  • The San-Ti / Trisolarians are extremely unimaginative: Hoard food. Build underground. Have "people" in stasis. If you can build Sophons during a million years, you can explore many nearby stars for habitable planets and you already don't have to worry about cryogenics or other ways to keep people alive during very long space journeys. There's no need for conflict, especially if the basis for behaviour is "Dark Forest" theory.

    @Emanon...@Emanon...Ай бұрын

    • 1. The creation of Sophons were not an easy feat for them, it was in fact, as revolutionary. It took multiple times in creating the first sophon alone, which nearly caused the destruction of the entire planet due to the unpredictability of playing with higher dimensions. So no, they couldn't just build millions of sophons if they wanted to. Moreover, the Sophons were created when they realized that humans were advancing EXPONENTIALLY. 2. Why bother with cryogenics when the book/show itself explicitly shows that they can rehydrate/hydrate at will? That's essentially their version of cryogenics. Look at what happened to the 2nd Trisolaran fleet by the third book, and you’ll realize why interstellar migration is still dangerous. 3. Remember, Trisolaris is highly chaotic due to the unstable orbit of the 3 suns. Hell, in the book, there were originally 10 other planets residing in the star system. Overtime, they were consumed by the stars. Both the books and show explicitly said that one day the planet would suffer a Chaotic Era so catastrophic that they will probably be never be able to rebuild/evolve again. So even if they built something outside of the planet but WITHIN the system, more often than not it would have the same fate, albeit much quicker.

  • I feel like Netflix had to make major changes so as not to get sued by the studio that made the "three Body" Chinese TV adaptation. I personally like the Chinese TV series that sticks closer to the source material, all though the Chinese TV show got a little wonky when with their special effects. If they are trying to making it appealing to English viewers they should just have kept it closer to the source material and leveraged the Netflix money to edge out in the special effects area. I mean in the Netflix version that had to split the main lead's roll into like 3-4 different ppl, and rushed through some of the deeper portions of the story. At those point, if the Netflix version keeps a decent viewership base then we might get further into the novel material then the Chinese version. For reference the Chinese adaptation stopped before the aliens revealed themselves to humanity.

Faith is a danger to such enemies, of course like any tool, it can be manipulated and misused; science should not be worshipped as faith…that much is true, though science too is a valuable tool, balance is always necessary - that too is a key element to the original culture of China, before they were overthrown, infected, enslaved, and told lies (to this day).

What took us hundreds of years or less, must have taken them hundreds more or 10's of thousands of years to achieve. The trainer confirmed this when they said to Jen, we are walking into our own funeral precetion by the time they would arrive on Earth. Hence why the Sophon's were created to stunt our growth so they could conquer us on arrival vs annihilation.

    • Hm, I'm not sure I agree with your view that the Dark Forest concept is anthropomorphic. From memory, it's grounded in the view that there are limited resources for which all parties compete -- and only those that do so stealthily will survive. So, one could argue that the DF is rather the consequence of (cosmic) natural selection processes playing out. Of course, we (humans) too are the result of natural selection, so it's perhaps not surprising that the DF idea makes sense to us. But only because we sympathise with the view that the concept makes sense does not make it anthropomorphic. Does it? :)

    • @0MG.N0 The Dark Forrest hypothesis implicitly assumes that an alien civilisation acts as one entity with a coherent behaviour over a very long period of time. That is simply not very likely - and even if it applies to one species (maybe some kind of alien queen that somehow controls all other individuals), it does definitely not apply to all species. Yes, there might be a world government one day that can make all factions or countries comply to a possible CETI ban. But on the way to that future, there will be many more attempts to communicate with alien civilisations.

  • This seems like a dumbed down, wokeified version of the book/chinese series. The original was a bit drawn out, but made you guess and think. This just hands you the mystery plot points on a silver platter. I wonder if they thought the audience was too dumb, or the writers/localizers were too dumb to do it right.

The idea that someone can say things that aren't real is probably pretty alarming to them. I believe in the books it's pretty open-ended whether they were really willing to coexist at all.

      @apov6093@apov6093Ай бұрын
    • The whole premise of 'The Dark Forest' is that all races in the universe are in a 'Prisoners Dilemma'. It would be best for all races to cooperate, but if just one race chooses to destroy other races, then the best move is to strike first and destroy other races before they can destroy you. The fact that SOME races will believe this way makes it more urgent and likely for ALL races to be forced to act this way. It is possible for a race to remotely send destruction to any star system and impossible to defend against it. This asymmetry makes all races "hide" in silence, as a message sent out announces their location to the other races. Humanity is in a somewhat unique position because the race closest to us is the Trisolarians who cannot stay hiding in their solar system because it is unstable. The Trisolarians must migrate to a habitable system to survive, forcing them to choose conquest or cooperation instead of just sending destruction from afar like is it presumed other races would do. (and it is shown in a later book that indeed other races send destruction as soon as they know of another races location).

    • I really hope not. The ending of Deaths End kinda leaves it open to the imagination. The parts about Yun Tianming are interesting but since the guy that's portraying him is a blend of characters from the books so there's no need for it lol. I do hope they at least give the next 2 a shot. It baffles me how they could film most of imagery that's depicted but it would still be fascinating to see especially the Dual Vector Foil! I've read that the Tencent adaptation will be continuing with 2 and 3 so if you haven't had the chance to see it it's worth the time as it's a truer adaptation but Western audiences need the action and character to drive the narrative so hopefully Netflix can pull it off

      @jimliu2560@jimliu2560Ай бұрын
    • @@jimliu2560 Nice one ;-) But...from a scientific standpoint: unfortunately not! The "problem" with a 3-body problem is that there is no way of predicting the local positions of three bodies in their interacting gravitational fields. You can only aproximate from one point in time to the next, making it a algorithmic problem, but not one with a universal formular where you can simply plug in numbers. So: by destroying one of their suns, they cannot predict the effects it would have on their planet. The behaviour of the system would be chaotic, and might result in undesireable effects that cannot be predicted beforehand. In fact, it's even picked up in the series, because they test human scientists, in trying to find out, if humanity has a solution to the problem. So - no, destroying one sun is not a plot hole, but consitent with current science.
