  • Hi. I know this is an old video so I hope you are able to help. Can you say which Stop Lock fits a 2018 Velar better; the pro or pro elite version? Thanks in advance.

    • Ben Turnbull There was a story kicking about when the Escort Cosworth was released This guy had a garage and before taking delivery of the car he installed bollards at front and rear of the garage plus a top notch security system He then apparently used to chain the car to the bollards and dead lock his garage What he didn’t account for was the security system to enter the house, so the thieves broke in there (after seeing how he secured the car) in middle of the night with a weapon and threatened him and made him give up the keys and codes for the garage. And as the story goes the car was never seen again. Weather this is an Urban legend or Myth I can’t say but if memory serves I’m pretty sure I heard it off my step father who was still in the police at the time, but I can’t be sure. I do know that I have discussed this with him and also having friends that are in the motor industry and also alarm immobiliser side of things they’ve told me some pretty horrendous stories of cars being stolen and they all say the same thing. If they want it bad enough then there gonna have it pretty much no matter what we try to do to stop them from taking our pride and joys. I do agree with you though, a locked garage or secure compound like where I store a few of mine is still the best solution 👍

  • My Aunt and Uncle lived in Mexico City and were extremely wealthy. They had an in-home movie theater in the 1950's. And lived in a gated courtyard as so many do in Mexico. Still, they were chauffeured around by their driver in an old beater vehicle. I, too, drive nothing but old beaters, . . which do have their own charms as well as jokes and laughs :-). I keep two of them so that when one needs work, the other is drivable - and very cheap to insure. Since I have street parking, this works for me.

  • Great advice indeed. For me always putting the car away in a locked alarmed garage gives me peace of mind. Having said that I always keep my key in a faraday bag as well. As for a tracker, when I spec'd my new Jaguar XE, I didn't bother with the factory tracker, but instead bought 2 tracker units from ebay. These units take a mobile sim card so i signed up to 2 giffgaff numbers. £10 credit lasts approx 6 months. I fitted the tracker units in different locations on the car and my reasoning behind fitting 2 was to cover myself should 1 unit fail for some reason. There is a mobile phone app and you can track the car at all times as well as it giving a history of every journey and location. You can set up fences as well so if the car moves out of a predefined radius you get an alarm. As an extra twist I stuck labels on them numbering them 2 and 3, so if thieves found them they might assume that there was a number 1 somewhere which they hadn't found, so hopefully would give up!!!

One tip is to only place the key itself in the pouch and not any other keys or keyrings, a mistake I made in the past. I also use the StopLock and am considering a tracker and the Ghost-type security device.

I would go further and say that legislation should be introduced that makes the car manufacturer liable if all the security/entry features are enabled and a car is stolen.

  • The ghost immobiliser reminds me of the 4-digit security code which I always use in my 22 year old BMW E38. It makes sure that the car can't be started without entering it. I had the guys from the garage come to collect the car for service one day and I gave them the key at the door. I went inside the house, showed them where the car was parked and said goodbye to them. Five minutes later I was looking outside the window and noticed that the car was still there. I immediately remembered that the PIN was on so I went outside to them. They told me that they couldn't start the car. I apologised to them profusely for forgetting to disengage the code and I unlocked it. The strange thing is that the car was clearly prompting them for the CODE, but they seemed to have missed that on the display. Us men don't read instructions🤣🤣

    • Let's say you turn off the keyless entry feature. Hypothetically speaking, if the key was cloned (because you didn't use a faraday box/pouch) a d the signal was relayed to the thieves' cloned key set, couldn't they just press the unlock button and drive off? If that's the case, then this has to be used with the Faraday relay signal blocker, right? Great tip, by the way.

      @Poustforushan@Poustforushan12 күн бұрын
  • I've had the unfortunate experience of having 2 Discovery 4s stolen. Neither of them were ever recovered. The first was stolen when parked in a hospital car park. It had no additional security measures. A relay attack seems unlikely as the keys were with me a significant distance from the car. There was also evidence of a window being smashed. The second was parked on my driveway with keyless entry disabled, my keys in a Faraday cage and a steering lock installed (same one featured on this video). There was no evidence left on my driveway of broken glass or of the tyres being dragged. I've no idea how either of them were stolen but it's shown me that if someone wants something then they'll find a way of taking it. It's now 6 months since the last one was stolen and I've not yet replaced it. I really want another one as I love the D4 but it feels like a fools game to buy a third and the insurance costs are getting rediculous for me. It's very frustrating to honestly work very hard day in and day out to then have the fruits of your labour taken off you by a few self-entitled members of society.

