Snacks for Dinner aka Apero Hour (not girl dinner) | Home Movies with Alison Roman
When the vegetables are abundant, it's too hot to cook, and the friends are down to hang… it’s Apero Hour. Apero Hour, in the traditional Italian manner is the meal before dinner, but it can also be dinner. Apero Hour is any hour, and it can also last more than an hour. While it can be nearly anything you like, I enjoy representing categories as such: a dip, a nut, an olive, a fish, an cheese and vegetables. In this video we're making The Dip (creamy, spicy, tangy), Slightly Sticky Walnuts, Spiced, Marinated Olives, all set out with an melange of vegetables, delightful anchovies and some hard, salty cheese. To drink, we're skipping the traditional spritz and going for a version of a Paper Plane, one of my favorite whiskey cocktails (I’m using Makers 46) that's got amaro for sweetness, aperol for bitterness (and that COLOR) and lemon for refreshing tartness. It doesn’t disappoint and neither does Apero Hour.
Thank you to Maker’s Mark for sponsoring this week’s episode. We continue to love your whiskey and find endless uses for it, all year long- including in this very exceptional, wildly refreshing Paper Plane (on Ice). To get your own bottle, head to makersmark.com/alisonroman

How early is too early for Apero Hour?
For me anytime, but specifically I'd celebrate this roll into a Thursday, with my friends who are just done with "people from work and traffic sucks" happiness and health at 4pm peeps!
Anytime after getting out of the after after after party at 10 AM is fine by me. 😎
Love 4pm, perfect time to start the evening eating and drinking in the summer. Would you do a video of a tinned fish party/board? Thank you for your consideration ❤
time is a circle, there is no early, there is no late. just make sure you're not vomiting out a car window when the sun is up.
4pm is the perfect time
Geez the beginning was so serious I thought Alison was going to mention some terrible tragedy that happened concerning snacks or a TikTok challenge where a bunch of people died. I was *concerned*
lol something v funny ab a tiktok challenge with snacks where a BUNCH of people die, like how did it even become a trend if everyone keeps dying????
Same! I was all, "Wait...what did I miss? Did something terrible happen?"
Same! 😅
Yeah I thought it was going to be a titanic themed episode or something which seemed pretty unlikely lol.
Considering the level of vituperation she received for cooking a chickpea curry, she probably feels as though she should apologize at the start of every Home Movie
I love that she lives in an apartment like me but still can throw such an elegant snack or dinner party. She gives me some great ideas and I love this.
I have made this dip a few times for friends and family. It is ABSOLUTELY delicious with grilled asparagus (my least favourite veg but love it with this, crisp tender btw with a drizzle of oil, s&p and a squeeze of lemon juice, don't over cook and leave at room temp after grilling), raw veg, some crisped up tortilla chips (oven bakes with smoky paprika on top). A deceptively simple yet complex dish.
Alison's a real one. Always happy to see a new upload.
alison i love the “this isn’t from tik tok” disclaimer 😭
This episode made me laugh out loud several times and was so fun to watch! Def a new fave!
"this aint no tiktok shit". lmao
That dip! Gorgeous summertime spread Alison.
I rarely see a cooking video that has multiple dishes and I want to make it all. I want to make it all! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Absolutely fabulous and I love dishes and glasses. They are my treasures. ❤
Snacks and hanging is the best, even if it's just one person. Can't wait to make The Dip soon, looks delish.
The dip is my favorite Roman recipe and now watching you make it, I will make it just a bit better, and I’m excited!!
Absolutely love this!
Looks fab! Thanks Alison!
Alison giving real life advice through the guise of an olive with a pit. Love it haha
Beautiful 'found' bowls and forgotten art glass make the experience all the more special. There are so many unique treasures waiting to be coveted and put to use again. Glass is too versatile to hide in a cupboard or sit in a corner. Nice choices, Alison : )
Yes to the olive pits! They're a must have!
Surprisingly this is my jam for: 1.pre-holiday meals 2. Funerals 3. Any occasion where I can bring it without cooking. I love this! Smooches! 😽😻😸😺
Love Aperitvo/Apericena (so you skip dinner) in Italy. Thanks for your videos, recipes and my Italian friends in Milano love them too. As always thanks for the inspiration.
The Adam Driver bit really got me.
Food looks great as always but I'm really living for the comedy gold of this ep. Olive reunion! Irregular hunk! Love it all
Was finishing a v. apero dinner for one of negroni, peaches/mozz & shrimp cocktail (the only dignified way to consumer ketchup) when I cracked open this episode of Home Movies, and friends--our summers are in SYNC.
