I will actually struggle to watch this knowing the criminals, and they ARE criminals, have still not been held to account. They knew these people were innocent yet continued to prosecute, covered up their own failures, lied in court on oath, in documents, in public and knowingly sent innocent people to prison after destroying their lives and reputations. Absolutely obscene.

Our lovely local postmistress was one of these victims. She ran a great shop with a variety of essentials and gift items. She is still missed in the community . I remember her telling us about it at the time, and trying to fight against this injustice, she wasn't going to take it lying down. She went to the local press, local MP, got a solicitor, but still lost her livelihood and had to move away . The shop was the hub of our local area and we are poorer for the loss. I often wonder how she's doing and hope she got her name cleared.

The directors for Royal mail and the software company should be in jail. A pregnant woman was jailed, people went into bankruptcy, houses were lost and people died. What did this useless bunch of politicians do? Nothing absolutely nothing.
It may be worse than that. Civil servants and Government ministers may well be aware at least partially of what was going on and hoped it would melt away. We will see what Paula Vennells has to say in 2024.

Royal Mail is a completely separate company that is listed on the stock exchange. Post Office is another completely separate company that is solely owned by the British government. Things are further complicated though by the fact that both Royal Mail and Post Office were part of The Royal Mail Group up until 2012 when Royal Mail were privatised by Vince Cable and the coalition government at the time leaving the Post Office solely owned by the government.
There will only be true justice when the people at the Post Office who presided over this fiasco and knew these people were innocent spend some jail time.

It was a stroke of genius to have Toby Jones play Mr. Bates. The other cast were brilliant also but he was clearly the focus and he played it brilliantly. The impact of the ITV series was phenomenal and probably has done more than all of the documentaries, reportage and other items put together to bring to the fore the woeful mistreatment of our Royal Mail sub postmasters. Congratulations ITV and all of the cast of this magnificent series.

The people in charge at the Post Office must be charged - they knew the full picture. Their behaviour to these poor people was outrageous. The Postmasters were hounded, vilified and put under unimaginable pressure. There is no excuse. The management of the Post Office has been appalling and there has been NO accountability. 😡

I have followed this story from the beginning - thanks to Private Eye. Unbelievable that this story has received so little public attention. Hopefully this tv drama will bring this appalling story to wider public attention. And justice for those who suffered so much…….some of the people involved in this scandal at the top of the Post Office should be being prosecuted. And this damned government should be held to account aswell.
The cozy relationship between corporations, media and government seem to have colluded to ensure this story was buried as quickly as possible. If it wasn't for publications like PE, these horrific injustices would never see the light of day.
it's not just the post office that has criminalised ordinary people a lot of corporate bosses have the power to simply get people charged with theft without proper evidence and the police simply go along with it, I know this from experience and my lawyer has told me that most of these prosecutions get thrown out but in the mean time peoples lives are getting ruined I believe there maybe some sort of corporate fraud involved.

Thank you, Toby Jones, for explaining the story so succinctly. Along with Hillsborough, this must be one of the worst miscarriages of justice in British history. My heart goes out to all those wrongly accused and their families who suffered horrific abuse as a result of criminality and lying on the part of the Post Office. Good people were thrown to the wolves by shameless manipulators of the media and their acolytes. They all have blood on their hands. I wish all those who suffered so much so needlessly get true compensation for what they went through. If it means suing the government then go for it. Solidarity with you all.
Some years ago my late husband acted for a couple who worked so hard in their Post Office. It was so complicated and a Barrister who specialised in such cases was consulted, fees of course were astronomical and the couple who had to pay back a huge sum which the Post Office Reps said was missing, so they lacked the funds to proceed. They were totally destroyed,they moved away with their. Children because they couldn’t bear the shame , lives were ruined. I hope they have some recompense.
I hope paula lands in a very uncomfortable gaol. I hope she feels fully what she did. She thinks she is all forgiven, but the bible says we are to love justice. She refused to love justice or to show mercy. . She could have fixed all this years ago, had she been honest. The Angkican Church needs to defrock her.
I've followed this scandal for over a decade in Private Eye. There's no mystery as to why it happened - senior executives' bonuses were at stake. What is really appalling is the delay before the popular media jumped on board. It was clear ten years ago that there was a problem with the computer system and it was being covered up.

