Back then, you could say the Disney characters were real, because essentially they were!

    • Up until 1960 every scene was filmed out by principal cast members for references. This ended when the “Xerox era” began due to the financial failure of Sleeping Beauty and major budget cuts were made to the animation department. Instead, the animators shot reference films of themselves using hand held 16mm or 8mm film as needed. When The Little Mermaid was made, they brought back reference footage with Jodie Benson doing a lot of scene recreations.

      @ColdWarShot@ColdWarShot Жыл бұрын
    • It's not just for reference! They actually traced over the live action version frame by frame for a lot of movies! It was a very common practice back then called rotoscoping. A very fascinating and underappreciated lost art!

      @_veronica_r@_veronica_r Жыл бұрын
    • @@_veronica_r The only film that used rotoscoping was Snow White. Disney hated rotoscoping and refused to allow his animators to do it. The films were not for rotoscoping use. Marc Davis explained it as cheating. He, Frank, Ollie, and Mitt have all discussed the issue of Rotoscoping and most had a distinct distain for the technique often citing the Max Fleischer cartoons’ heavy use of it.

      @ColdWarShot@ColdWarShot Жыл бұрын
    • @@_veronica_r Also, one only has to watch the B rolls from the animation department to see that they weren’t rotoscoping. The Animator leads would pump out the rough sketches of their characters for every scene. They would hand these off to the tasked animation who would then trace these onto the cells. Once reviewed and approved, they would be “inked” with indelible ink and sent off to be colored.

    • Well, Disney did fuck her career. They basically copy wrote her voice so she could never perform again. She had a handful of uncredited small roles (The bit in the Tin Woodsman's song that says "Wherefore art thou, Romeo?" as an example). She was never credited as Snow White either. That was her entire career. It was basically the only thing she could be from then on.

      @Starsheen@Starsheen Жыл бұрын
    • @@Starsheen Well apparently she felt special like an icon herself. She also was able to perfectly re-recorded her voice when converting the old records to videocasette. Some of the old voice clips were corrupted. She lived rather handsomely.

    • @@mattybrunolucaszeneresalas9072 Did she? She was only paid the equivalent of $16k in today's money for her role in Snow White. She later sued Disney for shares of the record profits but lost. She only did limited promotion of the character, not enough work to live on. I've never read anything that she lived lavishly. Her husbands were mostly average men. I've never read anything about her living comfortably based on a Disney paycheck. Doing a few hours of additional voice recording doesn't pay the bills for long.

Loved Song of the South… it annoys the shit out of me how they jumped on the “racist” bandwagon, when in fact it should be celebrated by the fact it was the FIRST ever live action/animated musical; Disney dissed the whole segregation shit and had both black and white actors - and the main character is black at a time when racial tensions, especially in the South, were at a high… Song of the South should be loved and celebrated, not hated and forgotten…

Eleanor Audley was basically the real life Lady Tremaine/Maleficent, Kathryn Beaumont as the real life Alice, etc. This is essentially lost when they went 3D animation sadly.
