Based on a true story, Father Stu is an unflinchingly honest, funny and ultimately uplifting drama about a lost soul who finds his purpose in a most unexpected place. When an injury ends his amateur boxing career, Stuart Long (Mark Wahlberg) moves to L.A. dreaming of stardom. While scraping by as a supermarket clerk, he meets Carmen (Teresa Ruiz), a Catholic Sunday school teacher who seems immune to his bad-boy charm. Determined to win her over, the longtime agnostic starts going to church to impress her. But surviving a terrible motorcycle accident leaves him wondering if he can use his second chance to help others find their way, leading to the surprising realization that he is meant to be a Catholic priest. Despite a devastating health crisis and the skepticism of Church officials and his estranged parents (Mel Gibson and Jacki Weaver), Stu pursues his vocation with courage and compassion, inspiring not only those closest to him but countless others along the way.

  • I’m Orthodox and my wife and I absolutely love this film. It isn’t perfect, no, and yes, as a Christian, there are some parts that feature some foul language. But if you come from the rougher side of life like we did, if you had that kind of past like Father Stuart Long did, then you will know why it was necessary to keep that kind of stuff in this film. This is a brilliant film and I guarantee if you watch it more than once, you will begin to notice certain things, very specific scenes that carry great meaning and symbolism. This film is most especially for those of you truly suffering, who might not yet have made that step just yet. Perhaps you feel angry at the life God gave you, or with the cards you were dealt. Then you should definitely watch this. May the Lord bless you and may the Theotokos be with you. ☦️🙏

    • Exactly. He came from trailer trash culture. Of course they say f this and f that. This movie does a great job showing what awful void can be created in your life when you have no religion, no code of laws for yourself and are just drifting with no sense of purpose. Something Stuart Long learns to rise above and help his parents rise above as well.

    • I am an ER doctors and. work in a Catholic Hospital in the South. I’m usually calm but occasionally lose my temper and start cussing. It seemed every single time I did this, I’d turn around and there was Deacon Dave (one of the hospital chaplains) standing behind me smiling. I’d say sorry Deacon, I lost my temper. He’d always laugh and say “I used to work in the oil fields when I was a young man, I’ve heard a lot worse.”

  • I really love how Carmen was always at his side up until he was ordained. Of course Stu hurt her when he chose this vocation. But eventually she got engaged to another man, and she did help petition Stu to be ordained. Her true purpose really was to bring Stu to God so that he can be of service to his will. Goes to show we only understand God's plan in retrospect

  • “Hear me out. All our outer nature's wasting away. But our inner nature is being renewed every day. This life, no matter how long it lasts, is a momentary affliction preparing us for eternal glory. We shouldn't pray for an easy life, but the strength to endure a difficult one. Because the experience of suffering is the fullest expression of God's love. It is a chance to be closer to Christ.” So much truth here, especially the moment I’m living through. God is still good.

  • I’m not a Christian but this is an example how a movie with the values of Christianity should be made , it tells its story first , it never gets to preachy and it doesn’t trash other peoples beliefs or make every non Christian character a jerk just to prove it’s point

  • Words are so powerful... this is why Jesus taught us that our words can ruin us or glorify God and us in God. In a way, Fr. Stu is almost like a type of St John Vianney because of how many hearts and souls this man brought to God by saying 'yes'... wow... God is so amazing; if we only let Him do what He wishes with us... Does anyone know if there is a cause for Fr. Stu's canonization opened?
