Bohemian Rhapsody was almost never released.They kept getting told it was too long at over six minutes,but Freddie fought fiercely in his corner,threatening to break his contract.

Of course "Thriller" would be number one. It's basically it's own short film. Michael spared no expense giving us the thrill of the century.
It scarred me for life. LOL I actually grew up to be a horror movie enthusiast, but I was practically a baby when that came out. And my parents didn't know, "Don't let her watch a Michael Jackson video." He was the most popular entertainer on the planet. (The crotch grabbing was disturbing, but I didn't really understand it anyway.) We watched everything he did. But "Thriller" definitely messed me up for awhile. At least until I saw "The Exorcist" when I was like 10. It's a long story, it was an accident. And even though I was a little kid, I still take responsibility because I was doing something I wasn't supposed to be doing. And I learned my lesson! That created at least a decade's worth of material for my therapist and made "Thriller" look like a comedy video. 🤣
And the end really iconic, wasnt a the girl's dream!!!!
After Michael died the Library of Congress inducted Thriller into the National Film Registry for preservation because of it's cultural significance.

I would have added Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers "Don't Come Around Here No More" paying tribute to Alice in Wonderland. From Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart, as a ‘shrooming, sitar-strumming caterpillar. to Alice being eaten alive as they cut into her like a piece of cake, it truly was one of the coolest and creative video's made during the 80's.
I am really surprised "Smooth Criminal" or "Bad" didn't make it on the list. Iconic music videos.

Agree with those that say Duran Duran should of been on the list. They won the 1st Grammy’s awarded for a music video( short and long version). Plus many of the videos you talked about the concept had already been done on earlier videos of the 80’s and 90’s
"Every Breath You Take" by The Police is a masterpiece. With no sophisticated digital visuals, only black and white filming, great camera and editing work, and a wonderful song in the musical sense, at least, it should be an honorable mention

The "Sledgehammer" music video always played in constant rotation in our house back in the days. The claymation effects really were impressive for the mid 80's.
Apart from Michael Jackson's music videos some of the best music videos of the 80s are Sledgehammer by Peter Gabriel, Take on Me by Ah-Ha, What You Need by INXS and then the combined Need You Tonight/Mediate by INXS, Land of Confusion by Genesis, Money for Nothing by Dire Straits obviously there is more great ones but those came to mind

I was in 6th grade in tiny town in New Mexico. The day after it was aired, ALL of the kids were talking about. They had even hyped a release date, so that created even more dramatic tension. That being said, though, Micheal Jacksons "Billy Jean," was the video that actually defined is persona and look. Thriller was defineatly a "thrill," but I think Billy Jean and the epic street-fight dane of Beat It were is true seminal and definitive music vides. I think there's nothing eally groundbreaking about it other than the length of it. It's like a Broadway show piece, really. The song is great. There are so many other videos that really pushed the envelope visually.
Money For Northing - Dire Straits was iconic and deserved a mention at least same goes for Losing My Religion - REM, Black Hole Sun - Soungarden, Anything by Linkin Park and Radiohead

"Tonight, Tonight" by The Smashing Pumpkins should've been on the list. It's widely considered one of the greatest music videos of all time because of how it recreates the iconic French silent film A Trip To The Moon.

For entire collections of work in music videos, Annie Lennox/Eurythmics, Kate Bush, and Björk would be definite contenders. They not only helped pioneer the music video genre but they proved to be visual (and even gender) chameleons, transforming into different characters and personas with each song.

I totally agree. I feel this list is more base on what Rolling Stone, or the likes of similar magazines, are defining what "Greatest" to them. So many other videos have pushed boundaries that are not well know in America will never get a honorable mention, less be in a top something and be appreciated for the piece of art that hey are.
@@benefit1984 I think this list is very American-centric. We might see a different list if this was made from a British or European perspective. I think Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill" should be included because it was one of the first that combined modern dance with pop music in a music video. Also, notice how there's only one Asian act that made the list. For entire bodies of music videos, I would add David Bowie as a contender.

One that I think I would of love the American people to discover, especially if they knew french, is Mylene Farmer. And her Video Désanchantée was quite something for it's time. First, the length, from a 5 minute song made into a +10 minutes video clip, inspired by Dicken's Oliver Twist, hiring more that 120 children with disabilities to play in. It was one of the most expensive one at the time, I remember reading about it. Unfortunately, there isn't much info about how much it did cost on the Net it seems. But it was a pretty huge production. Video like that should be on a list at least.

They both can compete for the 1st place, but Thriller came first and pretty much revolutionized MTV and the way videos were made, in terms of concept, structure, and production. The massive popularity of Thriller gave record companies the confidence to expand the budget and to invest on more ambitious projects.
It had to be Thriller. The release of that video was an *event* of the scale of a large sports event - like the World Cup & the Olympic opening ceremonies.

Had a debate with a friend years ago about my listening to songs that weren't current. I asked him if he could remember songs from the 70's, 80's and 90's which he could easily. Then asked him to remember a song from 5 or ten years ago. He couldn't recall anything and I said that's why I am still listening to older songs

R.E.M.'s Losing My Religion is the best music video of all time. The cinematography is stunning. It is like being trapped in a Sfumato, Baroque painting. Not to mention, it is about yearning and unrequited love. You hear the loss and longing in Micheal Stipe's voice. It is masterpiece more than 30 years later. My personal favourite is Life of Mars by David Bowie. David Bowie was a genius. He was making artistic videos, 50 years ago when Madonna and Beyonce were embryos. There could not be a Madonna or Beyonce without Bowie. He deserves recognition for starting videos in the first place. Life of Mars was made in 1973. Thriller is a wonderful choreographed video and it was popular but it is not a masterpiece.

Love "Alright". I was at her concert in Worcester, MA the night it debuted on MTV, so they showed it on a screen before the concert. It was fun watching it with 20,000 die hard fans.

As soon as I saw what this topic was on, I said " Take on Me, and Thriller are gonna be somewhere at the top of this list!' There are SO MANY great, and fun videos out there. But I've always had a place in my heart for Take on Me. Im a pre-teen and teenager of the 80's , so I grew up listening and watching it. When Thriller came out , my junior high school actually had a Thriller day, and they played the video for the entire school, it was so much fun. But that's how big it was. Now, Take ona ME meant so much to me, that when my mom passed away 2 years ago, I wasn't going to go to her funeral because I couldn't handle it. I was gonna be a mess. But God had been helping me to cope, and after I decided I wasn't going to the funeral, the idea popped in my head from no where, " Go to the funeral, and just sing the song Take on Me in your head as loud as you possibly can, over and over, untill all the sappy stuff was over. And I did just that , and it got me through her funeral. I didn't shed a single tear! So now, the song has an even stronger meaning to me. ❤

Tom Petty's "Don't Come Around Here No More" was a fantastical, creative and hallucinogenic take on Alice in Wonderland, while Dire Strait's "Money for Nothing," was simply a masterpiece that combined animation with live action. And they were both pretty great songs! Honorable mention to Petty's "Into The Great Wide Open," featuring Johnny Depp and Faye Dunaway.
Number two should have been Bohemian Rhapsody this video by Queen set the stage for MTV.
