  • We lost our dog to bloat four days ago. We had never heard of this and had no idea what was happening to her. When we realized this was bad we took her to an emergency vet clinic. Had we know before hand and recognized the symptoms maybe she'd still be with us. It happened so fast. I want others to he aware and know the signs when they see them.

    • I am so very sorry to hear that you lost your precious pup. You are not alone, it can happen to any person and their pup if they're unfamiliar with the problem, which is why I made the video. It can happen to a dog who's five months or 12 yrs and anything in between. Thank you for your comment and feel free to share the video with other dog owners.

    • My apologies for a late reply; a serious family situation arose suddenly involving a critical injury. This is not bloat but could be gas or something else. If it was bloat, your pup would have died within hours. Very glad you are taking him to the vet.

  • Yes bloat comes on fast my friends GSD got it thank goodness she was able to get her to an emergency vet on time....I have a Whippet feed her 2 times a day and NEVER before she goes out for a run no matter how hungry she may be she gets fed after her run time which she does in the morning. Thank you for the video and your insight, it's all true and something to be mindful of.

    • Thank you for your comment. There are so many people who don't recognize bloat until it's too late. I just had a lady on my "X" feed with a Beauceron who rushed it to the vet and made it in time. She was one of the lucky ones.

  • Have had GSD'S for 50years and our 4th died of bloat in January, a friends had died some years ago from it, so was prepared, but suddenly about 7pm she got restless and let rip a huge fart, then started to try and be sick. I rushed outside with her and she continued to try and be sick without success. Fearing it was bloat I felt her sides and found them hard like a drum. I rang my vet who was just finishing, explained and he confirmed my fears. Rushed the 15 miles to him she was x rayed and it was found her large and small intestine were affected. Because of her age Ten and a half they advised me it would be kinder to put her down. All this happened within an hour, I knew speed was of the essence but it's that fast that if it's actually started it's virtually impossible to prevent.

    • I'm so very sorry for your loss. I've lost 3 pups unexpectedly -- foreign objects, sepsis. You rush them to emergency, you expect x-rays, maybe surgery, and then you hear the dreaded words from the vet, "I can't save him." Then, you're in shock, but you don't know it until realize you are going to your with just the leash and collar in your hand. And the emptiness of your home when you return.

They saved his life, moved his stomach to the side of his body and he lived until the age of 13yrs. No residual affects remained from the bloating. His other organs were not injured according to the surgeon. It was well worth the 3500$ 14yrs ago. He passed last year from a deep internal bleed. I will love him until i die and miss him every day.

    • If it were bloat, your dog would be miserable, and you would be unable to touch your pup's stomach w/o it crying/whining. Also your dog would NOT be active. It's always good to err on the side of caution. I'd call your vet if your dog's tum is something that out of the ordinary for him. You know your dog best.

    • I told the vet these same symptoms…that it seemed to be something gastro, my dog was restless all night and hacking/retching. I indicated she was still in good spirits, but she is such a tough girl. I could still touch her tummy, but indeed, it seemed more inflated than usual. We checked her poop and she has no parasites. So the vet thought I should try a cough medicine! That is so not the issue. I know something has been bothering her stomach. It’s not her respiratory system. Vets are so limited. So I just pray and get my family to pray. Try home remedies, like slippery elm and other “gut guard” mixtures. She does eat fast, but the last time I got her a slow feeder, I bought a ceramic one to avoid plastic. I believe that may be to blame for some of her now fractured teeth, so I sent that sucker right back.

    • My video was only to advise people about the subject of bloat, how it can occur, what can happen if it does. My GSDs get their bowl of Fromm kibble w/canned mixed in and water. They're rested an hour, and then they go outside, run to the fence or walk around the backyard, lay on the deck. But that's been my decision, and now all four of my pups are accustomed to the behavior and nap after their meals. You're responsible for your dog and its welfare, and you make the decisions on its behalf that you feel are best. Thx for watching.

    • I'm so very sorry for your loss. Bloat can kill a dog within a couple of hours, and usually no vomiting occurs. It sounds from your description that something very serious may have been going on internally, since you mentioned issues with her liver. I'm sorry you had to go through this and for your dog.

  • You mean there is nothing you can give a dog with bloat ????? It always ends up with surgery? I’m 70 miles from my vet the vets where I live are quacks. They killed my GS that I loved with all my heart and the other vet is a quack she killed my favorite Nigerian goat You just scared the pants off of me I get the feeding and I give my dogs the best high protein dog food plus they get eggs and goat yogurt plus some veggies I have a 5 month old GS puppy who is a horse and I feed her 2 times a day plus she gets calcium pills from my vet for her big ears what else do I need to do I also have Huskys and a Pittie

    @ravenbrown74@ravenbrown7410 ай бұрын
    • I didn't mean to "scare the pants" off of you. Bloat is extremely, extremely serious. This is a quote from www.preventativevet.com, "You 100% cannot and should not attempt to treat GDV at home. Even in the ‘early stages’ of GDV. There are no home remedies, medications, or supplements that are safe or effective to give a dog that is suffering from GDV/Bloat. No amount of Gas-X® or any other at-home or over-the-counter treatment will cure or help a dog or prevent GDV from developing." With that said, I own/have owned German Shepherds , Dobermans, Labs and other breeds in my 30+ yrs of owning dogs. None of them have ever had bloat. Some of the main keys to preventing bloat is feeding/exercise. If your dogs have been outside, active, running around, then rest them *at least* a half hour before you feed them. After you feed them, rest them again for a good hour or so if you can. Where bloat has the opportunity for occurring is, say someone feeds their dog dry kibble, and then the dog takes a long drink of water on top of the kibble. That creates the potential for gas expansion in the stomach and the kibble breaks down. From your description of what you're feeding them, they probably have a better diet than my crew. :-) I feed Fromm kibble, wet canned food, vitamins, and add water. I supplement occasionally w/vegetables and roasted proteins. Regarding the surgery, everything depends on how soon you catch the bloat and its severity, and how soon you can get the dog to the ER. Read up on the treatment of bloat by vets, but most vets, if it is bloat, will immediately begin IV fluids to try and get the dog out of shock. After that, again, it depends on the severity and timing. The vet I used for 20+ years had her Golden bloat, but she was able to get him to the clinic on time, and he was saved. In your case, I understand what you've been through. I watched my Lab die on the operating table, and I lost my Boston, Spunky, bc the vet didn't want to do foreign object exploratory surgery, because the x-rays and bloodwork didn't show any abnormalities. He died from peritonitis from undetected foreign objects. Thank you for watching my video. I try to help people who are unaccustomed to potential medical and behavioral problems. But there is no better way of educating yourself than to google and research. VCA hospitals has a website and provides a number of really good articles regarding canine health issues. When I research my Boston's IBD issues, I always try to look for academic medical studies, clinical trials and other veterinary publications. I always stay away from sites like "dogster", "AKC.org" which usually provides general information. Sorry for the very long reply, and wishing you the best with your pups. Sounds like you have a wonderful brood.

    • Hello and thank you for your question. Remember first, that I am not a veterinarian, so if you do have questions, please consult your vet to be sure. In my personal experience, I feed my dogs kibble, moistened with canned (wet) and then will add water on top of that. I don't add a great deal of water but enough so that the food is moistened and there's some water at the bottom. I do this to prevent my dogs from having predominantly dry food and then taking a long drink afterwards, which can potentially cause the bloat. I've fed my all of my pups this way throughout their lives. If they are active and playing, then I rest them before I feed them, and after they eat, they remain quiet for a good hour, before they can resume play and activity.
