HOW TO Train Your Dog To HEEL! FIRST STEPS!
What's Up Everyone! In this video, I show an UNEDITED Heeling training session with a one year old German Shepherd!
A proper and legitimate HEEL command is one of the most difficult things for the average dog owner to train! There are a lot of MYTHS out there surrounding this behavior and even more silly youtube videos on 'how to stop pulling'. Dog training is NOT about STOPPING, it's about BUILDING! BUILD DON'T STOP!!
This training session is absolutely crucial for any dog and owner to master in any and every environment! This will take a lot of time, practice and failure! There are a lot of 'dog trainers' that 'train' Heel for years and still are not good at it! TAKE YOUR TIME AND EXPECT TO FAIL! Do not focus on the finished product!! Enjoy the journey and all the tiny details along the way!
These kind of training sessions are how you will TRULY BOND WITH YOUR DOG!
If your dog 'is good' with a prong collar on BUT 'pulls like crazy' without the prong, THEY HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO HEEL!!!!

NOW GET OUT THERE AND TRAIN YOUR DOG!!!
Especially liked when you said if you don't have time to spend training then you shouldn't have a dog.
Yes! 🙌🏻
Same. If you can't brush and comb your dog don't get one either. Get a rock
Also, my GSD kibbles are very small, so she gets distracted when they fall on the ground. What food can I use to lure her without a mess
Then dog trainers wouldn't have jobs
@@bubbag8895 No, because there would still be people who have enough time but CAN’T train their dog, or maybe they just want a professional to do it for better results…
I've never read a book so fast! kzhead.infoUgkx1_veP7CApJK_GWy_TczaMciuG64PqJeU Learning about his dogs and experiences was just the icing on the cake - bed this book through and through. We're working with our new pup and Brandon's advise was just what I needed. Wish he'd just come and train for me haha but it's good for us and happy to have this new set of tools to use on our pup.
Good training: 100% Patience: 100% 🐕🦺 Hardware store: 90% 🔧😆
I love the directness "bad trainer, then you SHOULDN'T have a dog" Having a dog isn't just something you do. It's something you have to instill into your everyday. I made the mistake of getting too many dogs, and I was in a bad place. I shouldn' have gotten the dogs. Now I'm prepared and I realized I needed to make the changes. It wasn't their fault the things they did that annoyed me to no end. I wasn't a good trainer spending the necessary time with them. Now I am and they've become so much better. Because I made the necessary changes in my life.
I agree, having a dog / dogs is a lifestyle, you have to change and give them what they need 24/7 to have content dogs and be their calm consistent leader. Also love Andy's directness.
Your training isn’t magic, it real! I appreciate that. I have a brindle feral dog that adopted me, when she was a few months old & I’ve invested a lot of time with her, & no matter how much time I invest in her, she gives back much more than I invest in her. I’ve had her for four years now. I am a lucky guy! 😊
I realized recently that having a treat your dog really likes is super important. I happened upon this recipe and my dogs go CRAZY for it. It makes a ton of treats and is super easy and quick to make. 1 tin sardines in water, add whole can, don’t drain it (I used a can of Atlantic salmon because that’s what I had) 1 package liver (chicken, cow, lamb, whatever, doesn’t matter) or tuna if you wanna do a fish version, I used tuna because I didn’t have liver. 2-3 eggs 2 cups flour 1/4 cup ground flax seed Blend everything together in your blender/food processor until it gets to a thick, gluey consistency. If it’s too runny, add a bit more flour. Too thick, add another egg. Spread onto parchment-lined baking sheets (I used 3) and bake at 350 for 15 minutes. Flip over onto a cutting board and cut into small pieces with a pizza cutter. Divide into plastic bags and keep one in the fridge for use, keep the rest in the freezer until the ones in the fridge run out. Hope this is helpful for someone! 😊
Thanks for sharing
I want to be trained by you. I would heal on the first day!!!
Not sure how long these will last.... One for the dog. One for me.... LOL
Boy am l glad l found this recipe! Thank you.
Thank you for sharing your recipe with us all.
I love his show and thisjust summarizes and lays out all of the basic methods he uses on the show. What i love about this guide kzhead.infoUgkxKkYeOoCV_w2vPX0CSyVWkhew2c4FYk0d is that you don' need to read the whole book cover to cover ... You can skip to the chapter (lesson) you want to read about. The book is arranged almost as a problem-solving guide ... Here is the problem and here is what you need to know/do to correct it. This man knows his stuff ... But more importantly knows how to teach people how they can work with their pups themselves!
Hey hey!! That’s my boy!!! 🚀 After being with Andy, this pup showed me for the first time what a real heel feels like. And now, even downtown around other dogs/people/traffic/distractions, his heel is super solid-and building every day!! Andy thank you for teaching both of us-you are truly THE BEST🙏🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
That’s what I’m talkin about!! 💪🏼

