Calculation was to weaken Russia to the point that it collapses politically. Quite the opposite happened: Europe, Nato and Ukraine are at the brink of economic and political collapse whereas Russia has become stronger than before, China and Russia were forced to build an invincible alliance plus most of Africa and Asia are joining them in their fight against western hegemony.

@@stephenhartley2853 The USA and its allies were then totally screwed by the Taliban for 20 years, spending a disproportionate amount of dollars only to be sent home by goat herders armed only with AK47s and a few RPGs. And you forget that at the beginning of the war Ukraine had the largest reserve of Soviet tanks, totally destroyed in the conflict, so much so that Oryx with the new Western tanks interrupted its usual reports from the front out of embarrassment, even when the first evidence of the habit of painting a Z on Ukrainian, ex-Soviet tanks destroyed to pass them off as Russian. Obviously the trick of painting a Z on Western tanks no longer worked. One final mathematical observation: if 700 tanks constitute 0.1% of NATO then in total there are 700 thousand, according to your assessment. Too bad that in 2023 the USA only has about 5500 main battle tanks, while the second most powerful nation in this regard, Turkey, has about 2230. Doing the math, NATO does not even have 10000 main battle tanks, at that figure reaches or exceeds it not by much by adding BMP and other similar means.

The Russians have focused on the hardest part of the front-the Donetsk. Zaporozhye and Lugansk-Kharkov parts of the front are in a kind of state of calm. When the Ukrainians suffer defeat in the most fortified strongholds, their "card tower" will begin to collapse.
They are drawing all Kievan troops available into Donetsk to deplete the other fronts since the Summer offensive will hit from the North to encircle Kharkov and roll up the Lugansk front.

they'd never get the land back. i dont think russia are winning as hard as they claim. winning sure, but its not super decisive by any means.
They can't retreat, because the army would collapse. They can reinforce trenches, do minor counters, and build more trenches behind, but they don't have the logistics to retreat. It's the german situation in 1941 in front of Moscow. If they tried to retreat they would lose all organiazation, discipline, equipment, and the army would never be put back together. Also the Dniepr will be crossed easily, as there are multiple areas to do so, especially through the North(Belarus), so what would be the point of retreating?

Ukraine has been moving troops from other locations in the north and northeast to the southern fronts, seems the Russians are working on a threshold count of depletion in those northern areas to move over the border to take the territories east of the Dneiper River and close off the southern Ukrainian formations.
