The hoopoe, which is immediately identifiable by its unusual black and white wings and striped feather cap, is prevalent in Israel and is the only species of its kind worldwide. Its large sharp beak aids in probing for insects and, on occasion, small reptiles, making it a noteworthy figure in Israel's nature, and it was recognised as the country's state bird during the 60th anniversary festivities.
