REBUILDING AN ABANDONED LAMBORGHINI MURCIELAGO | PT7

I bought this abandoned Lamborghini Murcielago with a gated manual gearbox from a track experience company for £100,000. The car was taken off the track 7 years ago for an issue with the engine. A mechanic attempted to rebuild it but when he put it back together it wouldn't turn over. As i have stripped apart the v12 engine ive found many surprises and it doesn't just stop there Lamborghini have been using alot of parts from different manufactures to build this car and if i can work them all out its going to save me alot of money!

Losing a parent is difficult at best at worst a nightmire. I have been there My self a couple of years ago, Hope the Best for you and yours.
Mat, I'm a 48 year old married Mom of 2 boys and do not follow anyone even remotely like your channel on KZhead....I came across your videos about 8 months ago & I've been hooked ever since. On the surface, it would seem as if we don't have anything in common, but at the heart of it, your passion, your love for what you do, your kindness and willing to learn is just inspirational. I look forward to your videos and appreciate your hard work and dedication to rebuilding cars. Thank you for bringing so many people joy and for giving back to your community. You are appreciated! Sending you Hannah & Kevin much love from the US. 💕
Hi Matt, I hope you manage to read this among all the thousands of responses. You really need to fill the oil pump with oil to prime it otherwise you could end up with a ruined set of bearings and hence a ruined engine. At the very least you need to turn the engine over with the starter with the plugs out to generate oil pressure. It doesn't need to be in the car to do this but without the pump being primed it's far from ideal. The other thing is, you need to remove the nyloc nuts you've fitted and replace them with plain nuts and new flat washers torqued to the correct spec and use a dab of removable Loctite. If you leave the nylocs on, the heat from the engine will probably melt the nylon and at the very least it will soften it to the point where the nuts will come loose. I know its reworking the build but its not optional.
Would there be anything missing between the housing and the cogs? I wouldn't imaging the surfaces of a moving part and the housing would be mating like he has installed it.
@@DanHomeAtLast It looks to be assembled correctly. The tolerances need to be as close as possible to generate suction. Any gap between the impellers and the side plates will reduce efficiency. The shafts will keep them in place and the oil it's pumping will keep it lubricated.
^ This please read @matarmstrong ^
Did he do this?
Those are the original nuts that Lamborghini uses, they are not typical Nylock type, they are intended to run at high temperature. Whether they should be reused after a rebuild is debatable, I suppose. I agree with your comments about priming the pump with oil though.
I lost my dad 6 months ago to cancer. Very cool to see your dad and you getting to do this together. Brings back memories of when we did. 🤘
Sorry to hear this, be strong ❤️
Sorry to hear this. ❤
Always try and make the most of the small amount of time we have. Never know what’s round the corner! Chin up 👊🏼
right in the feels, I lost my dad in 2021, can't believe it's been over a year, we worked on a lot together and were always close but looking back I wish I'd worked with him more and learnt more from him, lessons for all those who still can! Also lessons to pass onto your dads, I mentioned back in 2020 it'd be nice if he could write down some of the interesting things from his life he didn't talk much about, his childhood, school, things he got up to as a kid, places he remembered (we had a great trip down memory lane using google street view to his father's farther's family business) He finally started in his last week, he wanted to write about all the projects he'd done at the farm I grew up with pictures etc and did a good stint but was so tired, luckily in a way, he called for my help one day as he was struggling with editing the document, I drove round and showed him how and he finished that bit then went to lay down, he passed away within the hour while I was out finishing another project for him 💔
@@trif55 I don’t know too much about other cultures or identities but from my experience as a (fairly) average British man, I don’t tell the people closest to me how much they mean anywhere near often enough. It seems like there’s a stigma that it shows weakness when in reality it’s the complete opposite! There’s not much we can control in this world, but this is something we can change to make our lives better! Regret is a terrible thing, I’m glad you had your chance to have that little moment together before he passed 🙏🏼 ❤️
This is finally starting to come together. Can't wait to hear it run for the first time.
Hey Matt, I'd be happy to have a look at that instrument cluster if you'd like. Can't guarantee anything but I'd give it a try.
That would be awesome!! ill drop you an email!
@@MatArmstrongbmx Perfect!
@@Tronicsfix I follow you both TronixFix and Mat. When I watched this I thought that the perfect job for TronixFix. And I saw this in the comments. Looking forward to see the video and see if you can repair the instrument panel. Best of luck.
@@tomas0ft Thanks! Appreciate that.
@@Tronicsfix i also would love to watch this video if u decide to do one i watch your videos and fixed loads of consoles thanks to yourself
Hey Mat, Two things with those Volvo throttle bodies: 1) the throttle position sensor tends to fail but can be replaced with a more modern hall sensor setup (there are a number of places that do that work, I used XemodeX in Canada to do mine) 2) you will definitely need to reprogram them for the specific Lamborghini engine spec so it matches with the ECU. On even on different Volvos those throttle bodies aren't interchangeable. You might be able to find a shop that can hopefully pull the program off of your original Lamborghini one (if it's not completely dead!) and transfer it to the Volvo ones. Best of luck with the continued rebuild!
yeah u r right, that is exactly what I wanted to add - Magneti Marelli TBs are so much pain in the neck in Volvos, spent hours on swapping them and learning how to code them to the car properly.
+1 be careful with this thing, better to get them rebuilt before install
There are places in the UK that will fit the contactless magnet sensor, but given how easy and cheap it is, why bother? Agree coding may (not necessarily will) be required to the car. With Volvos, you had a 50/50 chance a scrap yard replacement would have the same code.
I love how matt explains exactly what his doing so we understand what's going on
This is my favorite thing about Matt and his pages. He explains what he's doing and doesn't beat around the bush about things.
I love how he is proving how these Italian cars are intricate rip offs. This is coming from an Italian gear head.
Yeah how Lamborghini is all fluffed up fake bullox
I love that Mat has his father there every step of the way. What a fantastic relationship! Best of luck to you and your Murcielago build!
I absolutely
I love the checking the part numbers and finding out they are generic to other cars. It does make you think you are just paying for a name sometimes. Amazing stuff Mat
Wouldn't surprise me if he gets a letter from a Lambo solicitor soon.
Why? Lambo are doing the same thing
always has been
could lambo have made specific modifications to the throttle body and that's why their own part number sticker is on there?
@@DanielMustang47 no chance
I'm only a few minutes into this but when you said rebuilding with your dad it just made me so happy. Great memories to cherish Matt. Congrats on your success it's well earned. Peace
Just goes to show that this still goes on. Many, many moons ago we discovered the starter motor on a certain Rolls Royce was the same as the one as on a Ford Cortina. It was supposed to have been tested to an aviation spec but when we spoke to the manufacturers they said ALL the specs were to that standard even in the Cortina. Price difference in the late 70s was £38 versus £800+ These are expensive prices for labels!!! Keep researching Mat. You're doing a fine job.
Your enthusiasm towards your work is absolutely amazing. I think I've watched every single video you have brought out & never get bored of watching the way you transform these cars. Nearly a million subs now which is amazing. Keep those videos coming. Can't wait to see the 1st turn of the key on this Lambo.
Matt your dad is the real deal what a combo you both make. I can’t wait for the engine to be finished. Keep the videos coming
I can't help but wonder if this was on TV 10 years ago how well it would have done. It's so watchable, and consistently so. We're all looking forward to hearing this fire up and running, Mat! Keep on going 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
Agreed. If topgear go for a new host it needs to be someone like Mat
It should be on tv - period.
Huge congratulations on the 1 million buddy wish you all the best 😁
I’m late to this series but I have to comment how much I love seeing your dad help out. I grew up helping my dad in the garage working on his 1970 Chevelle. Fun memories. And your dad seems to know his way around an engine very well!
This is exactly what I needed this evening!! I'm so excited to see it getting better and better every time!! Keep it up Matt
You’re the only KZheadr for which I press the like button without actually having seen it yet, you just know it’s quality!

