  • It's true what Simon Sinek, author of "Leaders Eat Last" once said, that great leaders are those who make the right decision under a lot of pressure, even if it costs them their position. This was the case of Jimmy Carter in my opinion. The media tends to praise those that cause recessions, rather than those who fix them.

    @nelsonsanabria3130@nelsonsanabria3130 Жыл бұрын
    • Jimmy didn't fix anything. The real rate hikes began after Carter left office. It was Reagan who had to deal with the severe recession in '82. Moreover, it was the Feceral Reserve that created the currency inflation by monetizing part of the cost of "guns and butter" policies of 60's and 70's. The Fed sucked excess dollars back out of the system that they created from the start.

      @josephpeeler5434@josephpeeler5434 Жыл бұрын
    • The problem with Jimmy Carter is that he was perceived as too weak and unsuited for the job. Telling Americans to wear a sweater to save money is a terrible PR message for the President of the richest country in the world, and the whole Iranian hostage crisis was a complete humiliation. And then Americans could see what was going on across the pond in Britain where unions plunged the country back to the 19th century and people had to literally use CANDLES just to do their work at night, so voters just decided that they were fed up with liberal policies, and thus the incredibly strong Reagan/Thatcher backlash occurred.

      @user-ls8ks7kv8c@user-ls8ks7kv8c Жыл бұрын
    • @Bruce Snyder LBJ was just as guilty of guns and butter. The so-called Great Society programs and part of the cost of the Vietnam War were monetized by the Fed. That didn't start with Nixon. Volcker didnt start raising rates until late in Carter's term. Reagan had to bear the brunt of 20% interest rates, which caused a severe recession in '82.

      @josephpeeler5434@josephpeeler5434 Жыл бұрын
    • @Bruce Snyder Reagan stuck with Volcker during the severe '82 crash. Republicans lost seats due to that recession. As for Volcker, his position of Fed Chair shouldn't exist, because the Fed is unconstitutional. Having said that, at least he allowed rates to normalize. He was the last Fed Chair who wasn't a crackpot inflationist.

      @josephpeeler5434@josephpeeler5434 Жыл бұрын
    • @Bruce Snyder Jim Grant is very good. He is influenced by the Austrian school of economics, especially their monetary and banking theory. Also check out David Stockman's book "The Great Deformation." He critizes both parties and every Fed Chairman since Arthur Burns with the exception of Volcker, whom he praised.

    • I used to be against the federal reserve but have since changed my mind. The Central Bank system certainly has its flaws but what would be the alternative? A barter system? Gold backed currency? Or precious metals as currency maybe copper and silver? What most people don't understand is that the population growth creates demand for more everything including currency. With the current system it allows loans and more free flowing currency on demand when needed. It's not perfect but it fits with our 7billion plus world population and economy.

I always think of regulation as a hindrance to business or the economy, or to limit abuse of the environment, workers or the government... but it does work in the other direction I suppose.
