Huawei Mate 60 Pro Hands-On: The Phone That Escalates US/China Tension

The Huawei Mate 60 Pro is a very controversial and important phone, because it's more than just a phone. It's currently the center of a US/China geopolitical beef right now. Basically, this phone came out of nowhere to run on Huawei's own SoC, an act that the US government thought was not possible. But beyond the drama, this phone has a really damn good camera too -- of course I tried it out.
And also, does this phone support 5G networks? I think it does.

Man, I missed the time when Huawei was still competing with Samsung and Apple, those are the days..., and one day US decided to be salty af
Totally agree with you! I've used the Huawei Mate 20 Pro and Galaxy S10+ at the same time and battery life, camera performance was way better on the Mate 20 Pro. I use the S22Ultra now, but miss Huawei. If Huawei wasn't ban, I wouldn't have switched to Samsung.
Yup. And putting Apple and Samsung on a downward loser poll.
A private company vs the entire US government supported by their European puppets is just amzing. More so the Chinese govt hardly do anything . Really tough to be a successful Chinese company .

All politics aside, I would love to see Huawei back in the UK, I was a huge fan of the product, and the moment it's back I'll be looking to get one,
I'm in UK to. I totally suggest you to crack on with Huawei. You can still buy new one(suddenly no contract deals) or use CEX. I know they are used, but it's coming with 24 months guarantee anyway. So safe deal. Literally beat Android phone in my opinion. I like that software the most
You should try, its very good
I'd love to see it back in the US as well. I'm still hanging onto my p30 lite.
4 years later, my Huawei Mate 20 is still my back up phone. It has fantastic battery life and works as smooth as the first day I got it. I'm hoping to jump back to Huawei one day.
I got my Huawei mate 30 over 3 years ago and is till working as good, have no intention to swap phone yet, but perhaps mate 60 pro or pro+ or mate X5 when the price has gone down a bit.

Why China so boasting about 5G??? I have it now and does it make my life better no. Do i feel any difference with what i do? NO. What a bullshit political BS. The reality: Western machines & software are used to make this chip. SMIC uses ASML machines from the Netherlands to make these chips. The DUV can do 7nm chips. I'm still using my Mate 20 X after 5 years. Still love this phone. Hardware on the Mate 60 looks great. Kindest regards, Richard U.K
The last Huawei phone I used was the Mate 20 Pro. And man, i love that phone. Huawei was beating everyone in terms of innovation during those times. Makes you wonder what they would’ve achieved right now if there was no ban on them.
I still have a P30 Pro and the phone is fast, the battery last 1 and a half day, photos are good. But I need to change my phone because it won't be updated anymore and because cameraphones nowadays costs 1,000€ (I paid 549€ for the P30 Pro in 2019), it will be a real pain in the a... to find a flagship paying a human price.

Look at what Huawei developed during the past 4 years of sanction: Harmony OS (for smartphone and IoT), Guass DB (proprietary full stack software and hardware), EDA (14nm 100% certified, advanced process under testing), Meta ERP (to replace SAP), Kirin 5G SOC, Lithography related technology, 5.5G technology, Kun Peng AI Processor, Pangu AI Models 3.0, Euler OS (for servers). From the standpoint of the consumer is actually great that the US tried to kick Huawei to the curb.. Now they're back with their own software and hardware and thats REAL competition (better than being just another Android phonemaker). They're not quite there yet but its only a matter of time...
I bought Huawei phone, tablet and router years ago, till today they are working absolutely excellent, their built quality is premium second to none. Usually most Android phones work slower after years of usage but Huawei is just working same fast as brand new.
This is a georgeous device. I had the Mate 40 Pro, and it was awesome, but this is even better.
Just out of interest how was the experience of using the P40, which was launched after the ban? Live in the UK and still using my P20 as was last one before the ban? Struggling to upgrade as can't download most Apps I need day to day directly from Huawei Galary.

Huawei doing 5G better than the west and US decides to cease their operations just goes to shows how fast Huawei's innovations are compared to even the west. And shows how better Chinese are at innovating and reverse engineering. Outside of that, I do think Huawei has better connectivity than even Samsung, Apple, Google and some Chinese brands. Going back to my hometown or some rural areas I do noticed how good reception is with Huawei than others since I can still get some receptions while others are dead. As for this phone, somehow the triple camera punch hole still looks cleaner than the iPhone 14 Pro's dynamic island. It's actually my favourite design choices of this phone.
I agree, my Mate 20 Pro had significantly better connectivity than my Samsung. What the USA has done to Huawei will be studied by academics in years to come.
Reverse engineering 🤡 the West just can't compete
I completely agree with you on this, from my own personal experience having owned several phones over the years from various brand's Huawei has always been rock solid with their connectivity, phone reception has been better for me than Samsung or other Chinese brands!
My mate 20 basic is still as fast as the day they released.
It's all about how much R&D one company wants to put in. The more, the better (more signal reception capability). China has cost advantage, compared to western countries; plus, the market expectation (China AND BRICS+ AND BRI countries) is larger, thus, able to sell more, thus Return on Investment is easier than their western counterparts.
Great description and explanation of the tele-macro function and usage/comparison. Thanks!

This is no pro-China, pro-US comment, just a tech enthusiast. It's despicable though, that politicians although dividing people through warmongering and forever wars have now brought the hurt to people in civilian daily life and technology. I've never envisaged this. I'm ok with competition, fair competition, but by getting to work and creating the better product and let the consumer decide. If we're taking this political rivalry across many different sectors then it crushes my optimism for a safe, peaceful future.

Honestly this is a great thing in my opinion. Huawei has proven how true dedication to make a good product affects the market. We should demand more from big tech, and allow for free market and constant innovation. They are just smarter.

Ben, always enjoyed your reviews. Thanks! I'm quite interested in this Huawei Mate 60 Pro as well. However, one major talking point about this phone that you failed to mention is the satellite call function. No doubt, you probably can't use it outside of China, but it's the 1st phone to have such a function. Also, so glad Huawei is making a comeback. Samsung has been getting lazy on top of the android world without Huawei challenging them. On the other hand, it seems Huawei is totally doing away with google. So even with Huawei back in the game, Samsung is still not being challenged. Xiaomi, Vivo and Oppo will have to work harder to achieve that.

I have been waiting for a discussion on Apps available for the Harmony OS used in this phone. You have come closest with a small note at the end of your video. It appears you said that Harmony OS cannot use Apps designed for Android. As a modern phone is now used for many other uses than just a phone or camera, it appears this phone has a way to go to offer a genuine alternative to an Android or iPhone. I hope this does not take long, as I would willing have one of these phones if I knew it could have access to alternative Apps.
