    • Actually it's for a simple reason, the college gave her cards with only yhe phonetic spelling, and not the actual name for some reason, phonetics I learned phonetics in school for music class but it's certainly not a commonly taught thing, absolutely bad on the school's part, whoever had the idea to do that... brain dead, but the woman is fine

    • I mean if they were in IPA, I can see her getting some of these stumbling over what the symbols mean… They’re not intuitive and if you’re not trained, I can easily see not knowing how to pronounce them… Thomas > tɒməs Molly Elizabeth > mɑ.li ɪˈlɪzəbəθ Virginia > vɚˈd͡ʒɪn.jə Brotoski > bɹotaʊski That kinda explains too, why brotoski of all things was right while she stumbled over the others. I’m not sure that’s what happened but I could see someone who’s unfamiliar with those symbols stumbling around and producing some of those results.

She was able to read all the first difficult Arab names all right, basically she initially read the first few names of each group correctly, then BOOM.. she INTENTIONALLY messes up the other names so bad. Even the professor beside her didn't try to correct her bc he KNEW It's a joke!!

  • The reader was using the phonetic spellings that appear right next to the actual spelling. Even so, phonetic spellings have been used at graduations for ages now. This lady not only had never done this, but had never read a phonetic spelling, or had the common sense to switch to the written spelling. She surely could not have believed some white kid was named “Tahmoomay.” The university sent out perhaps the least competent person they could find.

    • That’s a small price international students pay having their names mispronounced. I’m sure they are crying themselves to sleep for having their names occasionally pronounced because it was formed in conjunction with a different language. People come here knowing that English is the primary language spoken here, and in the business world. Where it shouldn’t happen is from a university located in the United States. Asian people do it right when they name themselves names like “Joey” and “Betty” as their American names. They don’t b1tch about it.

  • I call bovine excrement. No way you get those mispronunciations from phonetic spellings. The announcer was either foreign with very little command of the English language or illiterate. Also lazy as she obviously didn't even practice these names in advance or ask for pronunciations. This was extremely disrespectful to these students. As a teacher I did my best to pronounce my students names correctly and had them correct me every day until I said they properly.

Phonetic alphabet is very easy to read if you know how letters sound. I easily read your example. There's no excuse for a presenter at a college to read that poorly. This is why college is now a joke and accepting weak excuses for it isn't going to make it better.

  • What’s sad is this person most likely teaches and the students probably can’t understand what she says. My daughter graduated from Mississippi Sate with a dual degree in Biochemistry and Mathematics. she had a chemistry professor who when asked repeatedly a question he finally said goo goo it. She filmed this interaction if the students can’t understand you the can not learn.

    • If you’re a university professor and can’t pronounce the name Thomas English is not your first language. My youngest graduated from the University of Mississippi this past Friday and they pronounced every name correctly.
