The top ten reasons to seek ophthalmologic consultation discussed in the video are:
1. Kapag namumula o nagmumuta ang mga mata (discussion on “sore eyes” or eye infections)
2. Kapag nakakaramdam ng madalas na pangangati, pagluluha, fluctuating vision, at pagiging magalas ng mata (discussion on dry eye disease or dysfunctional tears syndrome)
3. Kapag madalas na sumasakit ang ulo (discussion on refractive errors, glaucoma, and migraines)
4. Kapag may “floaters” or flashes of light (discussion on retinal detachment and impending retinal detachment)
6. Kapag napuwing (discussion on corneal foreign body and the risk of bacterial and fungal eye infection in such cases)
7. Kapag may biglaan at “painless” na kawalan ng paningin (discussion on “eye stroke” - retinal arterial and vein occlusions ; retinal detachment)
8. Kapag malabo ang mata (discussion on error of refraction, presbyopia, and cataracts o katarata)
9. Kung may chronic medical illness katulad ng diabetes at alta presyon (discussion on diabetic and hypertensive retinopathy)
10. Para sa “well- eye” or healthy eye check up (discussion on the importance of baseline eye evaluation and regular eye check up even if there are no symptoms to screen for covert eye diseases which may lead to visual disability)
The discussion also touched on the differences between an optometrist and an ophthalmologist, current recommendations on gadget use in children, laser refractive surgery (LASIK) as well as dietary recommendations for eye health.
While this is not an exhaustive discussion on eye diseases, we tried to be as thorough as possible for the time allotted to us.
Footage courtesy of the marketing division of Premiere Medical Center in Cabanatuan city, Nueva Ecija, Philippines where the lay forum was held. In the video are Dr. Ivan O’neill Tecson, a glaucoma specialist, and Dr. Alexander Tiongson, a refractive surgeon.