Love, love, love the disclaimer at the beginning of this video!!! Thank you for modeling a healthy relationship with food!
you get it
You explained every step quite nicely
The heaps of sass in this episode are giving me so much life
snacks are my favorite way to eat at the end of the day, especially in summer. Cheese, tomatoes and crackers and good olive oil. Glass of wine for sure.
Love it all must try but MISSED the bread, think your so good and Love to watch you ❤
Delish and fun as always. This is most definitely girl dinner
Yum! I save all my cilantro stems in the freezer. I cook a lot with it.
I am also addicted to bowls! I just love them! I have so many random bowls it's insane. My mother said that there's something very nurturing about bowls...it means you are serving a bounty to your family and friends, with care and love. Love that reference. Also, labneh is one of my faves and so easy to make! Strain some full fat Greek yogurt for a few hours (or overnight) through cheesecloth, add some fresh lemon juice, salt, and mix well. Drizzle a little good olive oil on top, and sprinkle some Za'atar. Delish!
This was the greatest summer vid! I love anchovies and veg and definitely adult cold drinks. Thank you for the amazing tangy, tart, spicy and colorful content🍹🌶🎉
😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
Your bowl obsession is "a collection". Perfectly fine.
The little McLaren at 9:01 warmed and fuzzied my fangirl heart.
Great Apero hour. It is really fun to put interesting foods together and enjoy with friends. The mix of foods is a great conversation starter and never fails to disappoint. 😊
Maybe never fails to satisfy I believe, sure doesn't disappoint me.
"One day I'll have a real conversation pit" BRO! I'm obsessed with conversation pits and my parents laugh at me because I'm currently house hunting and get excited anytime I see a house with one (even if it doesn't tick any of my other boxes) haha.
That gravy is the taste enhancer
Desperately need a recipe for those tahini-maple walnuts! My husband is having a complete meltdown over the idea! Lol😂
In the newsletter! And also in my book, Nothing Fancy
@@alisoneroman Thank you! I haven’t received the newsletter yet but will check spam again. I will bust open my copy of the book! 💗
That looks so good!
Love your videos!!
Never felt so old. Had to google " girl dinner tik tok bad?" 😂 You can create your own labeneh by just straining full fat yogurt overnight thru the cheese cloth and strainer in the frig overnight. Use the liquid you strained to marinated chicken. Also zatar goes great woth this too.
This is legit my actual life from May to November (I love the cold) - Also that dress and that dill paint backsplash tile... ICONIC HUN
That dress = WANT! (Alison generously giving fashion tips on the sly 💅.)
Girl Dinner started so cute and then got so ED-adjacent. Like wym your dinner was plain popcorn and a tangerine?? A lot of this looks divine though!
The olives look great
From now on Apero Hour, and not Girl’s Dinner! Totally here for that.
Need many more such healthy recipe
In Germany it's called Abendbrot, minus the cocktail but occasionally plus a beer ;)
Such a good video💫 Good banter
This is a must try
This has to be a flawless recipe
AFTER TEACHING COLOR GUARD FOR 12 HOURS I AM SO STOKED FOR THIS. I LOVE YOU ALISON
that is a really long class
@@davidcho0828 It’s band camp season!
Hi Alison, I have the same obession with flee market bowls and plates,so understandable! Also, for sake of no waste, why not consider using also the skin of the lemon when you using the juice it has so much aroma and taste. Thanks for your movies, they are great!
I love the coriander stems and also use the root in cooking. You Much try it! And the cold food / hot food thing is true unless it’s pizza
I cackled at “Jesus Christ cheese and rice!” 🤣🤣
This concept reminds me of merienda 😊
Was legit scared for the first minute.... then girl dinner
Love this
God, this looks so good! I am going to make this drink as soon as Iget home because YES to cocktail hour on a Tuesday!
it was really good, v refreshing
I'll come to Brooklyn anytime. Thanks.
You had me at Paper Plane 💫
How fancy can Alison get? Genuinely want to see that. With trying but making it look effortless. Because we all know Alison does try to do her recipes as nothing fancy but simple, elegant, pure ingredients. However I’d love to see the opposite of that: fancy with effort but still semelees and with Alison’s trademarks. Or take us with you to your favorite restaurants. 🙀🙀🙀 like an Anthony Bordain moment walking more in the streets and having drinks just as transparent as possible.
Alison is already doing Alison at her best! She’s not Anthony Bourdain. What you see is what you get- - that’s real Alison.
love when the measurements are slight suggestions. i did lol @ "2 tsp of fennel and 1 tsp of paprika" while alison dumps mountains of seasonings on the olives
She measures with her heart, not the spoon lol
😂😂😂
Have you discussed the varieties/ brands of tinned fish you’d recommend purchasing for snacking? If yes, can you provide the link? If no, an idea for a future newsletter! Thank you from one tinned fish lover to another :)
Maker’s Mark!! I knew there was a reason I was drawn to you!!!
