TROLLS ARE REAL! The ancient roots of the Troll myth

In this video, I explain how most of us are related to trolls, or at least how we are genetically connected to the origin myth of trolls. Though mind you: This should be considered a hypothesis based on recent DNA evidence and the early history of Northern Scandinavia.

I didn't mention it in the video, but the two genes for light pigmentation (fair skin), which the late Scandinavian Hunter-Gatherers (SHG) had - and the Indo-Europeans (IE) did not - made it an advantage to survive and thrive this far north, because of Vitamin D deficiency. And this also fits in with the SHG genetic bottleneck that is possible to trace in the early Bronze Age. The SHG must have migrated northwards into the mountains and darkness in dire times and south again in better times, and it wasn't until the IE populations (and the farmers) mixed with the SHG that they too were able to survive and get along well in Scandinavia, becoming our common, distant ancestors.
Another point worth mentioning are the two time periods with huge climate crisis and plague: The Late Bronze Age Collapse 3.000 years ago and the devastating 6th century 1.500 years ago, when both memories and traditions were stirred up, so many peoples and cultures died, language changed (Grimm's and Verner's laws and the later Elder to Younger Futhark), followed by new trading routes, migrations and new powers rising. With this in mind, it's a miracle our ancestors could remember anything at all from these ancient giants.
So could our earliest written sources and mythical stories about love and war - and a lot of cunningness and trickery - between the Jotuns and (non-deified) Norse Gods have any historical truth, going back 2.500-4.500 years and blended in with Indo-European myths?

  • It's an exciting idea to see trolls as part of a foundational myth, inspired by a real people. Is there evidence from the more southern Germanic peoples (i.e. lower than Denmark) that coincides with the Scandinavian concept of trolls, e.g. in fairytales? I do recall giants in the stories of the Grimm brothers, but not a link with darkness, or them being part of a shared family tree. Then again, I believe that a lot of what we think to know about the broader Germanic culture and its pantheon, was inferred from Scandinavian sources, so trolls may have been a part of the collective Germanic mythology before it got lost or took on another form.

  • Interesting insights ! I previously read trolls are basically the spirit of nature or ghosts in general before it was commercialised and turned into a fairytale figure, so your perspective is an interesting perspective on this topic. It feels like trolls are an amalgam of old concepts really, though I sense through the studies of prechristian mythology that everything was seen as an holistic concept and not "only this and only that" but more like patterns that repeat above and below, in us and outside of us, as individuals and gods and mere biology as well. Do you have thoughts on the "Nine Daughters of Ægir and Rán" / Forejotre ?

  • Troll Hunter is great! Ash Lad is great! And there is actually a children's cartoon on Netflix (ehhh) called Hilda. It is about a young girl named Hilda who moved to Trolberg from the countryside. Trolberg is a city behind a big wall that was constructed to keep Trolls out. It has some other so called folklore of the region like elves and creatures made of wood and a giant Raven. It has of course a bunch of feminist crap and eco crap (the corporate/msm brand of eco messaging). But it's still very cute and introduced my son to story of Trolls. Which got him to watch Ash Lad.

  • Ƿes þu hal. My hypothesis is that the creation story is, in essence, an oral retelling of eye witness accounts, by our ancestors, of the withdrawal of the ice shields/glaciers of the most recent glaciation event, as well as volcanism and/or cosmic impact, hence the fire and ice theme. This would nicely explain the World being born of Ymir's (ice giant/retreating glacier) decaying form. Auðumbla can be interpreted a metaphor for the domestication of cattle and would have had an enormous impact on paleolithic societies emerging from the Ice Age and thus be the stuff of legend. Giants could also refer to Homo Neanderthalensis (known to have shared habitats and interbred with "Homo Sapiens") whom were physically more robust and stronger than anatomically modern humans. As far as I am aware, the term "giant", as used in European mythological contexts, does not have to specifically refer to an individual's physical height, but can also refer physical strength, prowess and endurance. So the stories of Giants, Trolls and other mythical beings may well have been remembered accounts of interspecies contact and interaction. Proud of my Germanic heritage and would like to see an end to conflict among our extended tribes, but alas...

  • Maybe because they where so far north and they had access to such a rich diet in the food they could gather, maybe they got bigger for the short periods of light that did come, if you need to absorb more vitamin D then if you have a bigger surface area of skin to absorb the vitamin D this might well be a trigger for giantism. I think it also has something to do with the cold, as the Polynesians they went and settled on Hawaii but their first colony was nearly wiped out by a huge tsunami so they supposedly left Hawaii and went to Alaska and lived in Alaska for around 1200 years and they think its this period in Alaska that gave rise to their super sized people. After 1200 years they went back to Hawaii and repopulated it, but the Pacific Islanders dont half produce some really big people, so it could be a combination as Alaska is very much the same as Scandinavia in terms of climate and food resources, coming from Hawaii i bet it was a shock to their system the drop in vitamin D and the total change in diet to maybe a full rich protein diet compared with the foods they ate that grew on the Islands and then the months of freezing weather it seems it doesnt take long to trigger growth in people...

