  • It might be one of the more overlooked 'difficult' aspects of Dutch by native speakers, those little words that are used to change the 'mood' of what is being said ever so slightly. To those who say that it's really not that bad in Dutch, I'd reply 'Ik zou daar *toch nog maar wel eens even* goed over nadenken, *hoor* ! As far as I can tell, _each_ one of the bolded words ('toch', 'nog', 'maar', 'wel', 'eens', 'even', and 'hoor') changes the mood of the sentence subtly, can be added or omitted from the sentence independently of the others without changing the meaning of the sentence in more than a minor way. And even though they of course all have an established base meaning, it can be quite a challenge to find out what exactly each of those words _does_ in the context of that sentence. Then again, I'm no specialist in language, perhaps a professional linguist could pinpoint those a lot more than I can. Also, I don't present this example to discourage any learners, just to amuse and show how absurd it can get. It is, of course, a somewhat constructed example. Yet I have to admit sentences like these really _do_ leave my mouth in the heat of any discussion, without a second thought, but I suppose that's one of the perks of being a native speaker ...

  • It's so interesting to realize the common origin and different connotations of "our" common Germanic offspring. Your explanations about the use of "wel" cover up the English "well" as a starter and at the same time the German "wohl" as a filler. "Toch" is also very similar to "doch". I haven't even realized that "wohl" in German and "well" in English have a common root as you use both in different contexts. The context of the English "well" can be as well "hoor" which as a " Ja hoor" would be in German " Jawohl" which is completely outdated for being very much related to former ( mostly Prussian ) military discipline. Due to recent German history it makes sense to throw IT out. But it's interesting : "Ja hoor" = "Jawohl" - today " Ja in der Tat".

Misschien hebben ze geen zuiver accent, of spreken ze woorden die ik nog niet ken of spreken ze sneller dan jij, lerares. Heel erg bedankt voor je video's!

  • It's the same in German with "doch", "noch", and "mal" (and some more, really, but this reminded me of those three). By "the same", I mean that native speakers use those words without thinking about it in many different ways, but it's very hard to learn for a non-native speaker how/when you can/can't use them. Every time she says grocery shopping (boodschoppen), I always think it's "boat shopping". :D

  • Kim, can you make a video about the use of the little Dutch word 'hoor' which comes at the end of a sentence? I think it means that you either agree or disagree with something but I am not sure. John (73) in Suffolk, UK.

    @johnwoodgate5853@johnwoodgate58532 жыл бұрын
    • I was thinking the same thing. We Dutch people don't even realise how often we use the word 'hoor'. Kim should really do a video on it. My own explanation would be that it's used to put emphasis or reassurance on your statement. "Ben je er op tijd?" ("Will you be there on time?"). "Ja hoor" ("Yes I will"). The 'hoor' in this sentence adds an implied "don't worry". "Heb jij het laatste koekje gegeten?" ("Did you eat the last biscuit?"). "Nee hoor" ("No, I didn't"). In this case, the 'hoor' implies something like "honestly" or maybe even that you are a bit offended (how can you accuse me of something like that?). The Dutch word "horen" means "to hear" and I suppose you could try to translate "hoor' in these sentences with 'you hear?". Although in English that might sound aggressive while the Dutch isn't. Or not necessarily, because the intonation matters a LOT with "hoor". It can sound sweet & reassuring, but also sarcastic or even a bit angry, depending on the way you say it.

  • You might argue that using toch as claimed to be a confirmation is more like a form of persuasive, dominant, invasive communication. Like stating something about another person as if to say, you can not do anything else than agree with my personal judgement about you. Usually, sentences are then complimented with absolute words like nooit (never) and altijd (always). Of course in that case tonality is the most important thing.

  • Dankjewel Kim! Indeed one of my biggest struggles in Dutch! PS: Not sure if someone already mentioned, when I watch your videos I normally activate subtitles to understand the Dutch part, but then they are displayed above the texts in Dutch you put manually... So I end up having to ignore the Dutch text or watching the video again without subtitles (hoping to have memorized all the translations 😅). So maybe you could place the Dutch texts at the top part of the video?

    @ItsMeMarieClaire@ItsMeMarieClaire3 жыл бұрын
    • Hoi Maria, thank you for the feedback. I will think about another way to make it better. Above in the video isn’t really so nice, but maybe I can place it a bit higher. When I watch my videos in my laptop the subtitles are below my text, so I have to see how high to place them ;) can I ask you if you watch my videos on your phone or laptop? groetjes!

      @learndutchwithkim@learndutchwithkim3 жыл бұрын
    • Ik ben het met Maria eens, als de NL ondertiteling ingeschakeld is, is het geen groot probleem. Maar als je bijvoorbeeld de AR ondertiteling inschakelt, verbergt de AR tekst de voorbeelden die al op het scherm staan. Je kunt dus beter de voorbeelden ietsje hoger, rechts- of linksboven schrijven . Ik gebruik mijn telefoon om naar je video's te kijken. Je acteurkunsten zijn trouwens uitstekend 👌.

  • Hoi Kim, very interested in this video. You mentioned "Jawel" in the negation against the negative statement, can we subtitute with "Toch wel"? Btw, "Jawel" sounds like "Jawohl" in German, that may be the same meaning. Thanks

    @antonsuprajogi6666@antonsuprajogi66663 жыл бұрын
    • Yes that might be the same meaning! And in this context you cannot really answer with “toch wel”. It sounds a bit unnatural:)
