A while ago I made a video saying that Gaijin should not add the infamous Sturmtiger (aka 38cm Sturmorser) to War Thunder, as it would probably be both frustrating to use and play against. After getting a test drive for the ungainly heavy tank turned assault vehicle, I think I was more or less correct. The 380mm rocket has abysmal velocity and loves to do no damage sometimes. It also can be destroyed if someone shoots the barrel, sending you back to the hangar real quick. Don't get me wrong, it's definitely fun for a bit, but it does get old.

The Sturmtiger Is Very Dumb
The Sturmtiger, the tank where you can miss by an entire post code and still kill multiple targets from halfway across the continent.

Imo worst thing about sturmtiger in game is the fact that rangefinder give you for example "1100m" for a target, but it really stays at 1170m, so have you idea how much time and shots are you gonna lose before actually hit the target?

It's also the tank where a Soviet t-44 can survive a direct turret hit and only lose its commander.
Unless your explosive damage hamster dies and your shell washes harmlessly over your enemies. Hasn't happened to me cause I have been making sure shell makes direct hull contact. But apparently a few guys are upset about it.
IS tank surviving a direct hit from a 380mm rocket is the most on brand thing for this game.

I was playing around with the protection analysis for the 38cm shell yesterday, and saw something that almost made me spit out my drink. If you simulate a 38cm shell going into one of the big stowage boxes on the side of the Boarhound, the armor deformation goes so crazy that the stowage box balloons out taller than the turret and about half the length of the vehicle. If you simulate the round hitting one of the Soviet AA trucks, the armor deformation is so extreme that the truck basically ceases to exist. It’s incredible to look at.
I mean, I don't think that's wrong. XD I tried putting it right up against the barrel of some tanks. Most just disintegrated half the barrel, but some of the more hilarious results had the barrels ballooning to such a degree as to resemble a blunderbuss.

The Sturmtiger is one of those tanks where you can't be mad while playing it - you whip it out knowing you're at a disadvantage just by choosing it and then have fun with how stupid it is

my only problem is how inconsistence of that 160kg of TNT Rocket is, i expect a direct hit would obliberated any tank in the game because...wow that is quite alot of TNT just to get a barrel and 2 crew out...bonys with both tracks

My favorite Sturmtiger story is the only one where it was recorded with tank kills. A Sturmtiger on the western front was ordered to destroy a bridge over a river in France to slow the allied advance, so the Sturmtiger in question went to a hill overlook of the bridge, took aim, and fired. What supposedly happened is that it severely overshot the bridge, and just happened to land in between 5 Shermans in an American camp that were refueling, and destroyed all of them. Reasonably, the Sturmtiger fucked off after that bc a 38cm rocket randomly annihilating 5 mediums at once would raise some alarms among the enemy

pro tip: Set the range to 100m to account for rapid drop at the start. If the tank is less than 100 meters from you, just aim the 100m mark at its tracks.
I’m surprised at how many people don’t know about this, but in the controls settings you can make it so your scroll wheel adjusts elevation rather than zoom, it’s really useful for distance shooting.
@@C10uD50 That's what I've had mine set to for years. I almost never raise the gun sight the way Spookston does anymore, I always use the scroll wheel and set it.

I have to say it was really funny being in the M16 AA screaming at the top of my lungs as this thing barrelled towards me(with its round somehow resisting all of the 12.7mm rounds being launched into it in the barrel) and then proceeding to comedically annihilate my vehicle.
...Was that me? I feel like that was me. I seem to remember being on the other side of that exact scenario.

I feel like it should just be an instant kill no matter what if it directly hits a vehicle just because no matter the armor, even a maus would have it's crew be vaporized by the blast. Also they should add the churchill AVRE with the 290mm mortar.

I could not agree more. I think it should be treated more as bombs are, with a guranteed destruction radius and a larger, less-damage radius.

When the Sturmtiger event was announced, I made an immediate rush for the event. I don't care if it's viable or not, this has been a vehicle I've wanted to see since before I started playing WT. Sturmtiger has always been one of my favourite WWII vehicles.

It's shell has 135kg of TNT compared to the 125kg that a 250kg bomb has so it should have a slightly bigger kill Radius (about 7-8m) but I can get a direct hit on a tank and it still survives. Great

One thing that I learned from watching people play the Sturmtiger: It has a mortar as it's main armament. Use it like a mortar. Don't aim. Just point in the general direction, estimate the range, and watch the fireball. P.S. The whole thing is also massive giggle factor for me. Love how dumb it is

Ill be honest this is pretty much what I wanted from a Sturmtiger in WT. Yes, its stupid, dumb and completely NOT meta but thats part of the charm. Its alot like the AVRE and KV2, where the whole point isnt really to be this top scoring 6000+ points dude in a PT-76-57 or something, but just be a big tonk that can obliterate pretty much anything you point it at and just have fun. But thats just my thoughts on it.

It’s definitely a fun reward and collectors item. In a few months once people have stopped using it as a front line tank, there will be times when you turn a corner in something only to spend 2 seconds contemplating life as the rocket flies at you.

to be honest, there have been many matches in my KV-2s where I've topped the team list. It can do a ton of damage since they've put it at 3.7. I've also seen people do some carrying in the AVRE.

