Diana Nelson is a mother and an advocate who has come to encourage the youth and spread the truth about the struggles of period poverty and sanitation to the youth and how she was able to help. Within the talk, Diana Nelson discusses her second-hand experience with period poverty and the many stories that encouraged her to pursue this pathway in life.
More specifically, she comes with the empowering story of her program which has helped many across Eastern Africa fight against period poverty and the many challenges that may come with this battle. As well as her initiative to spread awareness to the many uneducated young women in less developed areas.
The overall goal of her talk was to inspire those in the audience to make a notable change in the world they are working in now. Diana Nelson is the Global Advocacy Director at Days for Girls International where she focuses on developing policy environments that support women, girls, and people who menstruate with the knowledge and products they need to manage their periods, including the establishment of washables standards and comprehensive menstrual health education. A leader in menstrual health coalition building, she serves on the leadership team for the African Coalition for Menstrual Health (ACMHM), on the Advocacy and Policy Task Committee for the Global Menstrual Collective, and represents DfG on several other coalitions. She helped launch the South Africa Menstrual Health and Hygiene Coalition and advocated to the Cambodian government to pilot menstrual health education in their national curriculum.
