This was a proper discussion. Having an official being that expansive with his thinking and challenging the interviewer with Ath and Nas coming back at him was superb. I know they know each other well which created comfort but I was a kookaburra skeptic and this was educational. Rob Key giving clear details of the why was excellent. Thanks boys!
Derek Underwood was as Rob says, a lovely man. Back in the late 80's, he was part of a full Kent side that played two benefit matches against my local team in Paddock Wood; later, Deadly moved to the town and lived there for many years until his passing. A couple of years back, with cricket at the ground threatened due to the building of a new leisure centre, a charity match was organised to highlight the issue - Deadly's wife brought him round to lend his support. Despite his dementia making his memory poor, Derek did remember playing there and was full of praise for the facilities. He drank tea, ate cake and chatted to those of us there as if we were old friends. As Rob says, a quietly spoken, polite and extremely friendly man who was a giant of the game - averaged under 26 per wicket in tests, which was a remarkable achievement. Nice to hear the guys paying tribute here.
I saw Underwood play against India in 1972 at Calcutta, Eden Gardens. It was the first time I went to a cricket test match and I cannot forget the ambience in the ground with a hundred thousand or more spectators howling with every England wicket falling. Underwood bowled well but English fast bowlers Chris Old and Bob Cottam did most of the damage to Indian batting. At that time India won against England very infrequently ,even in India. India had three great spinners Bishen Bedi, Prasanna and Chandrasekhar who were in great form and India managed to defeat England, almost a second eleven with Tony Lewis, a debutant leading the English side. I will never forget the madness of the crowd who all came inside the ground and danced and hugged the pitch after the match was over. I t seems it happened yesterday.
That sounds like a formidable India side.
I cant argue with a point Rob made. More difficult pitches for bowling will improve the standard of bowling. Simple.

I always shake my head about the Poms going on about the 2005 ashes. The real bottom line is that if Glen Mcgrath had not rolled his ankle, and Ponting had not had a total brain freeze at one toss, then Australia would have won that series as well. 2010/2011 fair enough, but 2005 series has been totally overblown! (And even then Warne took 40 wickets and almost won that series on his own).
You can use 'ifs' and 'buts' for anything. Aussies often conveniently forget they were totally outplayed in the OT Test (when McGrath did play) as well. Oz lucky to escape with a draw there with more than 50 to get and 9 wickets down. The fact is it was a great series of fine margins and England won more of the clutch moments to deservedly win the series.
So in other words, you’re claiming a moral victory?
The 2005 ashes was a good series in that it was very close and, yes, you are right, could easily have ended differently. I'm English and have heard them banging on about 2005 for decades now. You're not the only one bored of 2005.

A good interview. Nas didn’t hold back his punches and I generally think he’s an astute thinker/pundit of the game but he seems to be straw manning Rob’s arguments here
I totally back Key with this. As an England fan I want us to do well/be competitive everywhere and in all conditions.
These interviews are a breath of fresh air. More interviews should be conducted between friends. It leads to more honest and open answers as they are clearly comfortable with challenging each other and getting stuck into stuff. Rob Key has been an excellent director of cricket. Always love listening to his insights.

If Keysie wants 85 mph bowlers, why on earth does he keep picking Ollie Robinson?
Apart from pace, they are also slightly obsessed with high release points. That is why they have always been keen on Robinson
He is also an useful batsman. He has the capability to score 30 quickfire runs down the order.
Think he's good and quick enough if he takes the effort to keep his weight off and to be fit enough to play test cricket but it doesn't appear that interested

Keys make such a valid point at the end you want to identify the talented players early and currently there are alot of mediocre players looking like gems who then get found out quickly in international cricket.
I love how Rob gets abuse but his thought process is sound and the only way England will become a force in world cricket again is to stop banging their heads against a brick wall doing the same old things year after year. The whole grass roots system needs changing as well and to be much much more inclusive to all children, not just those wealthy enough to play!