Thank you so much this really help me out I have a puppy that’s four months old and she did great. Her name is Mei Paul she’s American bully and mix with a poodle and poodles are not smart and she’s about on her eight trick she just needs to learn, heal and stand. She is doing awesome.
@@cherinaish9327did you say poodles are not smart? They actually rank as one of the smartest dog breeds of all. Maybe it's the bully, they can be a bit stubborn
YESSSS! I adopted a lab rescue and he is totally out of control. I had to subscribe! I’m not a quitter and I won’t give up on my adult lab. Perseverance!!
Love your energy levels haha
Especially when they're small and have razor teeth like you said it comes with part of training 👍🙏.
Teeth like tiny box cutters. I bought stock in steri-strips and butterfly bandages…😂 seriously, he’s just now 15 weeks and his enthusiasm and lack of clean, concise coordination and my lack of quickness & coordination makes for lots of little razor cuts. I have had him 4 weeks…we are both making progress…
This was such a reasonable and logical way of teaching heel I was using a prong collar and hoping for the best but when my dog saw others dogs he will run and jump and go all over them thank you for helping me see to help my dog up to success 😊
I wish I would've watched this 2 years ago when I got my puppy. great knowledge learned.
You live in a beautiful part of the world. Stunning.
Great video. Well put together. Not sure why, but I feel like going to the hardware store.
Amazing ... I never could figure out the "micro-steps" to teach a dog to heal. Other actions, come, sit, laydown, no problem. Heal not so much. This video is like a light bulb going off on my head. Thanks for this!!!
🙏🏼🙏🏼
My dog is a 3 year old Great Dane. I just received her. Nobody took time with her for training. I sure hope your video helps us!!
I got a German Shepard malinois breed he's 9 months right now already very smart. I tried all of this in the video and he's learning at very quickly. I tried for about 15min and he was already catching on. He's gets really excited and isn't to gentle when it comes to taking the food out of my hand. Maybe cause I was trying with crushed up dog biscuits lol.
I got my families dog to walk right next to me on the leash in 2 sessions with no treats at all, however she was a well trained hunting dog so I was very lucky in that aspect.
Great Job thanks for making it simple.
My GS 5 months I’m starting now with heel and trying this !! Wow thanks
That’s very true being patience calms down mind of state and dog gets it what your are trying to teach !! Absolutely
We have 2 GS, they’re 4 months old. One black, the other blk and tan. Their ears have begun to stand up. Anyway, they already know the “sit” command, the blk one knows how to shake hands, ha. Shepherds learn soo quickly, it’s quite amazing. This looks like a good training tip for healing, I’ll definitely try it.
I like that your exact steps. That's exactly what a dummy like me needs!
RANDOM COMMEMT AGAIN. Today is about 300th rep out of 1000. I do left and right FOCUSED heel at the same time. Started to fade out the lure. Right heel doing amazing, left a little worse than the right but she'll get there (she's six months old btw). The one thing I learned about dog training; The more reps you do, the better they become. Very simple. 💪🏻
💪🏼💪🏼
Question for you, what command do you used for a regular heel
@@truegrizzlesfan2292 Regular I use "LEFT" not the normal "heel".
Great basics...lovely dog.
One ❤ man, you tell it like it is . I was lucky my Malinois was military trained so we have our sh** wired tight but I do intend to get another one, couldn't be without one now , we were kind of thrust together through circumstance and it was the best thing to ever happen to me dog wise. I've always had dogs in my life but shepherd dogs are a different situation entirely, smart and sharp as a razor . I've never felt so safe in all my life. We both sit and watch your channel, me and the boy and we love it !. No messing, uncomplicated, bang on the money. Cheers from 🇬🇧
🙌🏻🙏🏼
Omg!!!! I’ve never trained a dog before just got a 11m old lab and tried this. I’m amazed!!
Nice! Have fun!
My family’s had a 2-3 year old golden(?)doodle rescue for a little over a month and a half now. She wasn’t even potty trained when we got her (though the shelter told us she was - and that she was 5 and healthy, neither of which were true). Now she’s potty trained, and knows “sit” and “down” (both with hand commands and verbal). Currently working on a recall command and heeling. I’ve never trained a dog before, beyond teaching our 10ish year old dog “stay” back when I was 11 or so, so it’s been a bit of a learning curve here 😅 Videos like these are lifesavers, thank you!
Bro you are God damn Michal Jackson of dog training. The best channel so far on dog bonding on youtube🙏🏽
Started luring when I brought my 7 week old Belgian Malinois home. She now will only eat out of my hands. She’s so smart… when I just ( playing) feed out of right hand…. She will go on left and look at me until I use left hand with kibble! Appreciate the simple lesson bc I was trying to say heel but didn’t feel right. To early now, I see.
Awesome! 🙌🏻
@@AndyKrueger thanks for this lesson I needed so bad. I’ve been rushing my girl. She just turned 4 month on 9/3. I will slow down and work on lure heeling. 👍🏻