Our local sub-post office in Bristol was just around the corner from our house. The sub-postmaster was a lovely well-respected man and I remember him being accused early on in this appalling affair. He couldn’t live with the shame and committed suicide leaving behind a wife and 2 young children. How can this ever be made right?
Terrible. The best we can hope to make amends for such tragedies is that his death and this scandal result in a huge change for the better, for instance that no more will ANY computer data ever be believed as sufficient evidence in a prosecution, without other solid evidence. Perhaps there are a lot more bugs and possible miscarriages of justice due to computerised systems out there.
There are a lot of very nasty people on the Post Office side who need to face justice, Paula Vennells, Angela Van Den Bogerd, even their prosecuting lawyers Jarnail Singh and David Pardue are just a few and they all knew the Fujitsu system was a fault but didn't stop them chasing these poor victims. Nobody from Fujitsu have faced the courts either.
It would be brilliant if all those named above got their comeuppance. But we all know they will get away with it..

I worked at a hospital that installed a computer system that was essentially a “nursing 6:13 station medication floor stock” cabinet. Soon after implementation, there were rumors that 1 or 2 nurses were fired for stealing meds. It boiled down to 1 or 2 doses that were not signed out. The company sold their software as being 100% accountable. The lie was that it wasn’t. You open a drawer and anyone could take a number of medications from different slots. Then unfortunate nurses who lost their job just happyto be the last in line to open the cabinet drawer that day. Lesson learned: the powers that be will listen to a flawed software product above their employees
This ITV Programme has woken the public up and the last episode has not been screened yet. I suspect many, like me, "binge-watched" it. In our village pub last night everyone in a group of 5 people knew the story, I suspect that apart from myself, only one of them would have heard about this previously. Well done the team that put "Mr Bates vs The Post Office" together and had the guts to screen it!!!
During this time the Post Office near me was ‘temporarily’ closed (it never reopened) because the Post Mistress was arrested for fraud. I felt very annoyed at her dishonesty. I now feel so very very guilty about my thoughts about her. I never met her but I wish I could see her face to face and apologise about my judgment of her.
You didn’t know. But to be honest if you had seen her and she told you she was innocent would you have believed her? I would have been neutral but when it became clear that many people were effected you just can’t ignore the injustice. I had no idea the post office conduct their own investigations. That is shocking. To me that’s the crux of the scandal.

Unbelievably, Paula Vennells received a CBE in the 2019 New Year Honours List for services to the Post Office and to charity and she wasn’t too ashamed to accept it. The government is looking after Paula Vennells and you can bet Paula Vennells is looking after the government.
I remember a swift change of ownership of my local post office, and being in the queue there hearing people saying the previous one had been convicted of fraud. This would have been before this story was out there. But at the time his reputation and that of his family was finished. All so sad. That Vennells woman who became a vicar should be inside

I found myself crying throughout at the utter lack of empathy, the evilness in knowingly vilifying innocent people, the utter cruelty and arrogance of the government and those in power in the Post Office. This tragic story is beyond disgraceful and is beyond my comprehension that people thought this was the right thing to do. As a retired software engineer, we always suspected the computer system first, second, third… if there was a discrepancy in the system. We had to prove (not suspect) that the user was at fault, and then look at how to prevent future occurrences. It is utterly beyond me why they chose to blame the users rather than fix the bugs in the system, because they must have known that it was computer failures. How can they sleep at night? Absolutely!

Some people living through hell of The Building Safety Crisis have been very aware of the Post Office injustice. There are striking similarities. As victims of the former, I believe we have often been incredulous of the fact that these poor sub-postmasters have experienced something even worse than losing our properties and our financial security. They were told they were criminals, fraudsters, thieves. But they never were.
There is no accountability with public services in the UK! The nhs, the education system, water services……..none of them are in the least accountable . We are supposed to feel “ lucky” that they are serving us, even though WE pay their wages!

I've been following this scandal for years. It is without doubt the most heinous travesty of justice against good people who were just doing their job. The perpetrators of this crime, and in my view it is a crime, have not been named, are continuing to lie and be evasive, whilst innocent people suffer. Two editions of BBC's Panorama program several years apart highlighted the scandal and the efforts which senior management at both the Post Office and Fujitsu to cover up the truth. Add to this the excellent forensic journalism of Nick Wallis, who continues to investigate and publicise his findings on both BBC radio 4 and Panorama. I sincerely hope this drama adds more impetus to shaming those at the top. If all these utter bastards were doing was trying to protect the Post Office brand they've failed miserably.

