Here in Arizona there are deep natural ravines (called washes) and one must be very careful about this.
I’ve lived in Tucson for 20 years and the only people who get caught by washes are people who voluntarily go into them. So it’s not so much careful as just use your brain.
That's one of the reasons I've wanted to visit Arizona/New Mexico. Would be amazing to see the flash floods through those washes in real life! Although this week, Reed Timmer had some awesome footage of them.

As a bricklayer who works with mud (cement and sand mix) that dirt mud is exactly how the consistency should be,it looks so mixed and nice

@@TheKaizerD not really. Anyone with even a vague level of fitness would still be able to get out of the way even if they were close. I mean, I'd still stand safely away from it but I could've also outran the mud. You'd be surprised how quick you are in a life or death situation when the adrenaline is coursing through your veins. I feel like I should clarify, I'm NOT saying I could outrun the majority of the mud that's going super fast down the channel, just the mud that splashes over onto the road. 😂
I always find it fascinating how some material can flow like a liquid such as rocks/soil but turn back solid once they lose momentum.
Fluid Dynamics is a fascinating subject 💁🏻♂️
You ever made Ooblek? Your head will explode.
It flows like liquid because the dirt is suspended in water when the mud gets deposited on higher ground and the water continues to flow down hill.
Do not narrow the stream and river beds, deepen them, expand them. Wherever people intervene, disaster comes. Deepen, expand, do not make walls

@@Sam-qh1sh it could have been worse if there isn't
Hiken Mikes No labor unions. ? Guilds. Long apprenticeships.
I don't think it was made that long ago because there is a straight vertical seam where the stones do not overlap that suggests this is much newer. Those steps are also a newer design.
As soon as it started I'm like this channel is big enough for a light drizzle
Do you get a warning for that in Switzerland from the local government? Or did someone see it coming from up mountain and alert the lower towns?
Normally, you get a warning. Same with avelanches. Of course there is always a chance it gets undetected, but since it is well known, extra forests get planted in the riskier hills to prevent this from happening. But after a heavy storm or a wildfire, the protective forest could be too weak until the new trees grow.

Thirty minutes with a front-end loader and the road's open again. A few days with an excavator and a couple dump trucks and the channel's cleared out. @@jarvisfamily3837 A bit of extra yard work for the guys in the left-hand house - check how their garden gets eviscerated at around 0:38 and their car gets lifted onto the wall(?) - still, a good hose-down and a check-over at the shop for the car, and it'll be fine (Hopefully).
I got a friend who messed her back up pretty bad in one of those
The Swiss are intensely smart, but it's time for a rethink on these lined streams. They add velocity to the water/sediment by being straight, narrow and smooth. It would be hard to remediate it now, because houses have been built up all around them. But if a catch basin or pond were located ever few hundred yards, it would slow the water, make the sediment recoverable, and smooth out the sudden spikes in flow, which are terrible for wildlife.
Listen to your elders. They lived a long time for a reason.

Hi, I live in the yellow house of the video and we were inside when it happened. No loss of life... for this one at least (unfortunately, another river, just 150m away, in 2019 take the life of 3 people) In the end, the river was enlarge, both deeper and broader with a wall where the mud go out that day. According to some expert, the cliff lost that day everything that was able to fall. Not sure for today situation, but well we got the wall now. For the rest, the whole thing was clean after 3-4 day, the communal council was helpful. No damage to the bridge. For our house, the mud didn't enter the garage (thanks to the iron structure of the wooden gate) but the gate was curved because of the pressure. There was a cat-entrance, but without any fluid, the mud loose his momentum and effectively block the passage with his own weight. The front garden was wiped clean, mailbox MIA, the mud just stop a meter away from the front door and we lost the two car : - The gray one (unseen in this video, behind the Renault Espace) was push and a bit crush against a stone wall. Even if the wall was diformed and not the car, we took no chance and replace it. - The Renault Espace was literally lift and drop in the neighboor garden, 5ish meter away from his front, windowed, entrance. Unable to estimate the damage done by such lifting, it was replace too. You can ask your question, if you want more info.