@@AndyKrueger what German sherpherd is it
I loved your intro!! KZhead trainer holding a sign >> "I will train your dog for free!", shows only the quick fix, it's the "instant fix" philosophy behind these click-bait titles. You're awesome Andy, very few so-called TY "trainers" teach luring as a foundation. A dog can be restarted using luring at any age, many people adopt adult dogs from shelters and these dogs go home with very little training or often improper training. I use a Halti like you use prong collars, Fritz knows he's working when it comes out. Dogs can and do pull while wearing either a Halti or prong, while it's not a hold on for dear life type pulling as with a flat collar, the problem is still there, people use them as a quick fix.
Great point ‘Trainers’ on KZhead make me nauseous 🥴

I had a German shepherd pup long time ago. I joined an obedience training program when he about 9 month old, I did about 8 sessions in the evening but then I was transferred to afternoon shift which meant I can't take for training but i was surprised because what he learnt in 8 session stayed with fir life and I was able to walk him on my left even without a leash, he was an amazing smart dog
I agree. My 15wk old English setter that just comes up to my knee was to excited by the wild outdoors to even think of food. And she is a food driven dog. The other problem though is you have a older dog. My arm can not reach down to her mouth.
It’s important to give puppies ample free time outside so they can engage when it comes time to train 👍🏻
I have a 6 month old part German Shepherd part Border Collie that I have been doing this type training for 2 months now and it WORKS❤. I have Multiple Sclerosis, COOD w/Emphysema and now Stage 3 Chronic Kidney Disease. I watch you "faithfully" and I'm hoping to be able to use him for my service dog. I used to raise and train Rottweilers and was raised with German Shepherds. I just pray I don't fail him, I really need him. Continuing to follow you. Thank you for your time and knowledge💞🐾🐾
I know this was old, but i was wondering how exactly service dogs work? I want to get my pup “registered” but everyone i’ve talked to said registration websites aren’t real registration. Is there paperwork that needs to be done through a PCP? Or if the dog is tasked trained (even non specific, she would mostly be anxiety but i have issues with dissociating while walking and talking, along with a few other things mental and physical) enough for the dog to be considered a service dog?
Definitely going to try this. My dog learns super fast but I cant get him to not pull on leash. Hoping this work as he is very food motivated. Hes learned Place, Sit, Stay, Paw, Sit Pretty, Down and several others but he definitely needs some better leash manners.
Andy, youre the f****** best man!!! I just got a belgian malinois/boxer mix and without your videos i would have been completely lost. Thank you!
fantastic! I''m also loving the greenery at your place - very nice!