Someone in a match I played got a triple kill on Hürtgen on match start, pretty much the way you did it; 3 Hellcats capping the enemy cap zone in one shot. Man was straight up playing World of Tanks artillery for that shot.
Considering they were hellcats they were probably planning to rush for CAS Whoever did that is a hero

I really like it when Gaijin adds a lol tank like Sturmtiger because it brings back joy into the game. Most people aren't even trying to be competitive while playing it and because of it the game becomes what it should be all along. A place where you can just fool around in your favourite tanks and vent out some stress. Usually it's the exact opposite.
*Imagine just driving along ready to take the first point and you see a giant brick being lobbed at breakneck speed right into your tank out of nowhere.*

hot tip for playing this, the rounds initial dropoff is more severe than the arc, so set your rangefinder range to 50m to be able to treat it as a normal round in the scope

Playable artillery has been in for a while. Look at the Sturmpanzer II, or the Brumbar, or the Su-122, or the M8 Scott. And there's been rocket artillery with the M4 Sherman with it's T34 Calliope launcher, M26 Pershing with it's rocket pods, BT-7 with a pair of comically large rockets on it's turret, Katusha truck with it's MLRS rails... But yeah, they added in the big meme.
I just got it and I gotta say, even though I was initially against adding it to the game, it's the perfect balance of pure meme potential combined with just the right amount of explosives to make it fun to play and somewhat balanced. Definitely not meta or even op as some people suggest, but fun nonetheless. 38/100 points
It helps if you use it properly it's a mobile moarter piece it was so heavily armored because of the environment it fought in which was flat grassland so it was easy to spot basically any approaching armor. It wasn't made to run up on positions it was designed to obliterate them from a distance
From what I’ve tested there seems to be a bug with the drop compensator being off by about 100 meters in your sight. I would rangefind what I would try to hit perfectly dial it and it would always be roughly 100 meters short. and the crew I have them on is maxed trained on rangefinding so I know it’s not that
I think it should get its extra 50mm plate on the lower glacis, that'd help the sturmmörser a fair amount already. Also it has a bug currently where it can be overpressured by anything if it hits close to his barrel.
The overpressure makes sense if you think about it. If you have a round in there it will probably go off, and if you're reloading your 380mm breach is wide open.

the breach is empty only after your first shot i think, then it seems to be permanently loaded even after firing. iron released a video testing it and if the breach is damaged it magically spawns a shell into it also.

Sturmtiger is fun because you jump into the game with it knowing full well you won't get anything, but then the sheer joy of "how tf did that work?!" when you do get someone is just chefs kiss. I love how Spook is just having fun with this lmao

While I am happy for fans of the sturm, I really wish gaijin let us have other options for those of us not wanting that tank like Tog II*, or OV-10 (I would suggest mohawk or Cessna Lynx but i doubt) or Boulton Paul Defiant. I mean not really meta vehicles and in the Defiant a completely nuts vehicle, but would have been nice.

this thing is a beast in arcade (assuming you don't get bombed by cas, flanked, you dont miss your shot) cuz of the name tags. I set the zeroing to mouse wheel and the sensitivity of it to 80+, so now you can quickly adjust
you still get rain down by cas in AB though, like alot since there is no limit to spawn air

I just set the elevation to 200 as a baseline when firing horizontally to compensate for the drop.
There’s a bug where even if you’ve shot your round out the barrel if the barrels damage a magical shell goes in and can be shot, even though the reload isn’t finished.

I love this tank, I used to try and be and artillery like that with the type 75 SPH but it didn’t work out to well for me. Now that I think about it, I’d love to see you do a review of the Type 75 SPH if you’d be up for it. Maybe you can show me how to use it properly.

The type 75 is definitely one of the favorite vehicles in the whole game. The trick is to aim at roofs and for American heavies, aim directly at their turret cheeks for sontant kills. The proximity fuse is incredibly fun as well. You can also shoot below their tracks to destroy tanks. Just never try to kill tanks from the sides, there's nothing to pen there.

The Sturmtiger actually isn't a tank meant to engage armoured vehicles but an assault support vehicle meant to take out bunkers; other static defense structures and if necessary whole cityblocks. So precision aiming was not a first requirement.
My only problem with the sturmtiger is that the whole team uses them and nobody is playing actual tanks anymore , and because of that we lose quick and get rushed by the whole enemy team , basically not enough distractions at the moment 😂

I feel like it doesn’t fit, on one hand, it can spawncamp from miles away because of the drop off (like arty, but any range) and has an incredible gun. On the other hand, bad reload, awful ballistics. The br is fine, by the way, lower teir would be worse- more tanks with stabs that are smaller, so it would be worse to aim and fire

@@kh2b573 the barrel you see is a shield to protect the actual barrel inside and it have no hitbox damage, so you have to shoot the rocket or as least hit near rocket to disable it
A useful tip for this. If you're always reloading they can't shoot your projectile in your barrel. So if you get ready to fire as soon as you're projectile comes back. It minimizes how often you get killed by your own explosive being hit

Would love to see you play the merkava 4m. I play Israel almost if not most of the time and by now I will say it is an amazing tank, fun, versatile and leads me to top of leaderboard most of the time even with the nightmare that top tier is right now. I’ve switched between countries a lot since I completely maxed out Germany and US, right now Israel is my go to and the merkava being my favorite vehicle.

The way i play it is to just act as a mortar On the map it tells you the length of each grid square and once a enemy is marked on the map i do quick maths and lob the shot in their direction it works surprisingly well i even would shoot the ground if its a open map to have a hull down position to lob shots