  • Jeg fant en interessant beretning fra kartet "Fra Mauro Map", som er fra rundt år 1450. Om Norge står det "Norvegia [Norway] is a very vast province surrounded by the sea and joined to Svetia [Sweden]. Here they produce no wine or oil, and the people are strong, robust and of great stature. Similarly, in Svetia the men are very fierce; and according to some, Julius Caesar was not eager to face them in battle. Similarly, these peoples were a great affliction to Europe; and at the time of Alexander, the Greeks did not have the courage to subjugate them. But now they are much diminished and do not have the reputation they formerly had. Here is said to be the body of St. Bridgit, who some say was from Svetia. And it is also said there are many new kinds of animals, especially huge white bears and other savage animals."

  • I think more jätte-jotun-gigant are a langue development and continuation of klassical titan. In this way there is a similarity between the titans in classic mythologi an jotuns in nordic. The brakteats etc mention laug then would mean loki of jotun ancestry. This would explain why saturday became laugarday, not wash day, but lokis day. The different jotuns are then a rememberance of the titans i mythologi two thousand years earlier. Who would be prometeus? (Edited)

The ravens and Titans names have related meanings and there is even a raptor (eagle) in the legend of Prometheus’ punishment. I wonder if these are all echoes of an earlier indo-europaean mythology ?

  • I always wonder, knowing how in the viking age, many still considered Finns to be some kind of fey creature, whether the races of magicians (jötnar) and old gods (Vanir) may have a lot to do with the Nordic Bronze Age people. In the myths, the intermarriage and peace between the Aesir and Vanir is given a lot of importance, along with the pacification of the jötnar. It seems like similar themes are likely have been a part of their history, with the arrival of iron age people, whose population and culture merged with the existing ones (through unknown mechanisms), rather than destroying them. Also strikes me as a funny coincidence, at least, that the _Götar,_ _Goter,_ _Gutar_ and _Jutar_ seem to belong to a pattern that almost includes Jötnar._ On the other hand, may be more than a coincidence that the Scythians and their neighbouring Getae (who were skilled metalworkers) seem to have disappeared from Ukraine and the Carpathians at about the time that the iron age reached Scandinavia and that the Byzantines referred to vikings as "Scythians", while some of the vikings knew themselves by those various G-t- names. All of the gods' magical stuff was made by jötnar and alfar - so maybe the main group of iron age invaders were not confident metalworkers and they relied either on outsiders to make prized artifacts.

  • Here in America we have dug up skeletons as tall as 9ft tall. W/ red hair, 6 fingers, 6 toes & double rows of teeth. Im half Native American myself & my ancestors bones are 7.5 ft tall w/ 24 digits & double rows of teeth. I had to have an extra row of teeth removed as a child as well. We all age rather slowly in my family as well. Im 40 & people think i look 20.

  • Everything is connected. Look at what is being found in the amazon jungle, or in egypt. The history of the world is much more facinating, than what the official narrative wants you to believe. But why....?

  • It’s just like when you mix a tiger with a lion and get a cat with gigantism. Every culture has a story about a big hairy humanoid beast. They all stole women and children, and I’m assuming had these warrior babies at first until it got mixed out the blood. I think their sudden appearance is the true reason they called it the dark ages. I’m what most call black but I’m actually Choctaw American, and our people have a story too and call the beast the Shampe that followed us from the east. I think Mongolians definitely have a similar origin to you guys as well putting the Asian in Caucasian. Europe simply calls him the wild man/woodwose, science calls them Neanderthals, and now I learned you guys call em trolls. The caveman history lessons all make sense, and people going clubbing is just disturbing now 🫣

  • Germanic refers to all of us. It was just what the latins called us all. Norse is a term that came in the early medieval period to designate Scandinavians at the time. I see no issue with us all being called Germanic. Unless you want to say English, Dutch, and German are West Scandinavian languages instead of West Germanic languages I would stop trying to challenge the terminology. Makes more sense to call norse people Northern Germanic since norse just means north and was a word used by western Germanic people to describe northern Germanic people.

  • So where are all the skeletons and artifacts for these giant trolls? Buddy, just because something is written on Wikipedia doesn't mean it's scientific fact lol. The first thing they taught us in college is that using Wikipedia as a source would not be acceptable and that in many cases its full of errors

  • Lemme tell you a story, I'm a Muslim, and I read Quran, there is a story in Quran about a tribe/clan of giants named after their king and leader Aad, these people were very tall and strong and they were very good at building massive structures, they were arrogant and bad, God sent a Prophet to them to show them the right way, they refused and they sought to challenge God and build a heaven for themselves, it took them a very long time to build a massive city with titanic proportions, they called it the city of Iram also known as Iram of the pillars, and before they managed to settle there God whipped them out of existence, l believe that there were giants perhaps a subspecies of humans that lived on this earth.
