Your as old as you feel so I might be 48 but I feel 20 on the snow.

I started snowboarding at 23 years old. Started heli-boarding in my 50's. I'm 58 and have no plans on slowing down at all. Keeps me feeling young!

At 71, I feel extremely lucky to still be riding, albeit more conservatively. Switched from skiing to snowboarding in my mid-40’s, when my two sons took up riding. I remember fondly the days when I used to wait for them at the bottom of a trail. Now it’s reversed. It’s called the web of life.

Here’s some unsolicited advice for you youngsters from an older snowboarder. I’m 72. I spent the first winter of retirement in Aspen and rode 78 days. I beat my self up for a month. I finally came to grips with the fact that I am an olde man in spite of my condition relative to most of my friends and most 72 year olds. I slowed way down. I don’t leave the ground. I learned how to ride like an old man and enjoy it. However, at this age, bones aren’t what they used to be. Post season, a minor discomfort in my foot, developed into a heel spur and bursitis. I had arthroscopic surgery a few months ago. I’m maybe 80% back and intend to ride but am not sure if I’m able. This could have been avoided if I was not pounding my skeleton for 3 months with very little down time. If I get 10 good days this season, I’ll consider myself lucky. I’ve kept my bright yellow, hospital bracelet that says “FALL RISK” to remind myself to act my age. PS I walked up the bowl at Highland behind an 82 year old who wasn’t even winded

At 51, identify as a sophmore. Tried snowboarding first time last season and love it. Great to be back in snow after a 20 something year break. Had a blast. About to head off for three weeks skiing this in Jan.

Oh children, please - I was several years older when I had my first ski lesson. Once the slide-on-the-snow bug bites, though, it doesn't matter how old you are, it won't let go, so you just have to keep doing it. 😁

Although I did three unpleasant days in 1990, I returned to the mountains for the first time in January this year aged 47, so I counted myself as a newbie. Over the season I broke my coccyx, popped three ribs, lost a lot of skin, sprained my ankle and wrist… and I have loved every minute of it! I have been completely bitten by the bug and try to get to the indoor snow slope a few times a month to get better for next season. It has become the screensaver to my mind and great for mental and physical health. I intend to keep going as long as I possibly can.

If I can offer a tip from one "old guy" to another (I'm 42), when you get off the lift or gondola and have your front foot strapped in, use your heel edge to "kick in" a ledge that you can then use to strap your back foot in whilst standing up. This will save you a whole heap of energy since you won't have to stand up from sitting down each time you begin a run. Hope this helps....I was an instructor for the better part of 15 years for what it's worth.

Good tip, me being 46 don't sit down to strap in- no need for any step on bindings ;) Another tip- get a proper snowboard instructor who'd show you how to use edges of your board. What you do is back-foot steering, so you're just sliding, which is fine in some situations. But on slopes like this it's a must to carve and not to slide ;) Don't get me wrong, it's great you're having fun but you won't regret it. It would take the fun to a totally another level. Keep the stoke alive!
