This video shows gameplay with all characters in Sonic Mania Plus for Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox and PC. I played a Zone with each character. The character roster consists of Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Mighty and Ray.

Fun facts: Knuckles has his hyper appearance from S3&K and tails gets his super form from S3&K as well. There are even some references to hyper sonic! Sonic has the after effect and he has the white glow from hyper sonic or it could be a reference to CD.. The text "Hyper" was found from dataminers. And last but not least, in egg reverie when you fly and do the dash, it's a reference to the hyper flash. Welp adios.
The shadows are to indicate super speed, as they appear from any character who hit the speed shoes box.

WHAT? yuri stop talking nonsense, all of it is real. Read the comic for god sake. Even tails has a hyper form where he gets the flickies. It's clearly in the Sonic the comic. So those Hyper knuckles in Sonic 3 and knuckles. They just didn't put in the Super emeralds in the game.
The Sonic comics are a different universe and aren't canon to the main Sonic universe though. Knuckles has a green form in the comics but that never happened in the games and there are a bunch of comic exclusive characters like Scourge the Hedgehog. I read that a S3&K dev stated the super forms for Tails and Knuckles are non-canon and they were only added in to reward players for collecting all of the emeralds.
Yuri on Edge in the classic universe Tails, Knuckles Ray, and Mighty have cannoned Superforms but in the Modern universe it seems to be noncannoned 😐

The disappointing thing about Super Tails is the lack of Attack Flickies, and that Super Knuckles doesn't rattle the screen on contact with surfaces after gliding.

Ray doesn't even change color. He just gets this shiny effect and that's it.

I am SO GLAD that the Super forms have their own dedicated theme in this game. That's one thing Sonic 2 always had over 3&K, and I always hated that 3&K just used the regular Invincibility theme instead. 😩
3&K had a pretty banger super theme that was left out and replaced for the invincibility theme for some reason.

Basically you need a lot of rings to become super sonic characters. Actually the timer of rings and you have to use those rings for seconds of you being super sonic Sobey, so you need wings to be super sonic and have a lot because that’s the best way but it’s the correct way.

The red and black sonic is Mighty the armadillo then the sonic-ish tails is Ray the flying squirrel. Way back the arcade years they were Sonic's companions before Tails and Knuckles, unfortunately they weren't that famous like Tails and Knuckles until they are given their own spotlights in a Sonic game
