The second part of the St Mary's Trophy came down to a straight fight between mighty, lumbering Ford Thunderbird and classic Jaguar Mk1. With stars including Chris Ward, Top Gear's Chris Harris and Dickie Meaden, the battle between little and large was as 'on' as it ever has been.

Small glitches! This was recorded live and there was a glitch through the feed, however we know you're hungry to watch it so we've uploaded as is, they're only small. We will have a proper version to replace it soon.
I was at Goodwood for the weekend and St Marys trophy never disappoints thankyou Goodwood for putting this up in entirety for me to enjoy it all again
Absolutely brilliant, proper racing, no electronic aids just pure skill and feeling everything by the seat of their pants
Got to agree, absolutely riveting stuff. BTCC, look and learn, this is entertainment. Driven for the passion, nit the money. Thats the difference.
Keeping classic cars alive , sometimes people restorer all the life out of a car.
And massive gentleman vegetables.
Much Much Better than Corporate F1 , cheap tickets , great day out , proper racing !!
And far better than NASCAR❗️ 🚗😁
They would have to pay me to watch F1.
I'm from Australia and go to a lot of historic racing in Australia, and yes, it's so much better than F1 or mist other corporate race events. It's on my bucket list to get to Goodwood one day, and if you're ever in Australia, the Phillip Island classic is brilliant
Are you watching F1? This is what motor racing is supposed to look like!
When I was a kid these type of cars seemed old and plain. Now in my forties I find them so beautiful they practically make my eyes water. lol
Jaguar MK1 😍
@@dronespace Yep! Cooler than the Mk II imo. The orange-red one and the green one were sexxxy!
I LOVE these vintage touring car races!!!
Thank you to the owners, drivers, the camera people & the team of people at Goodwood who do so much to put these events on & then upload them so people like me can watch from the other side of the world, just bloody brilliant racing, Rj in Oz
No 35 Australian made Austin Lancer .(Austin Lancer is the answer !)
Love these races. So much more entertaining then modern racing imop.
It's incredible how flat that tbird is through all the corners. Lovely racing!
Front bar is colossal
Actually square birds are built to stay pretty flat due to low clearance. That bird does have larger front and rear sway bars and probably a rear panhard rod. My daily driver is a 59 w/built 390 3speed OD, disk brakes. Would have a J model except none had manual trans. @@billoddiea
@@danontherun5685 Cheers mate.
@@danontherun5685 The 352 did alright, with Hypo Heads from interceptor design, they could go right along. The FE Block went to LeMans and redesigned the Mulsonne Straight by going real fast. They were fun to drive....
All the cars are heavily modified.
That photo brought back memories,of the 1960's at Brands Hatch with the A40's taking on the Mini's and winning great racing
Go Ford!! Well Done!! The End Sprint Was Spectacular!
Alfa Giulietta 1300 cc
E venire a locvià û belin !
Oh, the drama on the last lap. And the Jag's discbrakes glowing orange in the last turn before the chikane 🤩 You don't get anything like this in F1.
Fantastic race I watched it from St Marys/Lavant Chris Ward drove a great race only to lose with a clutch /gearbox failure at the last corner - you won't see better racing anywhere
Sad!
Thank you for solving that mystery! I wondered what happened, as he seemed to just coast out of the chicane. Tough break, for sure :(
What a race! The constant change of places is so thrilling.
Best racing at goodwood this st Mary's race
This is real car racing, love it
Best racing on tv!
Don't you know about the 'Bird? Well everybody knows that the 'Bird is the word! 🦅🦅🦅
Birds are the Word!!!
Racing as it should be; skilled drivers and terrific machinery in classic form. So watchable and tremendously exciting with superlative coverage.
It's like a battleship amongst a bunch of skiffs.
I just love to see cars like those I have owned racing like this.
I can't believe there's a Jowett Javelin racing. This was an epic contest. Pity we never seem to see Mercedes in these races.
That was exciting. There were so many different kinds of cars out there. It made things so much more interesting. I was surprised at the handling of that big T-bird. It wasn’t wallowing all over the place.
I do like a 4 wheel drift better than f1 any day .
Guys who (mostly) pay for their own tires and don't give a ____ about saving them.
I used to auto-cross. The track was full of turns and very few straight. On of the fastest cars, was a stripped down VW bug. It was turning faster times than the Vettes.
Brilliant stuff.
Would love to see the uncut race!
This is the full race with a couple of glitches from a live recording error.
@@GoodwoodRRwhat happened to that SAAB 93? Great videos. Thanks! .
fantastic thanks ...what glitiches never noticed !
Que carrerón!!!
🏁Great footage this year guys! Thanks to all involved. Absolutely stunning event! 🏁🙏🏼💚
Two cars I didn't think I'd ever see on a race track,A vanguard (snigger) or a Morris major (double snigger).
