About Me:
I am a professional singer with 30+ years of experience living in Dublin (originally from Ohio) and singing regularly in cover bands throughout Ireland. Over my career, I’ve sang in bands such as “The Runaways” (not the Joan Jett band, we were only 15 at the time and hadn’t heard of her band - this was before the internet!), and “White Knights” - both of those bands in Ohio before I moved to Los Angeles and formed an original band called Mood Trip, which was fairly successful in the mid-late 90’s producing our own music (listen here: www.moodtrip.com/mtd/audiopage...) and playing the sunset strip regularly (Whiskey, Roxy, Coconut Teazer), but eventually I married an Irish girl and moved to Ireland where I have sang with cover bands such as The Glitter Bugs, The Usual Suspects, Spring Break, and Masquerade. I have also recently started teaching vocal tutorials at BIMM Dublin as well as singing in cover bands regularly for a living now (scrapping the day job and focusing only on music since 2018). I have been lucky enough in my career to support Cher in Belfast SSE Arena 2019, and sing U2’s “Vertigo” with U2’s very own drummer Larry Mullen on the kit in 2016.
Why listen to me?:
* I didn’t start a good singer so I’ve learned a LOT over the years and I want to pass that learning on to YOU now.
* I’ve made a TON of mistakes on the way and damaged my voice at times in the process of learning the right way to sing (via the WRONG way!) - with that, I can save you damaging your voice through bad techniques
* I’m DOING it on a regular basis - performing is how I make my living so I am WALKING THE TALK OR TALKING THE WALK (whatever the phrase is)…
* I CARE about YOU and serving you the best I can….why should I care? It’s my Dharma (life goal/path) to sing (perform for people) and help others who are learning to sing and perform, to help anyone who wants to get better…with that, THANK YOU for watching!!!

I'm teaching singing since a month and I've got a young fellar who's really into hard rock, so now I'm also really curious about learning these things. I know CVT pretty well and the compression sound, sounds like the hold in curbing, but then the sound is much different! But is it the same feeling? Cause then I know from where to explore!

    @diederickbrandsma189@diederickbrandsma1895 ай бұрын
    • Hey I’m not sure what that term means, because it sounds very specific to CVT which I never got into. I just like to explain things as simply as possible. Einstein said ‘if you can’t explain something simply, you don’t understand it yourself’ 🤷🏼‍♂️

  • Thank you! So when I do compression I can't go past E4-F4# and it sounds like old man constipated. lol. I'm only 45.:) In songs I usually sing lighter but when a line comes up to hit F4#/G4, I go into this compressed sound but it sounds ridiculously squeezed and unnatural, plus hard to articulate clearly that high. Is it supposed to get easier the more I practice and also able to go higher?

  • I hear all the bass potential you have in your speaking voice and I think that is key to sounding good too, I can barely have any low end anywhere in my voice, is there a way to add that or am i just stuck sounding like a kid at even though I'm 30? Like even my low notes around A2 are mostly made of fry.

    @revuutube@revuutube Жыл бұрын
    • Hi, and thank you for the comment/question! The grass is always greener! My voice was even higher before getting Covid in Dec 2019 (for some reason it's going deeper - perhaps age related also) If you listen to Sebastian Bach he has an extraordinarily high speaking voice. I believe the way to get good at lower register is to keep working on your support to generate enough 'pressure' for your cords to vibrate well enough when loose and "low"

      @RockYourBestVocals@RockYourBestVocals Жыл бұрын
  • Great explanation of compression! My understanding about open throat technique is that it’s all bout how you form and modify vowels with your tongue and soft palate though. You would still use proper support and compression with that technique I believe🤘☺️

    @CadaverClub@CadaverClub Жыл бұрын
    • Indeed, support is key in any instance - it's the foundation which is why everyone likes to say 'just sing from your diaphragm' (like it's just that easy - haha!)

  • Few questions from a fellow voice teacher !! 1. What should this feel like ?? Pain wise lol. I think I just have the gain the muscles , but my voice does get tired pretty quickly from doing this . 2. Does this apply to holding a clean note and then adding compression later on in the note ?? Because if I'm not starting a note with a harsh glottal , how do I get the compression to start up in the middle of the phrase/note ?? 3. I usually "grunt" (like a Christina Aguilera type growl) . Is this similar in any way , or not even anywhere near it ?? 4. I feel like this is sort of like valsalva and I know that not to be great for the voice , causing too much subglottic pressure . What is the difference between this technique and valsalva ?? Sorry to bombard you with so many questions , I'm genuinely trying to learn for myself and so I can teach my students LOL. Great explanations , thank you !!!!

