The past century has seen the borders of Palestine and then Israel shift. From the Balfour Declaration in 1917 - when Britain first promised a Jewish homeland - a fierce struggle over land and nationhood has taken place. Whether you need a beginner’s guide to the history or just a reminder, we'll take you from that date through to the conflict today.
Guest: Kevin Connolly, former BBC Middle East correspondent.
Host: Luke Jones.

  • A youtube channel Jazby has done an amazing job of tracing the region back during ottoman times. Middleeast was only weakly controled by the ottomans. There are 100s of battles fought between local rulers over the 300 years leading up to British rule. It was never peaceful.

  • What was the justification for settling Gaza?

    @tomn.9879@tomn.98797 ай бұрын
    • For the Palestinians settling there? Well, Gaza was close to Egypt, a strong regional power at the time, and was under Egyptian control until it was annexed by Israel.

  • The review score of Schindler's List dropped to 6.3 in Bilibili, after a surge of antisemitism in China Bilibili is one of the largest, if not the largest, video-sharing platform in mainland China with an operation mode similar to KZhead. This wave of antisemitism is largely due to Chinese official media's support of Hamas.

  • England controlled so much territory in the early 20th century…. Imagine how different it would be if they had just been like “Here you go Jewish people, take Jamaica or New Zealand.” instead of territory in the Middle East.

  • Mahathama Gandhi, believer of Hinduism and Lord Buddha's teachings, made the British Empire to crumble by using "PAssive Resisitance", non-violant war. His followeres were Matine Luthar King and Nelson Mandela. Christains and Catholics who came to East later became non-violnt and learnt to live with the Buddhsit and Hindus peacefully. Even Muslims in Sri Lanka are non-violant(unless they have other methods). I do not know how peaceful is the preachings of Jew prophats. Do they also beleieve in "An Eye for an Eye". One thing I know is both religions are called Ibrahimic religions(and Christian?). Spanish Catholics have spread the religion in Peru using weapons and Smallpox(brought about by angry Spanish God). That was many years ago. Now they are also peaceful. I am happy to be a practicing Buddhist lived along with Hindus in Sri Lanka allowing Catholics and Muslims to build churches near Buddhst temples.

    • "Starting in 1917" is the equivalent of saying "Let's talk about Japanese American relations. We can't go all the way back to the beginning so let's start in July 1945 when those ghastly Americans dropped two atomic bombs on peaceful innocent civilians and have militarily occupied that country to some extent ever since" Jews had been kicked around and kicked out of Muslim countries in the middle east far before 1917 and this video frames the whole situation from 1917. I would bin the whole history and just look at the situation as it stands today. There's a functioning advanced democracy that wants to live in peace and there's an Islamic "state" that is lead by people that don't want a two state solution because their goal is solely the destruction of Israel. That's the situation on the ground now. Pick a side. @@fraserct533

    • No. There's an occupation power led by a racist far-right government which is illegally settling and annexing land that doesn't belong to it, and brutalising and discriminating against residents of that occupied territory on the basis of their ethnicity.

      @beatonthedonis@beatonthedonis7 ай бұрын
    • @@idlehands1238that’s remarkably simple as written. But your viewpoint is biased and elementary. The situation is ridiculously more complex on both sides and neither are wholly guilty or innocent. Your story is one for fairy tales and children’s books. The perfect state and the bad guys who want to destroy it. Go read a book.

    • Where did I say Israel was a perfect state?It's just another advanced western state that's now facing an organisation that's sunk to the level of ISIS. They could have had a state that was the whole of the west bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem and yet rejected that in favour of this. I would rather the whole middle east sunk into the ocean and we could tow oil rigs over the place and be done with it; but we are where we are. @@ctheg2299
