I was recently shooting great horned owls in the late evening and decided to let the ISO ride as high as I needed it to go. I really wanted to try out the new lightroom AI Denoise and i was extremly surprised at how much I was able to clean up the pretty noisy images. Here are the results.

The new lightroom AI denoise did a fantastic job in cleaning up these images which went up to 20,000 ISO. What would have been previously unusable images are now not just usable but actually fantastic.

On the ISO 20000 one, the tree looks spooky from the denoising. The others look just fine! Also trying to decide if I should give myself a super zoom for Christmas, and which, and if 2nd hand. You seem to do well with the Tamron, but I have a feeling it's hit or miss if you buy 2nd hand - harder to claim warranty if autofocus goes wonky. Looking forward to more of these videos!

- Thank you so much!!! Yes when you do look at it close enough.. that AI kind of falls off the subject. Tamron has been good to me so far.. luckily and I'm also hoping Santa could bring me a z8 and 400 2.8 and I'll never ask for Camera gear again 🤣 Cheers and Merry Christmas!!

Really enjoyed this! Later comment here. Owls are just so cool. Loved the video early on, @0:53, as the Owl was ruffling his feathers and spreading out his wings. That was cool. That ‘Tammy’ was hooking up on the D500. Really good photos. I think they cleaned up rather nicely. The D500 was/is a stellar camera. The white balance and exposure I prefer to my Z7 at times! I always wanted a D500. Stunning photographs and video. People seem terrified of using high iso, but it’s high iso or no photographs.

- Exactly like you said. You gotta ve asked to take some risks. I was the same for a while and would use auto iso in wildlife situations but set a max limit of about 2000. And that sometimes is not enough. Thanks for watching

- During Christmas KEH camera had a special 20% so I got the EX+ rated version. It came out to less than what people are selling on eBay. Mine came and is pristine.

- Its incredible. I would shoot my auto iso to max out at 3200 and very rarely 6400 but this opens up a whole new ball game. Thanks for watching

Lovely video! You just demonstrated how capable D500 is, handling High ISO situations. I think best setting would be (auto ISO max 6400) in low direct/indirect sunlight and auto ISO max (12000) in darker situations. This helps in keeping the shutter speed more than 1/500th.

Thanks for sharing this video. I also shoot with the Nikon D500 and wouldn’t shoot higher than ISO 4,000 in very low light or if a heavy crop would be required. I’ve always used Topaz DeNoise for denoising my images but the Adobe Ai DeNoise looks like it does a great job. I don’t use Lightroom but do use Adobe Camera RAW so I’m guessing the DeNoise / Enhance feature will be the same.

- Thanks so much for watching. I had never tried Topaz denoise but j had also heard it was really good. I did use the trial version though but not to this extent. I think the Adobe camera raw might have the same AI

- @@forced_perspective I've heard different stories about the results. Some prefer Topaz and some prefer the Adobe version. I never tried Topaz when my ISO was as high as 16,000 because I didn't think it would be able to handle it but after seeing your images on your video, I will be giving both versions of the software a go at higher ISOs.

Amazing images. I also shoot with a D500 and Tamron 150-600 G2. How do you find this setup? A lot of criticism from the Nikon 200-500 users.

- Thanks so much. I love the setup but get alot of flak saying that if focuses faster than the 200-500 😀 but I honestly think it does!! Hope you are enjoying it too

- @@forced_perspective to be honest I could have got the 200-500 for cheaper. But I do larger wildlife photography too, so the shorter end of the zoom appealed to me. 225mm as opposed to 300mm on the crop sensor, for elephants etc. And the weather sealing of course.

- Hey Ron I used the D500 for those images. I would have liked to use the z6 but it just doesn't work for me with birds in flight especially in such low light
