This is one that even the police say will be a Netflix miniseries someday. On April 17, 2023, more than $20 million in gold was stolen from Pearson airport in Toronto. Nobody was hurt, and the crooks got away. It was one of those kinds of thefts. You can picture the scene in your head.
Exactly one year later though, police announced arrests, including those of two Air Canada employees, making clear they believe it was at least partly an inside job. How did the crooks pull off the initial caper? How did the cops catch them? What happened to the gold, and who will play whom in the adaptation?
GUEST: Andy Takagi, reporter, The Toronto Star

  • This might not be the largest heist. Go back more than 50 years when a safe encased with several feet of concrete that was considered impenetrable was broken into in Vancouver. Few, if any clients carried insurance for which there was no apparent need. Safe from fire. Secure from theft. Beyond the gaze of suspicious authorities that might discover through the amount of an insurance policy that certain individuals possessed objects whose value were of interest, matching that lost to crime. No one paid any attention to the roar of the compressor and pounding of jackhammers that was working on a building two doors away on a weekend. Chances are that the security system was shut off after nearby construction triggered several false alarms. Millions were lost. Adjust that amount for inflation.

  • If I was 30yrs younger with a zest for chance I may have taken these odds .... Hide my share of the gold ...even if you got caught what's the worse that Canadian law could do to you if convicted . 10yrs at best + 1/3rd off for good time. That's more than 150k per yr for doing easy time .... not that bad of an offer and coming out rich if you are smart .... Thanks Justin ... making the go big or go home deal sound a whole lot more attractive to our next generation, Not to mention immigrating to Canada a whole lot more attractive !!

  • CBC romanticising organized crime. Same people infiltrating Air Canada were caught smuggling automatic weapons. Who do you think were going to be the ultimate customers of those weapons and what do you think they were going to use them for?

  • Easy......we let the Americans take care of the problem. We were more worried about giving the OTHER 5 criminals bail.....5 MINUTES after they got arrested.🤣

    • Or devoting all policing to people misgendering other people, while delivering coffee and donuts to terrorists blocking GTA bridges and roads.

  • A random 'traffic stop' is how this got 'cracked'. This does nothing but enforces the 'carding' method of policing.