I remember (repeatedly) reading the ongoing saga of this scandal in Private Eye. It seemed to move along at a snails pace despite the overriding evidence pointing to the innocence of these posties. hopefully full & final justice will be theirs in the very near future

What's staggering is how long its gone on for and for HOW LONG its clearly been a scandal and the brazen way that ICL/fujitsu ,the post office and government/police/judicial have swept peoples lives under the carpet with seemingly not a thought. In fact worse, sometimes its' seemed utterly vindictive. Many people should be in jail for this but at the least, why haven't they given the monies out and why haven't ALL the prosecutions been put aside.
Just after writing that comment.. the new story is that the post office has halved its estimate of compensation ( which doesn't include the monies they took from people falsely claiming fraud). "To date, 93 convictions have been overturned and, of those, only 27 people have agreed "full and final settlements". Meanwhile, 54 cases have resulted in either a conviction being upheld, people being refused permission to appeal or the person appealing has withdrawn from the process, according to the Post Office." Just unreal , no conviction is safe .
Private Eye gets a number of very interesting stories. I recall that they revealed that HM and Customs sold their properties to a private company and then leased them back. Not only did the company ask for more money the parent company was in a tax free haven - something HM and Customs were not aware of.
I used to work for Fujitsu years ago. On some home office and local council projects I was shocked how many bad practices they did. Doesn't surprise me. Still shocking that they still keep getting contracts

Kiwi here, I heard about this in 2022 through a British solicitor friend. It's shocking and surreal.
Looking forward to this as I used to work for the Post Office Security and Investigation Service (POSIS).The investigators ,known as the Gestapo by posties, were considered the cream of the service and had powers that the police don't eg interview without legal or union representatives present.Perhaps their reputation of always getting a conviction if they went to court completely overcame any sense of fairness and justice.My blood has been simmering ever since I heard about this but being old and cynical do not expect the culprits to do a day inside.
My union rep collaborated with my management and HR to gaslight me during my whistle blowing meetings regarding the abuse I received by fellow staff .nhs
POSIS investigators caused my dad to have a nervous breakdown. He was a PHG and they accused him of stealing mail/parcels from the cage. He was marched off the floor in front of his colleagues - who then gossiped to all and sundry. He was questioned for hours, and repeatedly told ‘we know you did it, just admit it’. Told him he was a thief and was looking at jail time. Turned out the week the items went missing, my dad was in the middle of two weeks annual leave. No further action. No apology from these scumbags. My poor dad fell into a deep depression that he never pulled out of.

When I raised a grievance with an ex employer because I was being bullied, I was told that there are no records of any previous bullying. I had mentioned I knew someone had been bullied out of my role by the bully before, which is why they said it, but several staff told me they were interviewed in relation to bullying before I joined and I was even given the persons name and told they were moved to another department, but then left the company. Like the Post Office, they will always make out there are no recurring issues and any one issue is isolated, because if they admit there is then they admit they are constantly failing.
As an Australian, I had no idea about this issue but I hope that Britbox or the ABC show it. We had our own issues with reliance on computers over common sense called Robodebt.
I'm trying to figure out how we can access it in NZ. Not much luck so far...

Toby Jones is one of the best British actors ever. He is so versatile. Along with Graham norton being a great actor too. Shame he doesn't do it now anymore.

The first time I heard on the news that post office employees were being prosecuted for fraud I smelled a rat and always believed the computer software was at fault.
I had absolutely no idea the full story until I watched this. So shocking. Brilliantly made programme, which hopefully brings this heartbreaking scandal to people's attention.

Through the years, being an ex computer pro, I read the initial Computer Weekly article and saw the various news items but with hindsight shamefully put it into the "oh that's interesting category". What this TV show has done highlights the power to really shine a spotlight on what potentially any of us could fall foul of: corporate malfeasance and a justice system that only works if you can outspend or at least match your persecutor. This should indeed be made an election issue with the party that pledges to clean up the government act getting my vote. With one caveat: that cannot be the party that oversaw the awarding of a CBE to Paula Vennells and set the UK on the course of irreversible decline!