Hey Andy thanks for the video I have a 8 month gsd and he pulls after watching you video I will start this tomorrow he loves treats so he should be very willing I'm from the UK by the way.🖐️
A month is a generous amount of time, but accurate for a young dog. My mutt is older, was 6 yrs, when I taught her heel. She got the concept in an afternoon and had it down in a week.

I have a 10 mo. old Goldendoodle who has caused me three visits to ED and Urgent Care. I am determined to keep him-sons are not in agreement. what a great way to train! And what a beautiful pup!
Great tutorial on Heeling!!
Hi ,Andy, I am going to pick up my 4 months old buddy this week . I have had 9 dogs since 1975 , when i was in university. I have the love and passion of keeping at least one dog to be my companion . At one point , I joined a dog training class in the basement of a church, our tutor taught us how to do obedient training in a 2 hour period. I was surprised there are a lot of people who r dog show participants. Their dogs r so beautiful and calm. So I told myself one day I wanted to start a similar free obedient class to benefit all dog lovers . As time goes by , here comes the internet, now there r more professional trainers like yourself devoted to people like me . I have been watching ur enthusiasm towards the training, u went through every little detail , however I love to watch it 3 to 4 times to make sure the new and better ways to successfully train my new mixed Malinois. The father is a 80 lbs German Sheppard and the mother is 60 lbs brindle Malinois, looks pure bred. I heard it is getting popular for a mix of the 2 breeds. However, I gave 120% to any of my 9 dogs , the breed is not very important to me . I watched a lot of videos from different trainers but most of them eventually would like u to contribute to their special videos. I perfectly understand the reasons, but if u have the hearts to demonstrate to other dog lovers the right methods to look after the dogs, would u be a happier person that u wanted to share ur expertise now than later on tell them READ the fine line if u wanted better stuffs ,what he is implying what u watched earlier r rubbish. 😂 I am sorry to split out the new ways of life to make a living , however it is also very important not everyone can afford things in life . With the technologies going extremely fast, we will be pretty soon have bionic doggy, then no headache , and all dog trainers have to go back their original job. 😂 Nevertheless, at the moment we should do things with passion not trying a way to make a few more bucks. U want fast money , sell everything and show up in casio , u might have a few more millions in 1 minute. Andy , I love ur honest videos and ur lovely house 👍. These are the reasons I wanted to challenge myself to take yours and apply to my new dog . I am in Toronto , otherwise I wanted to join ur training classes , it is more practical to learn face to face as u can correct it right away and this is why we have to support u with the training fees . Thank you
OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH ,A REAL DOG TRAINER AT LAST ON KZhead IV BEEN TRYING TO TEACH MY PUPPY BOXER BLUE THE BASICS & JUST GETTING NOWHERE NOW I NO WHAT I HAVE TO DO YOU ARE A LEGEND IM LISTENING ONLY 2 YOU FROM NOW THANK YOU FROM ME & ESPECIALLY MY DOG 🐶🐶

Excellent video 👍🏻
This was great-I guess I am a bad trainer. Trying to get my 2 1/2 year German Shepherd to heel…I’ve been working with her and yes the food works! But, I don’t have all the pocket things like you have. I love working with her-why I haven’t taken her to a trainer. I feel like I can do the basics. She very strong and I’m on 5 foot-she pulls me when she sees another dog, a car, a golf cart, or people walking down the street initially until I get her back to my left side. We don’t have a word yet-and honestly don’t know what word to use! I find myself saying NO a lot and that doesn’t work! I just came across your video with the basic healing training and I loved it. Now that our weather is better, me and Augusta can get out and start working again!
You can buy small pouches to store treats and poopy bags in, it helps a lot! Now I don't even have to give my dog a treat, I just hold my hand in the bag and it works amazing. Also instead of 'no', try using a strong A-A or shht sound and make sure to say them out loud with strong intention.
@@teja3231 good suggestion. I hate saying no all the time.
I love this. Only thing is my dog is a short Puggle and OY my back. She's not hip height and I have a 54 year old back. But it's working! Thanks!
You can train in a rolling chair as well 🙏🏼

