How to build a sustainable house using natural building materials

Location: Panchkula
Architect: Jitesh Malik, Studio Aureole
After successfully running the Aaananda Permaculture Project near Chandigarh, Manisha Lath Gupta and her family realised that it was time to live in the environment where they grow their produce. Living with nature meant living in a home built using natural materials. Aanandaa sustainable house is built using sustainable materials like rammed earth, stone, lime, brick, and traditional roofing systems. The natural building materials were sourced locally and Manisha also ensured that they hired local crafts persons. Some other features of the house include the underground cellar to store the produce, rainwater harvesting, waste water management and a biodigester.
The sustainable architecture at Aanandaa is designed and directed by the Studio Aureole team lead by Architect Jitesh Malik. Studio Aureole is a conscious practice, often bridging the artificial divides of product, interior, architecture and landscape. Architectural practice at Studio Aureole is about creating spaces that have the power to re-connect us with nature, with ourselves and with our communities. Their definition of sustainable goes beyond materials to include the social and ecological fabric that we inhabit. At Aanandaa, their approach has been to bring together an environmental sensitivity with a contemporary design sensibility and a socio-cultural imagination that fosters collaboration.

      @farmaanandaa@farmaanandaa9 ай бұрын
    • Forget about these people dear, these are still okay …and ma’am (only to Farmanaanandaa) please this is social media, people will talk, no one judging, it’s happening right in front of our eyes, and you have chosen to go public, so brace your self, relax your fine if you stick to basic courtesy (at least I say for myself I am just sharing thoughts,)…… ………I am actually in complete agreement with your comment, … it’s always these rich methods thrown on faces to keep the planet “sustainable”..just think how??…how?” from the perspective of a lower middle class or middle class person is that even possible?.??…..I mean these rich have psychologically reached a secure space, where at minimum they don’t have to worry about the “basics” living things required to live a life. (I am not at all talking about how hard one has earned or they work hard to keep these finances stable etc etc, that’s a different topic, just where this conversation started, that when one has a good wealth and is positioned as ‘rich’ in the society financial rungs). This very psychological strength gives you a sense of confidence and self esteem, and one is able to explore the life without any stress for the “basic human needs” (in Hindi it says ‘roti,kapda or makan’)…… ……….okay I will share a random example,: Jenifer Aniston or JLo or Beyoncé and many many many more, almost all the huge public figures, these huge celebrities/ powerful individuals, all, they constantly talk about eating healthy/ taking care of oneself/ taking care of your body & exercising/ being happy/ meditating/ do Pilates/ go hiking or swimming/ read books/ pamper oneself/ planting some kind of small or little plants/ blah blah blah etc etc…..but these same people insensitively, are seen dunked into the sinful unsustainable fashion practices by filthy rich fashion houses, …and promote them further more. I just don’t get it….i don’t……I get few things can be exceptions, where it’s about one’s physical security, but what about the other aspects of the life??…everywhere it’s thoughtless buying/ spending of unnecessary stuff. What about the bad habits of a human being???. And no sharing of opportunities among the fellow humans???…….such are the human societies created by us.

I do wonder how cold it gets :) I live in a brick building from 1931 in the centre of Bucharest, my apartment, albeit small, is intricate and has many corners and certain (not enough) rounded edges - I adore your home's vibe and you have all reasons to be proud of the living ecosystem you have achieved

  • And I thought my 1 lakh rupees budget was big for Mud House. Poor Me !!!

    @nishantaadi@nishantaadi9 ай бұрын
    • You are thinking about this the wrong way. Everyone has to make a house within their own budgets. But you have to look at this house as a substitute of the concrete and steel structure that could have been built instead. Keep a positive attitude, only then change will happen.

    • You will have to come up with a brief, work with an architect and find the masons. Nothing happens without putting in the effort!

    • Just think if 8 billion people planted a forest on degraded land and built a home of natural materials, how much better the planet would be.

    • @farmaanandaa it's easier said than done, Manisha. My wife and I have been searching to buy a small piece of agricultural land for the past 2 years and guess what, it's simply unaffordable. Degraded land you say, show me a way to buy them, I will grab it in an instant. We have tried all options, government offices, PMO, every door. So again I say, it's easier said than done, unless of course I have crores in my bank account, which is what it costs today. So request you to stop generalizing and assuming everyone is in a position to do what you are doing