Toby Jones is one of my favorite actors, (his Uncle Vanya before the pandemic was just fabulous) but I can't bring myself to watch this.
Apparently the mp andrew bridgen played a part in exposing or bringing this to courts I wonder if he will get a mention
It was a hard lesson I had to learn in my first brush with the "justice" system, and fortunately I had a lawyer who gently educated me. We don't have a justice system, we have a legal system, and there is often very little justice to be had in a legal system.
Saw an interview with a sub postmaster who was accused of stealing £22k. Was advised by union rep to pay up as quickly as possible to avoid it going to Court. Paid the post office £22k within 2 days, borrowed from his mums life savings. They still prosecuted him. Union rep advised him to plead guilty to avoid jail. Pleaded guilty. Sentenced to 6 months in Jail. Served 3 months Disgusting
Hope that PoS union idiot is called to account.

One of my favorite series is The Detectorists with Toby Jones. Will have to find a way to watch this series in the US.

This is upper public school management sneering down at working class post masters and just assuming they were all on the take, without a second thought or glance at the horizon system. Truly appalling and it’s disgusting that they are still in positions high up in companies. They should all be in prison and struck off from ever being a company director ever again. It’s seems when they balls up they get a golden handshake and an even higher salary somewhere else.
Britain is riddled with this cronyism. Many years ago I worked for Barclays Bank. Once a year the staff magazine produced an article about the composition of the board and executive directors. Almost the entire board attended just two Oxford colleges. Andrew Buxton was the CEO.
Some of the people being interviewed in the enquiry give the impression of having no education at all.
These people who participated in abusing those poor people need to be held to account .
I love Toby! I did an acting course with him at Edinburgh fringe in about 97 and he was incredible even then before getting the work and fame he has always deserved. The PO scandal was awful but unlike the Royal Bank of Scotland scandal where the bank set out to bankrupt their customers was also terrible….typical of so many horrible individuals making decisions in corporations who allow them to get away with such criminality…..awful. Well done Toby and the team behind this great series!❤

It’s definitely up there with the worst cases in UK history. Another is the blood transfusion one where innocent victims were given transfusion infected with hiv and hepatitis and are still waiting for compensation 50 years down the line 😡

Its not quite true to say the Post Office bosses got off scott free. Some of them had to hand back a small portion of their bonuses! An absolute scandal.

I was breathlessly recommending this drama to some friends just yesterday. Even after reading about the issue whenever it was in the news, I never really understood enough about it until I watched the dramatisation. Pod Save the UK just had a brilliant interview on why the drama was so effective, I would urge anyone who hasn't already to listen to it (you can find all episodes on YT). I believe that eventually there will be something resembling justice - but nothing can give back to these people what they lost: health, happiness, their loved ones in some cases, and simply all the years this horror took from their lives. Looking forward to the Grenfell drama now
Watched all last night and still deeply rattled by the details, whilst in awe at the production. Beautifully paced script and direction - plus a cracking cast. If the same team were to seek another real-life scandal to produce, there were some 140,000 SMEs very deliberately taken down by banks "miselling" of IRSAs (Interest Rate Swap Agreements - nasty little financial landmines) a few years back. With a similar pattern of abuse, ruin and little in the way of action, despite parliamentary huff and puff.
And just like with all the excess deaths only Andrew Bridgen was bringing it to people's attention. God bless Andrew Bridgen MP

I live in Australia but heard about this scandal when in the UK back in 2014. Bless you Toby for being part of this. I work with government authorities and based on my experience I am totally not surprised as to what happened. Until government authorities understand that they do not have a god status and that the consequences get exponentially worse as they ramp up the denial of fault, this will always happen. No one is immune from this. Australia has Robodebt which again blind faith in untested new technology

One of the best, and most purposeful drama's ever! It is up there with Erin Brockovich. One of the best films, ever.
This was compelling viewing and I watched all four episodes on New Years Day. I’d like to know what the public can do to lobby for a fair outcome, ie restitution, for all the postmasters involved.

I started watching this series then could not stop did it all in one session. Absolutely riveting. Brilliant drama NOW PRISON for all the liars with no exceptions