Your 1st choice selections have some major flaws; Hales has retired from International cricket Moeen is too old Willey and Foakes are only beneficial in England at best...but both are also too old Jofra is not an option as he hasn't played since 2019...but I understand his inclusion if he was fit Alternatively; Duckett should be an automatic choice for all white ball cricket Sam Curran and Ben Curran would both be players I would have in the T20 side Topley is a T20 specialist and the best pace bowler we have Stokes still has a part to play in T20...and he may be able to bowl 4 overs Although Rashid is still able to perform at T20 I would keep him as a reserve...Rehan Ahmed may well be a better option. If Jofra isn't available my T20 team would be: Buttler, Salt, Duckett, Brook, Stokes, Jacks, Livingstone, T Curran, S Curran, Wood, Topley. If Jofra was available he would come in for Wood. Otherwise my initial squad players would be: Crawley, Bohannon, Bairstow, Muyeye, Ahmed, Rashid, Potts, Robinson, Atkinson That's a core group of 20/21 to be trimmed down to 15 for the WC.
We should move on from Jofra Archer. If he’s fit enough to play cricket abroad now but Key is talking about him taking it easy and maybe next year..?! Come on, it’s ridiculous.
This guy definitely never saw Pat Cummins career path bro started playing in 2011 and was injured. He played his first summer in 2017 and now look at him.
i always remember what Australia did with cummins, they sheltered that guy for almost a decade, then unleashed him on the cricketing world.
Don’t agree with Key that England has been a middling test team England team of 2009 which went on to win Ashes in Aus then in India 2012 was a very good team
That was a 3-4 year period under Flower where we became a very good test team...but even then our position at no1 was fleeting. Since then we have performed in white ball cricket but we were on a downhill slope in test cricket until Key/BMac took over...and even then after a first season of success we have fallen away in the 2nd season.

Qualiity cricketers will come through the system whether ure playing with a kookaburra or a dukes, the test of time shows that. The best test sides play with a balance, attack when need to, soak up pressure when need to and play to the situation and conditions as and when required, this current england side doesnt do that and doesnt think a test shud last 5 days, and thats why their bottom of the test championship, as nasser said, this side needs to start learning its lesson and getting results.

Rob Key talks well but it is clear the England team play in another way ie their own game . This is the difference . Rob Key has no say the way England plays . Even if he does talk to Stokes and Macallum and says what he has just said here ….they don’t listen . That’s clear now .

I don't understand why Stokes doesn't like draws , surely to god a few draws would get them of bottom of league.
I disagree with Key, who I do admire, but our batters have been the main issue in the Test side. Sticking with certain players who get one good score in 6-8 innings isn't helping. They are happy to switch the bowlers around a lot & they've been consistent bowling & saving the batters every innings. I don't Agree with Nas about Burns, Sibley & Lees as they've all been given a lot of chances for England & theyve failed miserably. MENTALITY - is the difference between a Domestic talented player & an International player. Thats what they need to be looking at & how quickly they can adapt to different scenarios & have the common sense that play the situation not the mantra. Hope its a good 2024-25 season
I don't understand the mindset of so many old guard in Cricket, even Nas who I swear was pretty much backing England after the Ashes and most of India but now seems to be just focusing on pure win rate. I'm sorry but most England fans would prefer this style of cricket compared to the Root era and that of the 80s/90s! Nas is one of those who thinks you need a team of hardworking players along with 3 or 4 superstars who will get the team over the line and Keysie wants to get a team of players who can all be match winners on any given day....Its like Nas has a purely English mentality and Keysie is looking at Australia of the past and creating that mindset. To make a big change you have to reset and change everything. Ferguson at United, gets all the plaudits for being the best ever and what they won under him....the guy after 3 seasons was 1 match away from being sacked and having won nothing, fans were sending his wife death threats to their home phone....But the man had a vision and stuck with it and look how long his legacy lasted!!! Even Wenger done the same, completely changed Arsenal from boring to the most beautiful football in the league for decades!!!! You have to stick with a vision and I for one believe in Rob Keys!!!