I can second you on this!! 💪🏼
Mat, you blow my mind!!!! This is so incredibly interesting and such an unexpectedly ridiculous deep dive into engine rebuilding…but in SUCH a relaxed, calm, almost jovial manner!!!! It’s amazing Mat… what you do is absolutely incredible! You and the crew (Hanna, Chris, Liam, your Dad, Mallory) are so eff’in cool!!!! Please continue to create and offer such brilliant content… thank you so much for what you and your team do! ✌️❤️ x
I’ll say it again, so awesome to see you working on this with your dad! Wish I could do stuff like this with my dad, sadly he lives a few hundred miles away.
The Murcielago engine is slowly coming back to life, & it's good to see your Dad helping out with this part of the rebuild......something to look back in with pride. The 'rebuilt/reconditioned' oil pump is a wonderful effort & a major step forward to getting the engine working once again. Keep up the great work & don't keep us waiting too long for the next episode! 👍
Watching you and your dad puts a smile on my face every episode. Great job Mat !!!!! Can't wait to hear the engine running!!!!🏎
Mat shows how expensive car manufacturers are using generic components found in cheaper car models. Mat is a real deal! Taught me how to save money by rebuilding, accident damage expensive cars.
Love the channel. Love the Merci restoration. But maybe the best is seeing you do it with your Dad. I'm jealous and proud of you and your Dad at the same time. Fathers want nothing more than to share their passions with their sons. Sons want nothing more than to share their passions with their Dads. You are both an inspiration to fathers and sons everywhere!😁😁😁
Mine doesn't... he lives 10 minute away and in the 20 years I have lived in my home, he's been here twice.
@@indetrucks Every family is different. Every father/son relationship is different. Your dad lives 10 minutes away from you. That means you live 10 minutes away from him. Hopefully you have been to see him more often. Forgiveness and compassion start in our own heart. The ones who benefit the most are ourselves. My mother used to say ‘God blesses the peacemakers.’ I am still working on that myself. God bless you and all your family🌞
I was going to say, the way that you sealed the oil pump up with the sealant had gaps in in and may cause a leak but as it’s in the engine anyway it should be ok unless the oil pressure is compromised. The chain cover sealant is the same😢 the sealant should be the other side of the bolt holes to prevent leaks through the holes. I really hope it’s ok. This has been an epic build and can’t wait to see it finished
Absolutely loved watching this series Mat! 👌🏻 Can't wait to see it all done. Nearly at 1 Million Subs!! What a milestone 🔥
This is what tavarish videos were like. It's crazy to think of this channel. Came out of nowhere and has filled that gap for auto content t we have been missing for over two years. All I'm for it!
Such a great build series. So nice to be able to spend that time with your father. Cherish that bro💫
Such a complex peace of engineering that engine, it's scary, amazes me how much research and effort Matt puts into these videos, explains things so well, excellent on screen graphics too. Also love how with a bit of research on part numbers, can save an absolute fortune too... Looking fwd to seeing this one built and working, would love to turn the key on it too, only living down the road in Charnwood is handy to, keep up the great work Matt, love all videos and content 👏👏👍👍
I, as many have said, really enjoy watching your videos and seeing your Dad helping out as well. I grew up around Austin Healey's and old Jag's that my father was helping people fix/rebuild. We always seemed to have an engine sitting on a stand in our garage. He wasn't a mechanic either, he learned because of his passion for cars and bikes. When he passed a few years ago, I had to put his Harley back together (as he hd pulled it apart). I loved every minute of it. There's just something to love about learning by doing. My son is a lot like my father and wants to buy a project car. Maybe I will. All that said, if you need someone to turn that key for the first time, I would love to be there and to shake you and your Dad's hands. Well done Mat.

