The early 2000s were a VERY interesting time for Spider-Man. After the relative failure of the unusual Spider-Man Unlimited, Marvel began to take a much more straightforward approach developing their next animated series. They tasked Brian Michael Bendis to directly adapt his very successful Ultimate Spider-Man comic run. However, after the unprecedented success of Sam Raimi’s live action Spider-Man film in 2002, they decided to rework the series to become a direct follow up to that continuity. What resulted was Spider-Man: The New Animated series, a very ambitious and very different kind of Spidey series, and while I believe that in a lot of ways, it fails in its conceit to be a follow up to Raimi’s film, when taken on its own merits, there is a TON to love about the series. So join me as I swing through MTVs short lived and wildly different Spider-Man series.

Peter’s characterization is damn near PERFECT in this show. He has the right balance of intellectualism and charisma, as well as a healthy amount of assertiveness that is completely lost in modern Spidey media. NPH absolutely nailed it in my eyes, and he’s who I often “hear” when I read the Lee/Ditko and VERY early Romita years

Been watching it on Disney+ and I gotta say, not at all what I expected. The first death I saw in this show shocked me.
Something I loved about this series is how it's the only one I can remember where Spidey consciously changes his voice in costume when around his loved ones. A small, but pivotal detail in my enjoyment of the series.
I noticed Miles does this in the Spiderverse movies too

Speaking about the voices, for the Latin American Spanish dub the dub actors for Peter, MJ and Harry were the sames ones who dubbed them in the Raimi films. Actually, Tobey's dub actor also voiced Peter in Spectacular, though he didn't reprise his role as Tobey in No Way Home because, well, a lot of things happened
Pretty sure Tom Holland does it in Homecoming too if I'm not mistaken.
The finale was so traumatizing to my 7 year old self, love this show
same
I was around the same age as well, though to be honest Electro's debut episode was the one that scared me as a kid
I was in my 20's and I was still traumatised lol
Same, I never saw the ending of the finale as a kid, so for years I assumed that MJ just up and died in this show.
True. Back when kid shows weren’t afraid of heading for dark areas
And let's not forget the Stan Lee cameo in the final two episodes, where Stan Lee plays not some goofy version of himself, but as a grim old stranger who PUSHES Peter Parker towards vengeance with serious conviction. What also makes this cameo unique is that the Old Man is a lackey or some poor schmuck the Gaines Twins roped into their vengeful scheme of having Spider-Man murder Kraven.
Loved those two Episodes. Amazing and sad ending.
I always wondered if that old man was supposed to be their version of Ezekiel? It's such a bizarre role for Lee and it so weird that a character voiced by him looks nothing like him!
Love a dark themed spider-man. This, jokes all over the place and nothing final ever happens spidey’s loved ones is just boring.
This show was animated by Mainframe Studios, who also made the first ever fully CGI tv show! These guys were always ambitious about cgi animation and I love them for it

They also had the bad habit of ending all their shows with cliffhangers with the full confidence they would get renewed.
I think Max Steel and Transformers had series which were entirely made in CGI... and if I am not mistaken, they were older...
I was so consumed by Spider-Man during this time. Watched every show that came out. I wonder how it holds up.
The writing helped it age better I think (I mean it's pretty aggressively 2000's MTV, but they treated it a lot like an adult show, I definitely feel like NPH is one of the best animated Spidey's next to Keaton).
I begged my mom to get me the 57’ collection lol I tried to watch all of them in a day but it was like over 1,000 hrs lol
It was really nice to hear such a positive take on the show. I've always felt it had a lot of great ideas, and Neil Patrick Harris' portrayal of Peter/Spidey was up there with some of the best imo.
good vids bro
Loved Mary Jane's design in this series. It definitely feels like it's one made in the early 2000s with details like the Choker, the full bare midriff via Crop Tops and low rise pants, as well as some mild eyeliner; though without feeling dated at all and she looks really great all around. A shorter hairstyle also makes her stand out quite a bit compared to her other well known designs. And oftentimes, I've noticed how the rendering / cel shaded style of the show would make her bellybutton disappear and then reappear in a few shots depending on the camera angle and lightning. Mild animation goof right there.
I kinda had a crush on her when I was younger lol
I bet animating long hair on a main character wouldve been too much of a hassle
Agreed this was my favorite portrayal of MJ! 😍😍😍

