It helps to convey, that Tommy sees right through him, into his innermost secrets. In this case, a secret that in this time of Queen Elizabeth's grandfather, I don't recall his name, perhaps George V, the father of the one that abdicated the throne, anyway, a secret that would surely ruin him. God, I love this scene. Idiots might be baited into thinking "oh so they run the homophobic intimidation tactic, nice" when really the whole scene is about one guy instigating another about his past and arguing it's important the public knows more about his private life. So what Tommy does is to reverse the play and bring out some private information about the journalist. He doesn't even directly use it against him, he just brings up the idea of equality between sharing the privacy of one and sharing it of another aswell in return. Both know very well that both of these private matters would not suit well with the public, but one never had to face the issue before. Love it. It's a dickmove to bring up someone's sexual preferences to blackmail him into not investigating your criminal affairs further, sure, but symbolic-wise it's just fantastic and genius writing for the character.

A dick move is a bit of an understatement. He brought up something the journalist was completely innocent of, homosexuality, that has likely caused the journalist a lot of pain. And what's more, Tommy is probably even of the opinion that homosexuality is not a choice, and would probably even vote to tolerate it. Yet he uses it as leverage against him, to cover up the fact that he is, in fact, an immoral gangster. The guy would be an amazing journalist, would he not have that secret which he can do nothing about. It's not symmetric at all.

Yes, in business if someone is challenging you, the best negotiation skill is to make an implication that you will put their life in danger. It’s one of the first things I learned in business school. When my first competitor in business called me on the phone to introduce himself and welcome me to the industry and asked if we could have lunch sometime, I took it as a direct threat. So I told him I knew where his wife worked and where his daughter went to school and hung up. He never called me again.

He frollocks around saying he gives money to Orphaned Children and makes a big stink with the Nuns, pointing out their sins- but that's the whole point to Thomas Shelby, he's a walking talking faux-justification for putrid behaviour. Here's a man who has the balls to ask a sitting MP about real, actual criminal links to the past and he's blackmailing him over his homosexuality. The same person people praise for being so forward-thinking will, in a millisecond, become draconian if it means preserving his public image. Bonified monster.

@@Shamino1 I mean, I’m not sure if you’ve watched the entire show, but Tommy is actually using his position as MP to help the common folk of Britain, and even risks his life and that of his entire family and friends to try and stop a Communist coup that likely would have a very minimal effect on his business, given he was invited to be a part of the coup. Obviously Tommy is a criminal, but I’d argue very few things he does over the course of the show are outright evil for the sake of evil. Almost every conflict shown involves another gang, and as Alfie eloquently puts it, there is no line they cross while in the game, all the major players understand alls fair and they play like it. Sure, Tommy absolutely has a warped moral code, considering he was raised a criminal, and is suffering from severe PTSD, but let’s not act like he’s the devil incarnate. He generally tries to do good by his people and those who work for him, and the common folk at large, to a far greater extent than not only his show’s contemporaries like Alfie, Luca, etc, but also his genre contemporaries, Tony Soprano, Avon Barksdale, Walter White, etc.

Thomas Shelby is closer to Marlo Stanfield than Avon Barksdale, in my opinion. Basically, don't idolize morally corrupt people.

It might seem like the biggest threat Tommy is making is about revealing Levitt's homosexuality. But, right before Tommy mentions the walks in the park alone, he reads off his address AND a note about it's exact positioning relative to a subway station, which would be useful info for someone sent there to kill Levitt as they could get on the subway quickly and be out of sight. But, it seems from the journalist's reaction that he doesn't notice that Tommy just said "I know where you live and can end you anytime I please and I'll get away with it." Perhaps this is because as soon as Tommy stands up and reveals he has information on him, Levitt already knows what's coming and is consumed with fear that what Tommy knows is the one secret he doesn't want anyone to know, so the real threat to his life via the information on his apartment just flies over his head as he is thinking "oh God, please tell me he doesn't know I'm a homosexual."

Should Shelby seek to reveal his sodomy, or predilection for that type of amorous exhibition.
I love how Tommy repeats phrases and lines throughout this scene but the tone he uses changes and becomes darker as he realises he's being blackmailed "are you writing this down?" "I recall receiving your letter" etc.

And that's a profound message in itself. The largest obstacle to change in life is yourself.
Well Tommy isn't wrong, if you gonna pander into other's personal life then don't cry when yours own is brought about.

At that time homosexuality was illegal in England, person had to go hormonal therapy if he was found gay.
damn fella, slow down on the lefty shit, all is fair in love and war.
@@vsuperhuman notably Alain Turing, the inventor if computation, and likely a key factor in the Allied's victory in WW II, was castrated and later took his life.
@@Merthalophor Well he's not exactly innocent of homosexuality when he is homosexual. The morally questionable state of calling him guilty of being homosexual doesn't change the fact it was indeed something both society and the law forbade, making him as a gay man guilty of a crime at the time. Additionally, none of that changes the fact that both parties threatened to bring the other's private issues into the light, which is a nice move to see on the bloodsucking leeches that most newspaper-journalists are.
He gave him 3 warnings...then he hit him with the stick. That slow, but patient loss of respect and care for "Mr. Levit", as "Michael" pushed him too far.

This scene could have never come off as well as it did had it not been for the actor playing the reporter and asking Tommy those questions. He did a brilliant job. The way he hesitated a bit in the beginning when he was trying to explain to Tommy about his readers in America wanting more information about public figures in these modern times as he put it to him getting noticeably nervous when Tommy told him about having done some research on him( looking in back of him to see if anyone could hear their conversation, to adjusting and and moving his collar about) his timing was perfect. sort of. i believe the saying is " Don't throw rocks if you live in a glass house." . however, the journalist left himself open to it. he threw the first stone trying to find dirt on Thomas. Thomas merely caught it and sent it back.
@@alexjames4770 Thomas Shelby has murdered dozens of people and ruined the lives of his entire family.
@@alexjames4770 I've watched the entire show thrice. To save giving you an essay, I'll say this: Tommy Shelby is a villain. He's a horrible villain. He may be a tragic villain, he may be a sympathetic villain, but he's a terrible human being. So was Tony Soprano, so is Walter White, so was Avon Barksdale, and so on, and so forth.
Excellent point, I am surprised that no one else is really talking about it.
Exactly, that is the threat, and it's more of an equalizing threat to reveal the guy's private life in turn (which was also illegal at the time)
