines, many groups in India, for that matter, hundreds of groups all over the world. The list goes on and on. It will be fair, in my opinion, but legally unsustainable.

  • This was an interesting conversation. The Hungarian and other European governments are afraid of the shift in economic power distribution in favor of Global South if the unipolarity gives way to a new power structure. Thus the support for the Ukrainian conflict. Professor Glenn Diesen gives a good articulation of this.

  • *Saying that Russia invaded Ukraine & that defines the conflict, is essentially the reason people can't think!* Yes, initially any human would side with Ukraine, that's normal, it's the initial emotional response. *However, after emotions die down, the brain should take over and see it's not that simple, shades of gray!* This is why I do object to what Orban is saying about the War, although I generally agree with him otherwise.

  • The central European country Mr.Orban was hinting on is obviously Poland. I know exactly that some very clever people in Poland, openly talk about their geopolitical strategy is not only to weaken Russia, but to push its border past the Ural mountans or in the ideal World they would prefer that Russia didnt exist at all. They refer to Kaliningrad as "Kroliewiec" and seriously talking about different strategies to push the Russians out of there. I learned Polish language in UK and I listen to these people seriously debate these things.

  • It's so baffling how many similarities there are between how Europe is run today and the Soviet Union of old. People are chosen into positions because of their loyalty to the party line, people act irrationally because it's dictated by ideology, people cannot speak the truth if it does not align with the ideologically accepted interpretation of reality. which obviously breeds incompetence. The list goes on and on.

  • I found it very disappointing that Mr. Orbán seems to think that Russia started the conflict in 2022 by "invading a sovereign country". Firstly, whatever traces of sovereignty Ukraine used to have were completely wiped out by the USA in 2014 when the entire government in Kiev was handpicked by Nuland and her cronies, having overthrown the legally elected government. Secondly, this conflict started with decades of USA interference and subversion of Ukraine coupled with deliberate provocation of Russia. I am amazed that Mr. Orbán fails to acknowledge this.

  • Balazs Orban is absolutely right about the West can no longer dominate world politics and the rise of non-West is now and will have louder “SAY” about global affairs. The Hungarian is smart to pick up the sense early while most Western countries still entrapped in neoliberal or neoconservative ideological crap such as democracy vs autocracy, freedom vs oppression …etc. It’s realism to see two undisputable facts; firstly, center of global development and trade is moving to the East or Pacific and secondly Western model is no longer the only model for success which China’s success had demonstrated a different workable option. In conclusion, it’s the diversity and multiplicity together that makes the world better and we humans must not forget any good merits accumulated from diversified civilization.

  • The venerable Mr Orbán overlooks the economic motivations the EU has to continue the Ukraine war. A German minister (can't remember which one - economic? industry?) stated, during a televised interview, that the EU must secure the mineral-rich Donbas region for itself. Considering how strapped Europe is for natural resources, this must be their prime motivation to continue.

    @user-ps2nn5pj4g@user-ps2nn5pj4g10 күн бұрын
    • The EU has all the access to Russia's natural resources it needs. The problem with Western capital, the interests of which the EU represents, is that it wants to own, not buy. As a certain Russian gentleman once observed, imperialism is the highest form of capitalism. They were looking for a fire-sale in Ukraine, and they got a bloody nose instead. Now they're throwing good money after bad.

However, upon comparing their government to others on an international scale, it becomes clear that Viktor Orbán's administration is one of the best, if not the best, in the world !!! Hungary has also a large Jewish community that answers on your Palestine topic - deal with it.

  • Hungary's position appears to be to refuse to be a prisoner of the dilemma: "If it does not confront Russia, NATO will be demoralized and will cease to exist. If confrontation occurs, Europe, the US and Russia will cease to exist and this would force the Russians to retreat because they don't want to be exterminated in a nuclear war." In Brazil we have a saying: "What cannot have a solution (like the Ukrainian war), is solved." We Brazilians are descendants of Europeans, indigenous peoples and Africans who were enslaved and brought to a Portuguese colony. There is nothing pure in Brazil. Everything here is the result of miscegenation, nothing can be or will be pure: the Brazilian geographic, cultural and economic space is open and cannot be closed. Coexistence among Brazilians is not easy, but it is possible. Because of this, we Brazilians believe that coexistence between Americans, Europeans, Russians, Chinese and aliens (this is obviously ironic) may be possible, although it is not easy. Yes, we will also probably be killed by radiation poisoning if a nuclear war between NATO and Russia occurs even though we did not cause the conflict. In this sense, we understand Hungary's position, because the Hungarians know that they will be collateral victims in a nuclear war that they do not want. And like Hungary, Brazil does not, has not and will not supply weapons to Ukraine. No one will be able to force Brazilians to interfere in this conflict. But Brazil is not part of NATO and in this sense we have more freedom than Hungary, because if NATO declares war against Russia and the Hungarians refuse to fulfill their obligations they will be treated as enemies of NATO. The dilemma that guides the Hungarians' position, seen from the perspective of Brazilians, does not exist: Hungary is part of the conflict in one way or another, even if Russia respects the neutrality of the Hungarians, they will not be treated as neutral by NATO.
