When money or potential sponsors are on the line you take every advantage you get. In the FGC you are never looking for an honest fight. This is why games like MvC2 and Marvel in general is so popular because it's flashy and broken as shit. In a perfect match where everyone is doing the right moves at the right time in the end it's gonna come down to character choice to get advantages and after that it's mental warfare. People flip coins over which SEAT TO SIT IN. Sometimes they prefer a certain side and other times they want to deny an opponents favorite side OR to send a small message that nothing is going to be handed over for free including the chair you sit in. Fighting games and Mind games are connected on a deep level. Can't take smack talk then maybe the fgc isn't for you.
