The way that Maomao is so oblivious in the way she talks to Jinshi is actually hilarious
Jinshi has still not learned to clear up misunderstandings, even when we get to the point of the "'frog' incident".
I like to think she knows exactly what's she's doing and acts oblivious to mess with him lol
I prefer to think in this specific situation, she has no idea what the problem is, cause the misunderstanding is funnier
I would call it adorable.
Spoiler She has no idea he is attracted to her abd has reason to think that because she doesn't know that he still has his plumping.
Our boy Jinshi has fallen for her brain, hook, line and sinker. I love watching him becoming more desperate with each volume.

And Gyokuyo(the concubine Maomao is serving under) is loving every second of it, I wouldn't be surprised if she was the one who told Maomao to mention a repayment and then vaguely answer any questions just to see what kind of reaction Jinshi had.

If you watch the previous episode her friend from when she was in laundry duty is the one who told her about it. But as we can gather she didn't tell her what specifically it meant, just that someone who gives her a hairpin and is in good enough standing can take her home
It's her daily comedy and/or soap opera and she refuses to miss even a single show!

The chibi figures against these elegant Chinese palace backgrounds kills me every time.
For context: MaoMao thinks that Jinshi is angry she didn't ask him for help getting a 3 day pass to get outside, Jinshi thinks that MaoMao paid off the guy that helped her get outside by having a One Night Stand with him. MaoMao did pay the guy, but with a recommendation and discount pass for an A+ concubine she knew

This entire scene was my favorite part of this episode; Maomao being completely unaware of Jinshi's jealousy and his reactions to Maomao "granting [Lihaku] a night of blissful dreams." The chibi one is priceless (2:38). Binged every episode so far and I can definitely recommend it. Nice visuals and animation, love its traditional Chinese soundtrack and I even found the story to be quite interesting so far.
I wonder if Jinshi's friend explains it to him.

These new wave of Chinese inspired anime are so interesting to watch!
It’s funny because her inside thoughts show that she really doesn’t understand what the problem is and she doesn’t find what she’s saying wrong in any way. She doesn’t get the subtlety in all the gestures and words. She doesn’t try to purposely get him jealous or try to act naive on purpose. She also doesn’t act like those stupid naive protagonists. She seems 100% logical in her wording and thoughts that you basically get brainwashed by her words and think there’s nothing wrong with what she said. It’s too hilarious. I find myself laughing every time.
Just wait until you meet her birth father. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree but she looks like a genius relationship guru next to him. (But he's into war strategy like she's into poison and medicine, so...)

@@michaelwilliamybarra2409 I don't know about her father being autistic, but he is definitively something as he is explicitely shown to be unable to recognise faces and only enjoying the company of like three people in his whole life, and that is including Mao Mao who can't stand him
@@ananas_6029 Her father has prosopagnosia (face blindness). He sees most people around him, especially strangers, as having the blank black or white "faces" of Go stones, while the people he's familiar with appear to him as specific shogi pieces. The only people he's able to recognize as having "human" faces are Maomao and her mother.
Aw you cut out the part afterwards where we're shown that others were listening in on this moment - Gyokuyou was dying from laughter and Maomao gets smacked over the head for the misunderstanding.
Gyokuyo is just there to thrive on the chaos and I love her for it. XD

It looks like we got two reactions from our boy Jinshi: 1) Jealous - Using Maomao "ugh" expression where she took someone more important than him to get her home 2) Shock - Maomao described that the person she took had a good time, but fail to mention it wasn't a romantic relationship P.S This show keeps getting better and better LOL

Wow. At this point he could be wearing a T-shirt with "MAOMAO YOU'RE THE LOVE OF MY LIFE" printed on it, and she'd still find a way to misinterpret it.
Fun fact: Jinshi usually uses 'watashi' to refer to himself (which is more elegant/formal). But in this scene he uses 'ore' (a more masculine and informal pronoun). Maomao realizes this but doesn't pay much attention to it. Maybe Jinshi felt more confident around MaoMao XD

Even if does, at this stage, she doesn’t have any feeling for him yet. And even later in the volumes, it’s a slow process, though she does start to see him in a more favorable light.

What I love about this scene and afterwards is Lady Gyokuyou's laugh. She is truly enjoying the normally smug Jinshi that has her attendants fawning over him getting riled up by a delicious misunderstanding. And her laughter and expressions are so charming.

How many others lost a lung to this part of the episodes. Everyone under Gyokuyo are aware Maomao is blissfully ignorant to the meaning of the hairpins. At least anime wise I don’t think we’ve been told what they are given we are in her perspective. However Jinshi is unaware of this and the misunderstandings are great.

It’s not high pitched alright, but it’s far from “not feminine”. She’s just kinda listless.
I can't believe you actually described her voice as boyish and unfeminine! It is neither of those things. She doesn't have the helium pitched voice that other anime female protagonists have, but that hardly makes her sound less like a girl.

I don’t normally like drama anime, but this show really has me hooked. Can’t wait to see the relationships between all the characters develop.
According to what I "researched" *cough Google cough*, giving a women back then was signaling either profound respect/thanks or if it was a higher authority and giving one to the opposite gender in cases, signaled a interest in that person. Intrigued to see where the show goes with the whole hairpin incident....
in this show, the pin is more of a 'under my protection' kinda pin as we must remember that she got pins from two concubines