I loved you on The Cook Up with Adam Liaw in Australia 🎉🎉🎉
I think I am a bit of a fan girl 😂
Love love love-not to be “that” commenter, but that “teaspoon” of paprika and fennel was hilarious
literally scrolled down to check the post date during the intro because i was so convinced this was an april 2020 post i'd missed 😂
SAME
Same lol
I'm not on TikTok either and Apero Hour sounds a helluva a lot better than "girl dinners." Absolutely love your content and your new cookbook. Cheers!
I don't HAVE to share my snacks with boys though right? 😅
I just adore you, Alison. Moved to Finland from Brooklyn in 2021 and spreading your cause out here!! 🎉
how did you do it please teach me
@@bridgetkaufman1 gotta be honest: Finnish people are just as shitty if not more rude than Americans. And we have a racist government right now. But some people, including my partner, are lovely.
I bet this would taste amazing
Best way to guarantee that ruby oil color is to use gochugaru. It has a very similar level of heat.
😂 that was a hilarious intro…we really need to calm down…there is nothing wrong with girls dinner 😊
15:09 "Who do we appreciate" 😆😆😆
Your advisory beforehand reminded me of one those COVID ones about how this video was filmed in advanced
These unprecedented times
I did not have "Ray Romano shirtless" on my Home Movies bingo card this week
Pecorino would be great too!
omg the adam driver bit, i die
I made the charred scallion labneh dip and it is soooo good.
The disclaimer gives me your nyt video during cov1d era i was like 'wait WHAT, WHAT HAPPENED, did i miss something?' 😂
“Olive you!” ❤ 9:25
I think the Italian aperitivo is a bit simpler but we eat exactly the same fab 7 for l’apéro 😊 (with white wine or rosé)
I doubt if any of those girl dinners can compare to this. Not in a million years. Thanks for also sharing your love of thrift bowls. It’s a thing. ❤️
Pitted olives are like de-shelled pistachios! It takes all the fun out of it.
Buy all your herbs and spices from the bulk section of health food stores. Then you'll have fresh red pepper flakes because you can buy in small amounts. Also way cheaper than bottled herbs and spices. Save your supermarket spice jars and use them for containers.
Absolutely love the "disclaimer with chewing gum". It'll keep me happy for weeks. Apropos of the Apero, ever since I was a little kid, my idea of a fun meal is just a whole bunch of horses doovers. But since they usually require an oven and it's triple-digit temps until October, how's about gazpacho and any other cold soups for a future episode or two? It's rotten and uncomfortable to think about hot food out here in the Valley...
the gum was a real choice
@@davidcho0828 And it worked for me.
@@terenzo50 hey, same, it made it into the video!
@ terenzo50 I'm with you - shut off the oven in May and don't use it again until late October. This is what I call a "grazing" dinner. Alison's is casual perfection. I sm not that orgsnized - I usually go overboard on prepping vegetables and then make a mountain of hummus. This also works well for Thanksgiving - set it up outside the kitchen around noon so nobody starves while you're making dinner and those cooking can pop in and out of the room for sustenance. It's essentially a five hour cocktail party before dinner.
@@willjay916 A five-hour cocktail party sounds delightful. The forecast here is triple-digits every day for the next week, so I will be inside for those five lovely hours worshipping at the altar of the A/C gods.
I also love cilantro.
Same
Omg the Peanut gallery lol
A perfect one for a lazy dinner
It has so many nutritive properties
Omg the beginning scared me lol
I dropped my dinner all over the floor and this video really helped me not completely breakdown and crumble 🤡
The opening was very weird - who cares what's on Tiktok 🤣This seemed like a grumpy episode :( and I usually love watching them.
I am going to be a regular viewer from now on
I think the disclaimer was likely added so 1) as not to confuse with the trend, but 2) to not be associated with the dialogue about the trend. Which when you look further into the context the idea of “girl dinner” feeds into the societal expectations of single women vs married ones.
Alison should absolutely talk more like she’s in a 1940s hard-boiled thriller.
Alison, I missed the brand of amaro you are using. I have used Nonino in the past and have a bottle of Averna, will that work? I know they can vary wildly... thanks in advance.
Not me having war flashbacks with the intro to the NYT Passover video at the start of covid
On the stove, in an apartment, in Brooklyn 😂😂😂😂😂
You’re so funny; “ a little fennel seed and a little paprika “ and then you add lots.
Me snacking on the 3 castelvetrano olives at the bottom of my martini right now