I just remember some really bad voice acting for some characters in this
MJ's death cut straight through me and is one of the only times Ive cried from a cartoon. Absolutely brutal to mess with your audience like that
Wasn't it a fake-out death? I don't think she died. He was brainwashed or something like that
Mj didn't die
Yeah she didn't die, it was Indy who probably died or went into a coma. Sadly, we'll never know.
Plus the series’ mature tone of allowing villains to kill makes them more serious threats.
@@Tesseract.2012Or even killing The villains off pretty straightforward and unceremoniously
Correction on the first episode: Turbo Jet was actually based off a VERY VERY VERY obscure spiderman villain, Slyde. He only appeared in one comic during Romita's era. He was a scorned inventor who invented a non-stick frying pan spray that worked 100% effectively. His invention was passed off as dumb by the company he worked for so he became a supervillain instead as revenge. He actually has a REALLY unique power. He coated his suit in his non-stick spray, and absolutely nothing could stick to him or grab him, including Spidermans webs. He was also so slippery that he was able to "slide" on the ground at super speeds, faster than spiderman even. Funny enough, Spider-Man was unable to defeat him and he ended up escaping after ruining his former company's reputation. He was never seen or mentioned again. Turbo Jett and him share very similar qualities. Both African American, both wear a white costume, both travel at huge speeds, both can't be webbed up (jets vibrations melt the webs, slyde's suit can't adhere to anything).
@TheGlassesPro yeah reading this comment also made me realize "hey wait a minute the description really fits that villain character in Marvel's Spider-Man (2017, Disney)"

This is easily on my top three Spider-Man shows, standing alongside the 90's animated series and Spectacular.
I feel the exact same way but to be honest these are the only 3 Spiderman shows I actually care enough to remember. I mean I remember Ultimate but it's not a close 4th by any stretch, it's TAS, NTAS and Spectacular in that top 3 and daylight between them and any others. Out of respect for them all, I won't even rank them because they're all damn good Spiderman shows in their own right.
This show absolutely deserved a second season. It's simply amazing, pun intended. The more adult oriented vibe, characters, stories AND to top it off, a masterpiece of a theme song.
Not amazing… Spectacular

The only problems I have with this show were: 1. It was killed too soon 2. It treats Spider-Man's costume weirdly as there are moments where he will change into it at an instant's notice, like it's a part of his powers. Otherwise, I love this adaptation of Spider-Man.
I interpreted the suit transitions as more of a stylistic choice to save time in the episode, rather than a literal thing that happens
@@torak_34It's pretty cool

Aw I love this show, I remember I used to watch it when I was 11. Such a shame it was short-lived. I have so many good memories of it, one of my favorites shows of Spidey without a doubt. Thank you for bringing it back
I watched this show when i was like 4-5 years old. It was long after the show was canceled and i’m pretty sure i had a DVD of the whole show. I was to young to comprehend the nuances, but i absolutely ADORED the art style and aesthetic.

@@yungprexious6837 my dad did the same, I was 5 tho and tbf Electro was the most memorable episode
For being 20 years old this show has aged like fine wine in my opinion I remember watching it as a kid not understanding how violent it truly was it’s honestly such a shame there was only one season and for anyone with Disney plus definitely watch it it’s sold
For years I lived without hope of this ever getting revived, but life as of late has proved that such a thing would be possible. Seeing as minds were blown with revivals of older shows as well as friggin' Tobey in a new Spider-Man Film. Guys, maybe if we keep asking we can get this gem back.
The problem I see is that Spectacular also ended on a cliffhanger and there's probably a lot more fan momentum to see a 3rd season of that, before a 2nd season of this. Also some still consider Spiderman TAS's ending to be somewhat of a cliffhanger and with X-Men TAS being revived, I'd wager there's also more momentum and overall chance for that being given some form of revival than this as well. Overall I think that not enough people that know about this show in comparison to TAS, Spectacular and even Ultimate, I think it's why videos like this are important to at the very least make people remember this existed but hopefully also get new people to check it out so they can see how cool it was and we'll see if that hopefully gets this series a higher profile.
Honestly I wish they could do more with this I liked it a lot because it was different
I watched this series as a kid on Netflix back in like 2016. Seeing Tom Holland as the new Spidey at the time inspired me to catch up on EVERYTHING I could, and this show in particular always caught my eye. Always wondered what would’ve happened if it got to continue, same w Spectacular

