ANGRY TECHNICIAN! Customer Gets FIRED! Car kicked out!

We had a customer state that they needed a car towed to our shop from another shop. They had said they the other shop wasn't doing any work to their Saab and they wanted to get it running again. They also stated that they had two other vehicles and wanted to have them towed to the shop as well. I told them that I will agree to only one vehicle at a time as we do not have parking spots for multiple vehicle that do not run and have been parked for years. After moving the Saab to the lot, the customer failed to pay for the tow bill. They also stated they couldn't afford diagnostic of the first car right now. After several weeks contact was lost with the customer and he randomly showed up and again asked to have the two other vehicles towed into the lot. After denying his request he asked other shops in the area and proceeded to bad mouth every shop that had been trying to work with him. It was a farce to get free parking for a bunch of junkyard vehicles. After the neighbors and I found out his plot I promptly fired this non customer and moved his car out of my parking spaces.

    • A one pork chop story. 99% of the things that happen to us is our own fault. Your second sentence hits closer to home. Your third sentence whether you realize it or not applies blame to Ray. I think Ray is an awesome dude but Ray has no excuses, he was suckered outright and went along with it.. What should Ray have done? Initially.... When someone comes along and offers you a two pork chop story* ( a two pork chop story is a story takes takes the same length of time to tell as it does to eat two pork chops*). You say thanks but no thanks, don't get involved especially when it had to be towed from another shop, therein lies a conflict of interest, a red light should go off.. dont ask, don't get involved, you walk away If you really want to get involved, you ask the other shop owner what the issue is, after listening, you walk away. When a person says they have little money, you walk away, fledgling business can not afford charity, charity begins at home. If a person says they aren't in a hurry to have their car fixed until September, you walk away. You are not storage facility, to act as one you are assuming responsibility for damages to their car, another sign to walk away. Good intentions rode to hell on horse back, You can still be kind and shrewd at the same time.

When shop gives pushback or he fails to provide money for parts they tell him he has to remove the car. Then he con’s another shop into towing them to there lot and just keeps shuffling them! I’m guessing he lives in some kind of rental unit that only allows two cars that must be running!

  • My Manager at one of the parts stores I worked at was a big "The customer is always right!" people. One day he shocked me. Had a customer that wanted to blame me for everything since his car rolled off the production line. After warranting several expensive parts and taking a sales display floor jack and stand to the parking lot because the fellow insisted that I "look". My Manager walks up, puts his hand on my shoulder and asks, "So what's going on?". The customer proceeds to treat the Manager same snotty way he was treating me. Mgr asks to see the receipt for parts. A couple weren't even our parts. Anyhow, he tells the cust to go back to the original point of sale. Cust alternates between crying, screaming and pleading. Said we gave him best service ever. The guy took off squalling his tires. When I started to apologize mgr stopped me. Said I needed to discover the fine line between cust service and being a doormat. Told me later we did good business and didn't need to have him or his friends up here wasting our time when we had good, faithful customers that were happy to pay us money. 😂

I still think it's wrong though to tell him he can keep it on his lot, but then change his mind and leave him with nowhere to keep it. (even if he doesn't deserve it, a man's word is his word and he could be sued for that). I believe the man would win in court, even if he Ray wasn't originally obligated in any way to let him keep it on his lot, he was once he told the man that he would. I know evicting a car is not the same as evicting a person, but an agreement is an agreement... and in this video, he did admit that he DID have an agreement with the man and that he did violate the terms of that agreement.