Wow, a SAAB 93!!! What happened with it??? Great show - thanks!
It's a Morris Major Elite, not an Austin.
GT Legends 🙌
These are sedans (saloons). GTs are like E-Type Jags, Ferraris, Aston Martins, etc.
Gutted for the jag at the end I was screaming for it to beat the thunderbird. Excellent driving by ward, shoulda won it
he "deserved" that win....
So exciting, the video was cut short. Needed replays etc!
Sterling antique racing we love it Mates 😜 Hey hey hey from Pittsburgh Pa USA c'mon man you know the thing..... hahaha prime cut video 📸
Love seeing the T- Bird, my favorite body style
Thanks This the Great Video & Channel ! From Finland We Have a Same !
I wish they had post race interviews.
They do at the event
The Jowett Javelin will have broken the alloy crankcase on the boxer engine… well-known design flaw sadly
I'm sure replacements are hard to come by.
Wow! Edge of my seat all the way through. Incredible stuff!
Compared to it's First outings that amazing Thunderbird has very much improved and it is obviously very durable as well. So much power and so big to push around corners and through traffic. Excellent cars and wonderful racing to watch 👍
The cars look beautiful on the start. Is there a rule that they look pristine, I hope all the dents get repaired. Nonetheless, amazing racing!!!!
What happened to the Jag at the end? So close to wining!
In the post race interview it was announced that gearbox broke at the last few seconds before the line.... really bad luck.
@@micb3rd An unfortunate consequence of running from that huge Ford. What a race! Ward is amazing.
Where cam we see post race interviews??
Total drag that other Jag (Mk II?) got wrecked at the end. By the looks of that stray wheel, there were other cars involved as well.
I used to drive that vintage of T-birds frequently, they turned and handled about as well as the Queen Mary. That boat, excuse me, car must have some serious upgrades.
As a race fan and an American it was sad to see the Jag's problem crop up before the finish . Would love to have seen which car and driver made it with both running strong . that's racing
The Jaguar would have won but for a mechanical failure on the last corner.
@@golden.lights.twinkle2329 Typical Brit excuse !!! IF you could build a car that would stand up to some heavy use maybe !!! BUT there is no substitution for cubic inches !!! !
@@wilburfinnigan2142 Typical American comment...🤣
Sad to see Albert Betts Mk1 mangled at the end. Look forward to seeing it repaired and back racing again
Fabulous Racing .
Call me boring if you want but I'm afraid that if I owned one of these classics; I would have to be driving it in a more sedate fashion, and treating it with great care. 🚙🚙🚙
Great race and action, far more interesting than any F1 race.
Glorious
Love it!! All them old cars out not running some powder puff play around but they are getting on it! Awesome.
I'd be interested to know who modifies these cars for racing?
Fantastic racing, it reminds me of my racing days in the early early 1960s. It was great to see an A40 doing well, I was at Brands when Chris Aires took the all-out saloon car record in his Ogentuned one (? the spellings) Long before those Yank tanks came on the scene and upset the apple cart.
Exciting racing right to the finish. What a heartbreaker for Ward.
Great stuff 👍
Now that was entertaining.
Cool content.
I own a '59 tbird...it's a 352, 5.7L mill. The 7L would be the 427, a huge step up, and more than just in cubic inches, and never offered in a tbird. Aren't they required to have basically a stock bore engine?
The Holman Moody Thunderbirds were fitted with 430 MEL motors. This is the Johny Bauchamp Daytona car from 1959.
It's all done for the show! The Mk2 Jaguar with a 3.8 litre engine was available in the 'fifties but is not allowed to compete, whereas the Standard Vanguard 6 was introduced in 1961 and is allowed in, even with a 2.5 litre engine that was never fitted to the Vanguard (and wasn't even built until the late 'sixties). And of course the A35 and A40 were never fitted with 1300cc engines - if they can run with bigger engines, why can't the Alfa Romeo have a 1750 or 2-litre engine?
The 430 Lincoln motor was an option on the 59 Tbird, only in small numbers, and an optional 3 speed manual transmission.
TSC ................back in 59 Ford did to get in Nascar ?????@@thesupacoop4002
I own a 60' Tbird with the J code 430ci.. They were also available in 59 with the 430ci MEL Lincoln engine, they made a few thousand of them although they are quite rare nowdays.. Stock they were rated at 350Hp and 480 ft lbs torque, haven't put mine on the dyno but id say those ratings are fairly close. Has no trouble smoking the tires and it'll lift the front up if you put your foot down at 100mph.. 140mph doesn't phase it at all.. And mine is completely stock, from points ignition to the original Carter carb.. It's a fun car to drive and handles surprisingly well for it's size - only thing that lets it down is the poor old drum brakes, they fade out quickly!
