The Maus is so big it's hard to get up on without handlebars so infantry couldnt just climb the maus and shoot the crew, because the maus has no machine gun for infantry as well.

    • the fear is well known, if you have open ports, enemies will try to chuck grenades into it. maus had a flamethrower for infantry. plus if someone did get up to a port hole and stick their gun into it, (maybe a commander port) the bullets will ricochet all around the interior harming the crew.

  • Maus wasn't a good idea. 1) Run over small, common AT mine. 2) Get tracked. Since a common detracking is a DEPOT level repair for such a huge tank, crew groans and does nothing. 3) Have to wait patiently for a gigantic (not yet invented at prototyping) tank recovery vehicle to pull you out, which will take several hours. 4) Giant, juicy tank gets bombed by every fighter-bomber in the area during that several hours. 5) Armor which has no problem against a 122mm to the glacis plate dies quickly and horribly against multiple 500-lb semi-armor piercing bombs to the turret roof. 6) PROFIT ??? Not if you're the Germans, you don't. More like SQUANDER ???.

Think of how much more energy a modern sabot round has compared to the 12.8, the 12.8 is not even in the same ball park. Modern sabots have well over double the kinetic energy compared to the 12.8 and still can have issues getting penetration frontally.

UK/US/RU hands. Single Tiger tank only got captured, even in working condition, it is being held in UK museum if I'm not mistaken, and once a year, or more, Tiger is being powered up and have few circles for audience to check out tanks. Why only one got captured and not blown up ? The crew was so desperate that they didn't even set charges and just ran away...that Tiger was up against few Churchill's in desert.

In 1945, Nr. II ("Eva") as well as Nr. V ("Loki") were captured by US forces in the period 21 March to 11 April 1945. Nr. VII, the test weapon, was captured by the US Army in Hillersleben and shipped to Aberdeen Proving Grounds but later scrapped.[21] Nr. VI ("Ziu") was captured by the Red Army, probably when they overran Jüterbog on 20 April 1945. This is on display at Kubinka, although marked as Nr. I ("Adam").[22] Nr. IV ("Odin") was also captured by the Red Army. The fates of guns Nr. I ("Adam") and Nr. III ("Thor") are not known. -wiki

  • Anyone's guess how they thought that this "tank" (more like a bunker on tracks) was going to change anything that late in the war. One Maus against 1000 T-34s or M4 Shermans? There was no way that this monster was going to impact the war in Germany's favor. Too expensive, too labor intensive (to build and maintain), impossible to move around, huge demand for fuel, a big target, etc. It was a failure even before they even started building one prototype. But Hitler was crazy for superheavy tanks and military equipment which sounded good on paper (i.e. the V3 Englandkanone).

    • +Corristo89 One Maus against 1000 T-34s? Easy cake, the poor 76mm guns would only scratch its camouflage (just look at the 122mm impact on it), the problem would be the lack of enough ammo. After that you have crush them by running them over with your 185 ton tonk.

    • Actually, by 1945, they were mostly variants of the T-34/85 with an 85mm gun, they would have been much better at killing a Maus. However, mobile artillery would have been best, since the Maus was so cumbersome.