Two things that were AGREED UPON. He gave the man the reason to believe his car would have a place to be stored (for months) and that it would be fixed, only to now have it not being worked on and having nowhere to store it. It was a verbal contract and it was admitted to be a verbal contract in this video. I don't dislike Ray and I don't judge him for this... but this is how it is. You can't make a verbal contract and then just break it. This man had a legitimate reason to believe that his car would be stored until the end of summer and that it would then be worked on... and a verbal contract was made. • My last wife did pretty much the same thing. One of my friends who is a diamond geezer, proper gent did her a favour fixing her stupid handbag Suzuki thing and all he did was charge her parts, swallowed the labour costs as he is a good friend and a well respected garage owner in this rural town. Well she didn't like that bill one bit so next time round she went to another garage in town and complained badly about being ripped off, conned etc, yes there are some hokey places around but this place she was slagging down is really damned decent so the second garage owner who drinks with my mate rings me mate up and relays everything, then goes out to the ex, tells her to eff off and within a day every garage for about 50 miles refused to even talk to her let alone take the job on. So she comes squinnying about it to me so I asked about and was told all about it and I was 100% behind the chaps, you want someone to do you a favour or they do you a solid favour, you don't slag 'em down you be grateful and throw them a bottle of something nice for doing it.

Basically works himself to death trying to appease everyone, charges substantially less than he should (in my opinion) for his time. I see so many of his customers trying to take advantage of this and get a cheap fix at short notice. Whenever i get my bill from him i add $100 onto the invoice as a tip because I know he doesn't charge me nearly what he should. He complained to the neighbor saying it was like a prison living there because I wouldn't allow any animals or any parties as I just renovated the place. It was more or less just to give him a place to sleep and cook his food. I ended up kicking him out and after I kicked him out I looked over the place and there were beer bottles everywhere, a few holes punched in the wall in a bedroom and he never cleaned, there was mud all over the place. I didn't want to be nosy so I never checked the place for the 3 months he lived there. Never again will I help someone unless it's family that I trust.

  • Worked at a dealer as a certified Mercedes tech. Had a retired Marine, with a classic Mercedes. He got on everyones bad side. The dealership owner told him:"We can't seem to please you at all. You gotta go. "

  • Other than being a front wheel drive, those Monte SS were fun to drive. I worked for a rental car company and we had a lot of these, the Impala SS and the Grand Prix GXP.

    • I had a GXP in '05 when they first came out, was fun but different. This Monte is in sad condition though for its age, good old neglect is compounded by the GM quality... 😂

  • I got a similar customer 3 weeks ago. A 2006 Nissan Murano with a bad alternator. The vehicle came on a recovery truck, so we swapped out his alternator, new battery and it started right up. It started overheating soon after, so the customer was notified. He literally said "yeah, i forgot to mention it was overheating" so i told my techs to perform a full inspection on it. It needed tires, lower control arms, tires, brakes, oil was leaking everywhere, coolant was leaking everywhere, nothing was right with it. Parts alone cost more than a clean Murano example. I've been going back and forth with the customer regarding getting my money for the alternator and battery job. Once I receive my money, I'm calling Dubai Police (I live in Dubai) to take his car to the impound yard if he doesn't remove it. The car is still parked outside with almost expired tags. Wish me luck! lol

  • At this very moment, I know a shop that is afraid to say 'no'. Yard is full of junk to the point there is no room. Waiting for the city to make him clean up his mess. He fired me as a customer too as I had complained about his constant turnover of non english speakers, mostly people with no mechanical background. Going back for constant 'corrections' got old for me too. Big hearted immigrant, great mechanic but lost control of his business.

  • Soon as you said "Cat 3126." I'm currently working for a company that salvage cores and build diesel engines ground up for UPS and other companies. And we work salvage Cat C7 and 3126, but my main job in there is to ground any cranks that needs it, so they're nice and shiny for the polisher guy.

  • i love to hear a good story! as a business owner i love seeing other companies really take their image and customer service really serious. When it comes to small business it's better to lose 1 and confirm the strength in the rest of them vs compromising and doing shit for people who don't appreciate the work.

Unfortunately, I'm sure it's difficult to come by the necessary tools and material support to continue up skilling, though I wish they would be confident to say "I don't know, though I will research and identify options" as I would totally return to the shop. 27 different establishments. :(. You rock sir, appreciate your approach and honesty