  • Enjoyed this video. I'v got a steering lock and iv got my keyless entry disabled. The other thing might be worth considering is some decent dash cams. I'v used thinkware all my life and this time around I went for the u1000 2 channel. A key factor for me was cloud alerts. I have my camera connected go a ivolt battery pack and the battery pack is wired into the car. Giving me about 2 to 3 days of parking recording based on motion or hits on car. The battery pack charges when the car is running and can get full charge within 30 to 40 mins. When parked on the drive the u1000 connects to my home wifi network. When out and about I first tested a 3000mah mifi hotspot. This was pretty crap. So I switched this out for a 13500 mah android device. That's backed by a heavy duty large power bank that has fast charging and pass through charging meaning it will charge itself when the car is running and also charge the device at the same time. Basically the hotspot will run for more then a week in parked mode. Complete over kill but hey. I now get cloud alerts when the car is parked up somewhere and I can connect to the u1000 remotely and view the cameras :) it was a fun creative project for me.

Even if a thief gets in the car there is no room for them to sit and the deterrent is clearly visible from outside the car. I submitted this idea whilst working on the production line of a major vehicle manufacture - too costly, too difficult, not necessary... Also Worth knowing, as I understand it, newer models with the Pivi Pro (new defender for example) no longer have a tracker fitted, the actual operating system is the tracker (E-sim) which is virtually impossible to remove (unless you ripped the whole wiring loom ou,t then the car wouldn’t start anyway) as it’s part of the internal electrics of the car, there is no physical tracker that can be removed.

  • Old metal biscuit tins make good Faraday cages at these frequencies as long as the lid fits well. Or use a metal pan with close-fitting metal lid (not a glass lid or a ceramic pan), which is usually even better as long as the lid edge isn't damaged and fits well. A metal wallmount key box (with hooks inside) works reasonable well if it has a good ioverlapping door seal , but some have badly fitting doors, big holes and tend to get left open (all are bad to block to the signal)

  • Great tips. A very simple faraday cage for your proximity keys is a simple metal box from your Christmas Quality Street or an old tobacco can. You get the idea. Agreed that it can be a bit bulky to carry your keys around in when going to the mall, for that you should probably key something smaller and soft, like what you showed.

Amazing that insurance companies give no credit for having it (I asked at last renewal and they said they knew how good it is, but no) but do for Trackers, which tells me they’re probably getting a kick back from them - much more money to be made from an exorbitant subscription model.

  • May I suggest that there is a point your missing, when your driving you car, if your keyless entry is in a faraday pouch you cant drive your car, so while your driving, your zapper is active all the time, a person surely only has to drive alongside you, to get the signal ?

    @ronflynn5043@ronflynn504315 күн бұрын
  • Just to say this is a good video and I also use a pouch though newer Land Rover's use Ultra Wide Band (UWB) to pick up the distance of the key from the car. Even when using a relay device it should know the signal is not coming from the key being close enough so the car won't open. Have a look but Land Rover are one of the few companies to add this to their keys and have been doing for a few years now. I'd think your Disco should have this. Other makes have taken a different approach and put a motion sensor in the key, if it's not moved for a period of time they turn off the keyless entry signal which also works though there's that small period of time when it's on after you've got home for instance. Mobile Phone car keys that only BMW are using at the moment are even more advanced in that they use a mixture of Bluetooth and UWB. This is part of the Phone Key 3.0 specification. Ultimately I imagine all of these might be able to be broken with enough effort but the real key is making it hard enough that most cannot steal a car.

Driving at night without lights on will soon get attention! Also, when I've had a car with an electric petrol pump I fitted a switch to that as well. Car will only go about twenty feet then stop. I also know of someone who had a bracket with a attachable cover made that could be padlocked over the end of the exhaust pipe. Engine will not start if exhaust is blocked. These would not have stopped my two Volvos that were stolen in the 80's. A lorry with a crane picked them up and were gone never to be seen again in a couple of minutes.

Fortunately, I had an apple Airtag on a set of keys in the glovebox and the police managed to recover it the same night after the theives left it in a quiet carpark. Advise from the police was to use the wheel lock as car thieves don't generally carry the tools required to get them off anymore and will likely move on to the next one. I think i'll deactivate keyless entry and have a tracker fitted when I get it back... and use a crooklock.