    @EmiPellegrinoMusic@EmiPellegrinoMusic10 ай бұрын
    • Hi Emi, I'll do my best to answer you 1. Pain is always bad in my opinion.. As far as tiring, if you've never done any pushups you would get tired very quickly too, yes? I think maybe it's just persistent work to develop the muscles and muscle memory. 2. Compression is the product of expulsion pressure of air against the holding back of air... think of a balloon in your hands if you hold the balloon with the 'opening' at the top and push up on the bottom the air will come out (unless you hold the 'nozzle' closed). Hope that makes sense! 3. As for the Christina growl, without seeing/hearing how you accomplish that I wouldn't know. I'm sure you can appreciate that can be done in different ways and also I'm sure you can appreciate that it's hard (almost impossible) to understand and answer some things with mere words... 4. I've never heard of 'valsalva' so I'm not sure (I am not trained in the 'academics' - I just share what has worked for me to get my clients' results). I do understand 'too much' subglottic pressure can be 'bad', but how much is 'too much'? I always do my best to release the pressure 'just enough' for a balance. If you want to book a free 15min zoom consultation (via my website) I can address point 3 better, otherwise I hope I've helped you! All the best, Jim

  • hmm, I studied for years with a great opera singer who also sings rock. He always said fill the room with air. We need a lot of air. Unfortunately, I always get tired when I sing higher songs. Even on lower songs. Maybe that's my problem. I'll try it. Thank you!

    @rockinvegan1765@rockinvegan1765 Жыл бұрын
    • I'd be interested in the opera singer that said that because I've recently gotten into learning more about opera singers and from what I've heard so far - they all talk about using as little air as possible to create a sound... In fact, there is a classical technique called "inalare" which you have the feeling of 'inhaling' the note (although not inhaling, you are releasing only a slight amount of air).... something to think about!

      @RockYourBestVocals@RockYourBestVocals Жыл бұрын

  • The part that I cannot figure out is the transition from the croaky super compressed quiet sounds into using that for loud and powerful vocal parts. Also, when I try this I quickly feel like I need to cough- what am I doing incorrectly? I can make the sound at the end just fine but I have no idea how to transition from that to what it’s actually supposed to sound like when singing.

    @eyezik5743@eyezik5743 Жыл бұрын
    • Hi! if you feel the need to cough, it's likely because you are pushing too much air through your vocal cords and irritating them. (that will cause damage over long periods of time, so if you feel that, stop!) Try holding back your air, and maybe consider 1:1 sessions with me to improve where I can show you things to do to achieve this.

      @RockYourBestVocals@RockYourBestVocals Жыл бұрын
    • @@RockYourBestVocals Thank you so much for the fast reply! After some trial and error I found if I focus more on the core I naturally constrict the air more and stop that problem. • Are you holding back air with your abdominal muscles or with your false folds? Or is it a little of both?

    @jmerdsoy@jmerdsoy2 жыл бұрын
    • Hi Justin, holding back the air is just by not trying to push air out - it's challenging to explain in text, but as an exercise, you could try singing in front of a match or lighter and trying not to blow it out (caution: try that at your own risk!) Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment!!! 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼

    • An easy way to do it is to pretend you're pooping. You will notice a closing sensation in your throat. Those are your false folds closing. Now do the same movement but don't close fully and produce a sound while doing so. It should be compressed now. If you add more volume, your false fold distortion will kick in.

    • You can always come back to it and try later... sometimes after a little bit of messing around, you will find it... that's how I did it - just by messing around (although without someone specifically showing me, took me ages to figure out!)

    • Scratchy or irritated throat means your true cords are being used, and feeling irritated as a result. This must be avoided to prevent damage.

    @LPUchihaGirl@LPUchihaGirl Жыл бұрын
    • Awesome that you're trying and getting it! As for your neck, as long as 'funny' doesn't hurt then I'm sure it's fine... it may feel different than you are used to and I'm sure that's fine as long as it doesn't HURT (pain is the enemy!)

  • Is compression same as edge vocal technique?

    @souminsky2997@souminsky29975 ай бұрын
    • Hey I guess you’re referring to CVT method? I don’t know what edge is, but compression is simply using your abdominal and related expulsion muscles to create upward pressure while restricting airflow similar to yelling underwater while trying to make zero bubbles… make sense?

    • I get that totally, because I've been there too... try thinking of starting it off with a loud forceful laugh and focus on the lower abs doing the work... and once you start off the note, just keep pushing from the lower abdominal and see if that works for you. There are several other things that I could suggest because different things work for different people.... but too much to list here

      @RockYourBestVocals@RockYourBestVocals Жыл бұрын
    • Well, I can hold the same note for the same length at the end of the video, clean and loud, so I guess I am compressing at some basic level. But when it comes to adding grit, "pushing more from the abdomen" etc, that doesn't seem to come together.

      @googleruinedyoutube4707@googleruinedyoutube4707 Жыл бұрын
  • Open throat technique has nothing to do with pushing more air. It has to do with the resonant quality of the voice and not allowing the soft palate to drop too low to where you choke off your consonants. Open throat technique is a must for proper singing, and also must be paired with vocal compression (referring simply to the holding back of air) just like anything else we do.

    • It shouldn't hurt, no... you may feel a 'pressure' but it may be that you are closing off, causing tension and too much pressure in the throat. I have a new course coming soon that explains this in a simpler way that will help you. Stay tuned/subscribed to see that - or sign up to my email on the website to be updated on when it comes out