the amount of joy and smiles you bring is immeasurable - really, thank you.
Been watching this build from the start. Really makes me miss wrenching with my dad. Can always learn so much from them. Embrace it while you got him around! ❤ it’s so crazy how a sticker adds thousands to the price of parts. Keep up the good work.
Mat, with all the shit and negativity going on at the moment in the world, watching these videos, watching your enthusiasm, watching you work with your dad and letting us be a part of this journey with you just radiates your positivity, I wait for these videos like I used to wait for top gear all those years ago, thanks for sharing and keep it up pal, all the best.
Matt, you have saved people so much money by all of your research bud. So fantastic! You are a hero dude, amazing work and such great vlogs.
I’m not a massive lambo fan (post 2000 anyway), but this is genuinely the best rebuild video I’ve seen! The explanation of TDC and also the simplicity of todays world in that you should always ask google just makes me so happy! This is brilliant Mat and co! I’m also starting the Aston vids from the AM inspection one back… such great content! Why does everything have to be recorded and uploaded to the internet? This is why! If this was on Netflix or Amazon etc, I’d happily pay to subscribe. You are great at what you do young man. (I’m normally a Jago Hazzard / Geoff Marshall type of viewer… 🤫)
I really appreciate the fact that he explains it in a way that even people who have never disassembled their TV remote to understand "what and why" in a car engine.
It’s crazy how you figure out how to be so precise in everything. Almost 1 million man. So happy to see you get the growth you deserve

Will there be a UK Dash Cam episode tonight mate?
Makes you wonder how much it would cost to build one from scratch, since most of it isnt even Lamborghini parts. Brilliant video as always, keep um coming
Love how the channel is so successful that none of these cars are in any of ours reach, yet mat makes it feel relatable. That’s entertainment at its best, great host and a phenomenal channel. Honestly can’t wait to see this finished.

This has to one of the best videos yet in my opinion. Well done to you and your Dad for rebuilding that V12. As much as I would want to be the person turning the key for its 1st start - I don't think my nerves would take it!. I dread the worst turning the key on a 1.6 ford focus after a timing belt change let alone something like this 😅. Can't wait to hear this fire in to life 👍.
As always another awesome video. I love the way you find all the parts from other cars and expose the stupid prices charged for same part.
Someone should do a compilation of all occasions of this in all his builds, it would be hilarious.
@@martinhammarlund3975 I totally agree with you and put big car companies to shame.
I'd be looking at some of the ECU's, or check the output to the connector for the dash for voltage. There's been so much work done to it you would at least expect there to be some lights by now. Other than that, its good to see some progress there! Well done!
I am wondering if they have checked the pins on the connector for power? The board may not be the issue and I'd be trying to test a known board at this point.
Bloody incredible work you do Mat! I've thoroughly enjoyed watching you smash out this restoration. I hope you have some luck with the instrument cluster soon. 😘
Great project! I’m watching your videos from NYC🇺🇸 and from the Caribbean, Dominican Republic 🇩🇴

Thrift shop? Dude, he spunked a hundred grand, in readies, for that heap of thrashed-to-death shit. That ain't thrift-shop ventures in anybody's language.
Lambo cig tray lid attached with chewing gum to an Audi part, thrift shop all the way in my books and fair play to him for doing it
Great work. I guess the mystery question is...if the head bolts are on so tight how did the original mechanic get them off??
Fairly certain either they wrote the engine off at the time or was meant to be put back together at a later date and the mechanic loosely put it back together.
Absolutely love it , you and you’re dad have done a amazing job at rebuilding the engine cannot wait to here it fire up 👍👍👍