I loved this show as a kid because I love ultimate Spider-Man and the style/ the body of Peter makes it look like the ultimate version.
The show was originally going to be an Ultimate Spider-Man show, but due to the success of the Movie, they made it a loose Movie tie-in show.
@@Wol1427 wow you just gave information already in the video 😱
I'm not nearly as into ultimate Spiderman as you but I still loved the show regardless. I think it ultimately ended up somewhere between classic and ultimate and it was the better for it. It was neither but it was both and it was its own thing all at once.
Peter's neck looks too long and his head looks too big/round when he's in the costume. It makes a lot of the epic scenes look goofy imo.
I still sent a lot of things from the original, I thought the idea of it being something based on the film was pretty stupid
I lowkey love this franchise entry for the same reasons you go over early on (The focus on the main trio as young adults, the gorgeous lighting, the cel-shading that makes it look like Killer 7 or something from the PS2 lol). I don't want my Spiderman stories to be grimdark or edgy, but I wouldn't mind if another entry took a stab at this 2000s alt-rock energy TNAS has going on. It's really charming in its own right.
There's nothing wrong with dark and edgy stories and Spider-Man has plenty of them. Also how could you be a fan of 2000s alt-rock and complain about edgy?
I gotta say, I always loved the colors and feel of this show. It was darker and had so much character. The show itself gives me a sort of melancholy feeling, especially knowing how it ended on a cliffhanger with Peter quitting being Spider-Man. Since there wasn’t anymore seasons that is the ending as of right now, Peter just giving up and living a normal life, which no one could blame him for with how the city hated him. Such a unique Spidey show, a huge shame that so many incredible Spider-Man shows never got finished.
I also loved how Peter’s animations while crawling along walls really looked like he was moving like a spider.
Well the follow-up to this show is technically Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2, so you can rest easy knowing that
This is the best Spider-Man animated series that had a dark generational, gap because the story telling and voice acting along with peer support I really wanted this show to be a cult classic despite everyone no giving it a chance. I love watching this series because a spider-man animated series like this could not be made today. I really also wanted a follow up, on the ending series finale and just a return to this universe?

I think I still own this series on DVD. I always enjoyed the small details, like how Spidey is casually swinging upside down while holding a conversation with Talon. Or how they showcased his speed when he’s being shot at and is out crawling the gun fire along the sides of buildings!
This is the Spider-Man I've been feeling like they could use for a short and extremely satisfying cameo in one of the multiversal storylines.
I remember first coming actoss this in my late teens/early adulthood. The fact that Peter was also atthis pount in his life really resonated with me. I loced the darker and sexier themes. Imo SpiderMAN does best when he's allowed to grow and mature with his audience.
The writing is so good and even though its early CG, the cell shading saves it. It was a great show and I wish we got more of it. I liked the more mature take on an animated spidey series, something we probably will never see again outside of video games or the sweet death of Disney
It’s crazy how I haven’t seen this show since I was 8 but you brought up so many memories

I am SO GLAD you decided to do a retrospective on this fever dream of a spiderman show! I remember the sweet intro and saw it on Disney+ last month just to rewatch it all! Makes me miss the fact that spider man shows used to have more freedom to explore new stories mature themes compared to today’s spider man shows which practically HAVE to be kid friendly and related to the MCU somehow

This has always been one of my favorite spiderman serieses, I could never really explain why but it just felt like a huge draw to me. The ending was heart shattering and honestly I wish we could've gotten a different resolution. Head Over Heels, The Electro Storyline, and the Gaines Twins have been rent free in my mind for literal years and I will never not wish we got more of those vibes elsewhere. I've just never really seen anything that's scratched the same itch in a satisfying enough way.

What a nostalgia trip, I watched this when I was about 8 or 9 and completely forgot it existed, seeing the CG character models brought back a wave of memories, I remember nothing but a couple action scenes and Fisk drinking a coffee but what a banger of a TV show

Man looking back at this show, i really feel besides the dark and mature things this show exclusively has that tied me to it as a kid (which fits the whole College Life Vibe) but i think its the characters that really make it shine. I could be wrong but this show may very well be the BEST shown friendship between the Trio and has the best Harry I ever seen
I think this show really shined in its lighting. It disguised some of the iffy CG and brought so much personality to the show
I wish we got more seasons for this show. I loved it and it had the coolest MJ design ever. Plus Neil Patrick Harris nailed his performance.

I remember watching this on T.V. back in the day. I honestly really enjoyed it despite some of the models. I never liked Harry's design. Regardless it was a fun take on Spidey and I enjoyed the mature themes it tackles. Also another fun fact, apparently the regular people were motion captured which I think is valid based on the footage. But Spidey was entirely key frame animated.
