A great performance by Patrick Vieira, and on this occasion, he bossed Roy Keane as Arsenal went on to secure the title at Old Trafford in 2002. This is my input on that day, hope you enjoy!

Both teams were playing the same and playing tough with fouls that in todays game would be reds was the norm. Just watch the match from Community Shield from 2003 when both Neville and and Cole got a yellow for fouls in the first 2 minutes. You’ll see how both teams were playing tough. Also watch FA Cup final from 2005 and tell me Lauren didn’t actually do worse vs young Ronaldo. He had like 8 fouls that today would at least be a yellow. Also Vieira could have seen a red from the fouls on Ronaldo. But of course you are only watching what it suits you as Arsenal fan.

I do think that Man Utd's status as most iconic english football team at some points of football history has contributed to them being treated a bit more softly than other teams by some refs. But that has been known to happen to many important and influential clubs. Maybe the best partnership of its generation. Wenger never quite found the equivalent of Scholes (let's be fair there wasn't one), and so it was always magnificent Vieira and a weaker partner vs an almost as good Keane, and a world class Scholes. My only regret of that time is that after the invincibles Real Madrid wanted Vieira and Arsenal turned it down. How amazing would it have been to see Vieira next to Zidane in that Galactico team.

It's just that Keane always had Scholes next to him, who was so versatile that you could afford to have a (comparatively) low-skill wrecking ball next to him. They made a good partnership, but the thing is, Vieira would shine no matter who was next to him, whereas Keane would not have.

Go on about Scholes being the real driving force all you want, but surely you've got to apply the same reasoning to Zidane in the 98 World Cup, plus all the other world class team mates that carried him to victory? Keane played for Ireland FFS so of course he's not going to do as well. Also, other than that 4-2 you mentioned, wasn't there a game where Keane scored twice in a 2-1 victory at Arsenal? Pretty sure he got the better of him that day too, not to mention when United beat Arsenal SIX - 1, and most other occasions TBH. Keane was the beating heart of the treble winners (who lost less games that season than the self titled 'invincibles' did in 03/04 and won 3x the trophies), a team that won three in a row, 7PLs in 9 years and broke records for points and winning with most games to spare - none of which Vieira did. Also - head to head in the PL - it’s Keane 5-3 vieira, and Keane missed one of those seasons through injury. Arsenal fans like to moan about refs, but you got away with murder yourselves - the 'battle of Old Trafford' in 2003 being a prime example. Plus David Ellary did all he could to win you that semi in 99 - but Vieira won it in the end - by passing it to Giggs

    • @@Jugistoteles "I've never heard anyone but the most rabid ManU supporters claim Keane was better than Vieira" Laughable that you call Keane a " (comparatively) low-skill wrecking ball". Such nonsense. Keane was the all around superior football player. Scored more goals and a better passer to boot. Keane was an attacking midfielder in his early days at Forest and was the clear better passer and assist man. He scored 33 goals in 154 games for Forest, over three seasons from the age of 19 to 21, with far less of a skilled cast around him than Vieira had at Arsenal. How many goals did Vieira score? at that age? 10 Goals in 173 games for Arsenal (his first 4 seasons, I even gave Vieira an extra year and season, to make it look closer) Vieira was powerful, stronger and better at defending. Fact remains....Roy Keane scored more goals with his head as well. Keane's goals powered United in the Champions League two years straight....Vieira rarely ever scored in the CL. Vieira scored a whopping 2 goals in 66 European Games for Arsenal. Keane scored 14 goals in 84 European Games for Man Utd. At age 30 Keane had played total games = 472 - 77 goals At age 30 Vieira had played total games = 523 - 43 goals (Keane nearly doubles Vieira in terms of goals per game at this point) Vieira should have been scoring 10 goals a year with his head, from corners and free kicks with his strength, athleticism, power and height. Frankly it's embarrassing that he did not. People love to point to the Vieira/Keane battles....fact is, Vieira was 5 years younger, and did not start to get the edge on Keane till post 2001, when Keane was 29 and had gone through severe knee and hip injuries. Arsenal fans always seem to forget the Keane pre-2000, when trying to assess the Viera-Keane rivalry. " It's just that Keane always had Scholes next to him" Oh, always? Is that so? Scholes did not even finally secure the starting midfield spot next to Keane full time until 1997-1998 and Keane missed half that season as you may recall. Before that, he never started more than 16 games in a season and was shuttled around at striker as well in his first three years. You seem to forget, that Keane played for Forest from 90 to 93.... Keane arrived at United in 1993, displacing Bryan Robson.....he had Paul Ince beside him for the first two years, then Nicky Butt was his primary partner in 95-96 & 96-97. 98-99 was the first year that Keane/Scholes were the full first choice pairing, with both healthy. "Vieira would shine no matter who was next to him, whereas Keane would not have" Really? Keane was shining with Nicky Butt next to him, who provided little in the way of attacking capability. Vieira was in full decline by the beginning of the 2004 season at only 28, and he had Gilberto Silva next to him, who was hardly a poor player. Did Vieira shine at Juve with Emerson next to him? Nope. He was only 29 when he got there. and Inter? He was 30 when he got there....How'd he do with Figo, Cambiasso and Stankovic next to him? He got beaten out for the starting role by Olivier DaCourt, and was never even a full time starter again. How about the 2002 world cup? 26 years old....in his prime....total failure without Zidane next to him. Why did he not stamp his authority on that World Cup? 2006 world cup, still only 30...totally average, even with superstars around him. Average in the group stage at best. Good vs Spain in the 1st round knockout, Decent in the quarters vs Brazil, Average vs Portugal in the Semis, Let Materazzi outfight him for Italy's equalizer in the final, poor, then limped off in the 60th minute into the sunset How about France in general....he had legends next to him....Keane had virtually nothing with Ireland....and yet, Vieira had 101 caps and 6 goals for France, while Keane had 9 goals in 67.....and had to shoulder far more of the attacking load in central midfield than Vieira did with the attacking superstars around him. Get over it....Vieira was a great footballer, powerful, strong, ferocious and a driving force....but simply not as good all around as Keane.

You also make several erroneous claims / questionable interpretations but I won't go into them because this is KZhead comment section and it's Christmas over here. All that's not to say you didn't make some good points there. You wrote *a lot*, by the way! 😁 A part of me hopes you copy-pasted some of that from something you've wrote elsewhere before. But anyway. This is as much as I'll engage over here - thought I'd say that to save further time for you. Why I'm even is responding is to acknowledge the work you put in (I don't usually respond because of kids, busy job etc and there's hardly any time for this). Loads of comments on Vieira's ability to glide in the tackle and not hurt anyone. It is a pleasure to watch and something we haven't seen too often since. He has been in the league not 30 games and has already shown on countless occasions his ability to use them long oaks for legs to come away with the ball, sometimes from behind the man (usually a foul). I haven't seen many players make Casemiro look like a child but he did at Old Trafford this season. Let's face it Everton are absolute dog w*** bar the manager and 3 or 4 players at most. He is a very good player and and is only 21. Once he moves to a club with decent players ahead of him, he will turn into a monster. Happy to sit on this comment and let it mature like a fine red. Possibly going to get hammered for this comment already but to put the cat amongst the pigeons even more. Patrick is in the best all-time premier league squad. He was f****** quality.
