Rangers in Isolation: Episode 60. May 18th, 2020.
Ranger Dan witnesses pride warfare as the Kambula pride reassert their dominance over the Marthly pride.
FYI:
Kambula pride = Ntsevu pride.
Gowrie males = Birmingham males.
Marthly pride = Tsalala pride.
For all those who wanted to come to MalaMala but cannot, we'd like to bring MalaMala to you. In the coming weeks we'll endeavour to share with you everything from game drives to field work. Basically, what rangers do when we don't have guests. Enjoy and stay safe.

  • Watching in memory of Tinyo. This was a great example of him. Being a boss. The teamwork between the last two remaining brothers was amazing. Tinyo was a great father, very involved early on. That's why they seem so comfortable going up to him in a tense situation.

  • The fact that Tsalala female had her flank covered by the cliff; is the reason she most likely survived. Update, she made a full recovery and both she and her cup are doing well. I'm glad all ended well. Great filming.

    • @@donniev8181 I know they mentioned that in this video but that rationale does not make any sense especially with this pride's history. Tailless' (Queen Tsalala's aunt and the lioness that raised her) death was attributed to injuries sustained from the same Kambula pride and BB (Tailless' mum), her death was also attributed to Lion relatives, the Mhangeni pride (Kambula pride mothers).

    • If Nhenha hadn't been there, I'm afraid this wouldve had a different outcome. He really did emotionally take charge once he worked out what had happened. Once the Tsalala female hit Nhenha in the nose i was soo afraid we'd be seeing a "Dark Mane Majin" case when the Xim lioness scratched his nose and he further attacked her on her fatal night. Ugh.

  • It’s great to have finally seen the lead up and the whole encounter, thank you @MalaMala Game Reserve. The situation was a powder keg! I guess it’s inevitable that there will be tensions in such a large pride with so many big, badass lionesses, and with the Birmingham/Gowrie boys having divided loyalties. It was so great to see them protecting the brave Tsalala/Marthly lioness. I hope she recovers speedily from her injuries and that she and her cub find safer territory. I’m so glad to have read the following news (from earlier comments) shared by @paulibakker: ❤️🐾😊 _just heard from James from Londolozi' s blog that our precious Tsalala female and cub have been sighted down by the River and appear WELL!!...(sighting was by another source) but Londolozi said they expect to see them shortly...I'm SOooo relieved...let's hope they're right!..._

  • He most fascinating group of prides in the Sabi Sands area. The history between these lionesses is phenomenally interesting. Here the Tsalala/Marthly mother, the last of her Pride (raising a sole daughter) is actually aunt to the Ntsevu/Kanbula females. I’ve been following the reports of these prides going back to 2010. I’m relieved to see that (2013 girl as I call her) has survived this precarious situation. Thanks for the Birgminhmam boy cause I believe he dissipated the situation just in time. What I can’t see here and haven’t heard is where was her subadult? And how was she not targeted. Fascinating indeed.

He was the one who stayed by the lone lionesses side and kept the other females at bay and from further attacking this lone female. If he had not known this lone female i don't believe he would have been as intent on protecting her as he was. We cannot always know what exactly goes on with these lions at night and in secret. So he must be mating her as well, or he wouldn't protect her as he did.

  • I wouldn’t use the term 2 prides, only because the lioness who was attacked is the last remaining tsalala lioness (and her cub). Has anybody seen her since this attack, I haven’t seen any updates or ranger reports that she has been found, I know her cub has been seen, but a 1 year old cub without her mother is defenceless, we need to know updates on the tsalala girl and how she is. They should be making her welfare a top priority, she is the last of a magnificent pride ‘the tsalalas’ and loads of people are worried and concerned for her. If she dies, so will her cub and the legacy of the tsalalas. Knowing how they look after their lions it would t surprise me if they let her die and have no other updates.

    • Φωφη Παπαδοπουλου so many people are worried about her and it’s really frustrating that we know she’s injured and need to know updates. She is a fantastic lioness and her and her cub are the last of the fantastic tsalalas. I’d be out day and night if I was a ranger to see and let people know of this amazing girl, I don’t think they realise the lions in their parks are so widely admired and people care for them.

  • That was an amazing video of lions dynamics. I think the Birbingham males were trying to protect the Tsalala female. One of them, Nhenha, is the father of her daughter. Kambulas were trying to defend territory and cubs. Tsalala stood bravely against them, but wounded. All of us, who follow her story, are worried about her.Where is she now? If there is any news about her and her cub, please let us know. Thank you.

In every video they'll all be chilling and then a little mini skirmish breaks out for five seconds and then they're all back to normal. • Nhena (one of the B Boys) was trying to protect the tsalala female (his mate and father of his cub) from his ‘other’ Pride of mates (and very angry lionesses). If Nhena (and Tinyo backing him up) hadn’t been there she would most certainly have been torn to shreds. I hope she can make it back to her cub and live. She and her cub are the last of her Pride. This seems like a dumb question but it isn’t out of the realm of possibility (the Mangheni male was accepted by a pride not his own) but if the Tsalala cub is now motherless, is there a chance that this very same pride will accept her? I mean, the males (Nhena) would protect her, and if she showed enough submission and humility to the females, is it possible?