THANK U specially the part about the Ecollar. Now I feel Im so clampsy with the treats in my hand and then the leash in my right IM So clumsy!!!!
It actually has nothing to do with clumsiness. These techniques take years to master and requires training many different dogs. It is a learned skill and will not come naturally to anyone 👍🏻
I love your channel bro more tips .
Thank you 🙏🏼
Thank you Andy for the tips . The wife and I was given a dog that wasn't worked with back in 2022 and she has made quite a bit of progress so far within this past year. I'm going to use the information that I got from watching your video on how to train to heel to get this one to get in the car and go for rides with us. I thank you so much.
Your steps make a ton of sense! I rescued a pit mix from a shelter. She's the sweetest and aside from being a little mischievous, very well behaved. Please tell me it isn't too late to succeed with this and other trainings. I can tell that whoever had her was doing some work with her, but she needs so much more.
It's NEVER too late! Mine is 4, knows all but Heel, and I'm doing it!
@@DebbieHQThanks for the inspiration!!
Nice good tip. Very helpful training.
Wow, thanks im gonna try this!
I like it. The problem I have is a very food motivated standard poodle…but once I fade out the food, then he really doesn’t want to do what I want him to do. He’s very stubborn; the plus he loves to play and play games, the minus, he hates basic obedience, zero recall and I mean NONE. He stays, if he feels like it etc. You get the idea. I would love to see you work the heel in stages, when do you start the sits, fade out the lure, when do you know if it’s too soon? All kinds of questions and the two trainers I was working with are too busy to work with me. Thanks for your videos - have learned some useful tips.
Thanks 🙏🏼 No such thing as a stubborn dog! I’d bet some drastic lifestyle changes outside of obedience training would be a game changer 👍🏻
I can relate my 6 month old dobie very food motivated an does well in training but only when food is available
Thank you very much.. That will help with my 5 month old Huxley pups
Absolutely 👍🏻
Nice work True professional
Thank you 🙏🏼
I have a cocker and a springer who are both wry well trained but god awful on the lead I will definitely be trying this!
Great! But how can a dog be really well trained and awful at the same time?? 🤔
I guess I have to not feed my dog by a day or two before doing this so that he has a strong motivation to follow the lure. Correct me if i'm wrong.
Yeah, I learned it's best to combine feeding with training for best results. I took over a 3 year old pittie that had never been outside his backyard. No training whatsoever other than sit with treats. Currently working on leash and potty training. Heel will be the next step. I found "Yes" as a release and "Good" as a continuation command a good start. Along with attention training. Puppies require 24/7 supervision! If you don't physically have eyes on them, or can't, put them in their kennel
Thank you! Such great pointers!!! 🙏

So great! I just started this with my 15 week old Malinois today, but now I clearly see the steps and how to use my hands and body correctly. Thank you! So excited to refine MY movements to get this right on my end and he will follow!!
You made it so easy for me to Train- that was a superb trick
My female German shepherd couldn’t care a less about food but my male walks on my feet more then he walks on his. I haven’t even started to train him on the Heel yet. He is always right on top of me when we go anywhere. So what can I do for her to learn Heel? She’s super smart and use to do everything great. I’d swear she can read my mind. But my wife’s daughter and her 6 year old daughter moved in with us 😤and my female literally learned how to ignore everything from watching her daughter ignorant every one. Any recommendations for the female? I will start the Heel with the male today. 🙏 Thank you.
I dog that is not food motivated is overweight/ overfed. Or they have a severe medical issue. I’d recommend a substantial diet asap 👍🏻
just did this during a 20 minute walk. By the last 5 mins amazing results. Thank you so much!
Thanks very much, makes sense. I have a 17 month old Doberman, he has a good foundation, but he needs this. I currently use a prong collar or he’s untenable. On our walks ½ the time he’s loose leash and the other half he’s pulling. I’m going start with this method today. Thanks again.
