More than half of the local road network in England and Wales could be too poor to use in the next 15 years as the amount needed to fix the backlog of repairs reaches a record high of £16.3 billion.
Actor Nigel Havers joins Susanna and Ed to discuss having to sell his classic cars due to the dangers of driving them on potholed roads.

    • National defence IS a higher priority for national government spending than road maintenance. National government and ONLY national government can undertake that task. By contrast road maintenance can be undertaken by local government, regional government or even private individuals.

  • Half the problem is councils in the first place using poor quality resurfacing techniques like micro asphalt which don't last and break up easily then they blame it on the weather.... If they resurfaced roads properly like the old days they wouldn't break up so easily with a light drizzle of rain. Then there's the poor quality contractors used to fix potholes... we've had a number of potholes fixed in the last month so poorly a week later the repair chunk has broken out of the original pothole leaving chunks of dangerous material waiting to damage vehicles and injure pedestrians and cyclists.

  • Herefordshire is absolutely awful for potholes . It's no good repairing individual holes . They need to repair whole stretches however painful it might be in time and money .

  • Why is it that we pay road tax [sorry, vehicle excise duty] to the Government via the DVLA, yet local councils are responsible for the maintenance of all the roads? Thus it is the payers of Council Tax who pay, no matter whether or not they drive a vehicle! It's all totally unfair and the money goes anywhere but where it should!!

  • If local authorities stopped using contractors and used their own employees then the work would be repaired properly. We had a pothole repaired last week but there were four in a very close area but they left the others still there. The reason given was that the authority pointed to one hole. Contractors only do what they are asked to do whereas if they used their own employees they could repair all at the same time.
