How much better is a $390 Custom-built gaming PC than the cheapest "Gaming" branded pre-built you can buy on Amazon.com?

  • For anyone interested, the motherboard listed in the video description needs a BIOS update to work with the 3200G. If you are interested in buying those parts, please bear that in mind. If you don't have access to an older Ryzen CPU I would suggest specifically buying a B450 motherboard that comes with a Ryzen 3000 compatible BIOS out of the box.

      @DawidDoesTechStuff@DawidDoesTechStuff4 жыл бұрын
    • @@DawidDoesTechStuff I almost did an SLI build back in my first "custom" PC. "custom" meaning I picked the parts on Cyberpowerpc.com. It was back in early 2011 right when SATA-6 and USB 3.0 hit the scene and they were available on motherboards when I was picking things out, but they were at a more premium price point at the time so I missed out on that for the build, due to my lower budget. I was originally planning to go with a SLI set up of dual NVidia GT 450's. THANKFULLY a friend intervened who knew at least A LITTLE better and advised me to go with a more powerful primary card and a dedicated Physx card at a lower budget price point. So I went with a GTX 560 Ti and an RT 430 (The highest I could afford at that swap out). So I was buckled down a little by no SSD and being on the now previous gen-data transfer rate. But still, it performed ok. I had it up til 2017. It performed great at first, for sure. But over time, the slow down was BRUTAL. I built my own for realsies in 2017 :D Ryzen 1600x, GTX 1070, 16GB 3000 MHZ, ASRock Fatal1ty Gaming K4 Motherboard, 250 GB Western Digital SSD 2.5mm, 1TB Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm HD, 550W Rosewill Glacier PSU, DYI-PC-48PBK or something case, 212 Hyper Evo CPU cooler. It was 1230 dollars after all was said and done. It STILL handles Overwatch on 1440p at Ultra settings at 144 FPS steady with 72c temp and about the same for the CPU. I did manage to upgrade to an EVGA GTX 1080 SC model from a Craigslist deal (got it for 350, then turned around and sold my PNY GTX 1070 Overclocked for 325). So only 1 upgrade, but that 1070 was a freakin beast and I bet it'd be almost as good even with that. :D

I've built several and clients are always impressed with the level of performance they get out of these little guys. Paired with 16GB Ram & an NVMe 250GB SSD.... killer performer for not a whole lot of scratch. Well done sir.

  • I highly agree with your thought process on the "boring route," as that's what I did myself for my Linux gaming rig. I started with the same APU, the Ryzen 3 3200G, 16GB T-Force Vulcan Z RAM, 240GB SATA SSD (Crucial) and no dedicated GPU with a 550W 80+ Bronze PSU, and then I started upgrading. First I got an RX 580, which instantly made the rig triple in performance. Then on Black Friday I got a Ryzen 5 2600X (for 115 dollars), and then on launch day for the 5600 XT I sold my 580 and bought the Sapphire Pulse RX 5600 XT. I'd also added a 120GB NVME SSD, and a 1TB Samsung QVO SATA SSD, so I now have 1.5TB of SSD storage and 1.4TB of HDD storage. So in about 3.5 months, I went from a ~400 dollar no dGPU entry-level build to a 900+ dollar high-end 1080p Ultra/Entry-level 1440p build, with even more upgrade paths for the future when Big Navi and Ryzen 4000 come out.

  • I did build a comparable desktop in April 2019 with a Ryzen 3 2200G, 16 GB DDR4 (3000 MHz), Asrock B450 HDV 4.0 motherboard. I reused a 128 GB SSD, 500 GB and 1 TB HDDs. In November I replaced the sata-SSD by a 512 GB SP nvme-SSD (3400/3000MB/s). In total I spend without transport costs and tariffs $350. I'm not a gamer, my hobbies currently are Virtual Machines, so I have all Windows releases (including NT, except 8) and all Ubuntu LTS releases starting with 4.10 :) The Host OS is Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and it runs from the ZFS filesystem. I love the current performance. Linux VMs boot in ~10 seconds and the Windows 10 VM in ~35 seconds (real boot, no wake-up from hibernation/suspend). I probably will do a mid life upgrade in 2021 or 2022 with a 6- or 8-core Zen 2 or 3 APU :) The black Midi-Tower came with a 600W power-supply for DOP 1500 (US $30) and I bought it locally in Santiago de los Caballeros, since transport costs would at least have doubled the US prices. The power-supply is old fashioned with 24 + 4 pins for the motherboard and 2 SATA and 2 Molex plugs. I don't worry too much about that iTech power-supply, because the PC only needs ~150W and it is protected by a 1200 Watt Avtek Surge Protector :) The case has a lot of space for HDDs, looks really nice, but the metal is a little bit thin. The power on light is a small blue led strip above and right of the power button and it turns red, if the disks are active. I love that small stupid detail :)

    • Personally I'm on the fence about the Matrexx 30. I've found that their stamped panels are sometimes off by a significant margin, and the PCI-E slots are poorly aligned with the motherboards slots. Trying to get an HDMI cable to plug into the top slot requires manually crushing or removing the curved stamped metal piece (only the top slot mind), which leaves it looking ugly and unprofessional. There are many positives of the case though, but alignment is the major issue.

  • Thanks for this video. I built my 13 year old nephew his first computer that would be his and his alone for Christmas in 2019. We pooled our money together (me and my ex-wife his aunt) a PC almost identical to the one you built, we just had more money for storage so I got him a nice Silicon Power 1TB NVME and opted for a 3400G just because why not, we could swing it. He loves Minecraft and Fortnite and I had hoped that my little build would get him that medium to high settings 1080p 60 fps performance and it did :D And then to see today you pitting that same type of build against the type of rip-off bs I warned his mom about :D Seeing it destroy it, even with the impossible graphics card upgrade (that PSU Sucked so bad), it was only then passable. But that hard drive would've sucked. SSD's are major quality of life
