How to Grow Coconut Tree

In this video I am going over how to grow coconut trees. There are many ways to start a coconut and to plant a coconut tree, I'm going over a few methods for germination. Growing coconut trees / growing coconut palms indoors is a larger and more complex discussion, there will be a different video on how to grow coconut palms indoors or how to grow coconut palm trees as houseplants. Coconuts can be started by simply potting them one half to two thirds into a container full or sand, or a soil & sand blend with equal parts sand as the minimum, but can certainly use more sand than soil also. How to sprout coconuts is pretty simple and can also be done in a bucket with a rock to weigh down the coconut, or in a large bag full of water. Place the bucket or bag somewhere warm and dark for 3 to 5 days and then go ahead and them pot them up. If starting a coconut indoors during the winter, it may be necessary to place the coconut in a large, clear or translucent bag with a damp paper towel and keep that in bright and warm spot until the coconut starts to grow. Seedling heat mats can also be useful, but make sure not to place plastic on them as it may melt. Getting a coconut to sprout is the easy part, though it requires some patience, caring for a coconut palm as a houseplant, that's much more complicated for most people.

  • Hi Jeff, had one of these coconut palms many years ago way back and did not have much luck, bought it from a garden centre already grown a reasonable size. I did how ever manage to grow palms from seed which was great, but they did take over a year to germinate. I lived in a very hot country so they just lived outside and got on with it! Thank you for doing this video, I look forward to the rest, I might get a beloved palm in my house that will look good. Take care and enjoy your garden.🌈🐾🇬🇧💕😁☀️☀️☀️

    • Hey Debra! You're not alone there, coconuts don't do well as houseplants for most people, they have very specific needs, especially once they get to be a few feet tall.

  • 🥥🥥🦜🌴🌴 All hail the coconut! Makes a fine flavor of RUM too! Add it to your Coke and it's like being in Florida! You can drop an aquarium heater in the water bucket method. 🤙 Thanks Jeff

    • Aquarium heater! Great suggestion! I used a pond de-icer once when I was a teenager and melted my bucket. Learned then that it's best to use something with a controllable thermostat. Oops! 😂🤣

  • Hi Jeff. This is off topic but I have a question. I took ginger root from the grocery and potted it in May now looking at it one of the pots has a few sprouts about 2 to 3"tall. I'm in zone 5A/6B and have no bright light inside so inside is not an option. What can I do to keep this alive?

    • Hello! The curcumas commonly sold in the grocery stores prefer a dorman period, so in the fall it should naturally die back on it's own. You can store them somewhere cool, dry and dark and in the spring replant them and they'll start growing again.