In 1959 and 1960 the Ford Thunderbird had an engine option for the 430 ci Lincoln V8 @ 350hp. One of the fastest stock cars of its era in America. These large iconic Jaguar sedans have been very fast cars for decades.
The thunderbird looks like an American holiday maker has accidental driven onto the track mid race. What a brilliant sight.
Absolutely real racing. Makes Nascar look bland with identical cars driving left for exciteme😊nt.
Great racing 👍👍👍
I still can't grasp the sight of that Thunderbird out there.😀
It’s amazing to see the throwback of the Austin A40 Farina?
Not too over-regulated. Good fun.
Jaaaaaag!
WOW that was Beautiful !! Where is this taking place?
So many memories as a boy, watching my uncle race at Cowbridge. So many great cars. Today's racing is just sterile
Back for more... See! Now 'this' is racing NASCAR (aka Nasty Car) only wishes their races could be this exciting, entertaining and competitive. Cheers from So.Ca.USA 3rd House On the Left.
I don't understand how the A35 keeps up with the Jags? Are these original engines? My A35 in student days wouldn't keep up with a donkey.
Cool
En France on a pas ce type de course et rien que pour ça j' adore les Anglais ...merci
This race is like minnows vs a shark. That T-Bird NASCAR 7 litre car should be grouped with F.I.A. race cars. There's a BMW700 in the same race🤣 🇺🇲🗽✌️🏆👍🏁
Though those minnows have some bite!
This reminds me of how exciting car racing was back in the day and how much fun it was to watch races. Now F1 and NASCAR are totally boring with cookie cutter cars circling the track with no passing, never sideways, drivers in a padded steel cocoon. Hard to believe there are any fans of contemporary auto racing.
Egads! Those cars are to nice to be playing Ruff & Tumble, yes? Well, as long as their still in production I guess it isn't really a issue...
So how does the T-Bird compete? It was never sold with a 427 in 1959. Maybe a 390 ... But most likely a 352. OK, I see that a few were sold with MEL 430's. That's an odd race motor. Tough to build to full race specs. Congrats on this team for building it up to this level 😊
doesnt matter how many times I watch the end, the T bird gets past the Jag.every time ... no justice in rcaing. Amazing stuff.
There is NO substitute for cubic inches !!!!
I’m exhausted
This is way better than NASCAR.
Imagine how fast a 7 llitre Jag would be.
7 litre Jag? Unfortunately the XJR-9 and the Lister Storm probably aren't eligible for this race class. ;)
Proper racing, as it should be. Stuff F1. Such a glorious sound track too.
Brilliant.... nice and close...and a bit hairy too .😮😅😅😅
You cannot replace displacement, just like Ferrari learned at Le Mans
I love to see thesr classics performing, but just recently they seemed like gentleman races. I hate to see these classics get damaged.
Cubic inches!
Go Team Vanguard. I don't think the Jag was hurt but perhaps T. Butterfield's pride was. Bad luck mate.
Butterfield seemed pretty gutted. Did he push Law off track?
@@billbaars4731 No he was too fast into the corner and went off all by himself.
Thanks for that info. I wish they'd shown what happened. @@richard63
@@richard63 I take it you saw the crash then Richard? I was called to the stewards and there was no sign of innocent until proven guilty …
Sorry to hear that.@@thomasbutterfield2243
My A40 never went that fast!
You cut it short!!!
Hard to believe a thunderbird doing laps.
Racing at its best ! Forget Formula 1 !
Real cars, wonder were the electric cars will be of today in 50 years
They’ll be making smoothies after reincarnation as a blender
Recycled to become doormats.
Can you imagine Lewis and the rest of the F1 kids arguing and bickering afterwards 🫣
What happened to the Jag at the end? I was screaming at my phone whilst I watched that last lap!
Lunched the gearbox
@@Indicant oh damn!
Only one complaint... can someone from GR&R please tell the commentators that they do not have to talk constantly. Space should be left for the sound of the machines. Thank You
Agreed…irritating listening to broken English
@@billoddiea Agreed. It was as if they were scrambling to think of the next words to say while talking, giving us some word salad moments.
Yes, they should give a rest, particularly as they're often talking total b*llocks.
@terryjacob8169 ..well said the woman was awful in this .
They are announcing for spectators, gallery and those who are elsewhere on the property and wish to keep track of the action on closed circuit audio. Not for you toob.
These cars were barely safe on GB roads when the were in their prime, so to race them is a high risk. I am amazed they stayed on the track for as long as they did.
They are all heavily modified.
Don't understand why the Ford V8 is racing with the 4 and 6 cyl s Great racing though.
*😃*
Ford Thunderbird 7.5 li, 220 bhp only a tad faster than a Jaguar Mk1 2.4li 112 bhp. Today Toyota GR Yaris 1.6li 260 bhp. Jeremy Clarkson would have something to say about the awful performance of the Thunderbird.
