My understanding is that Trump did not need to direct him to cover it up, it's that Trump was involved in the covering up. He knew, he signed, he didn't stop it, it's his company.

It was curious why they had the wh*re in question on the stand for days. The act itself seems irrelevant, it was the accounting practices that paid said wh*re where the alleged crime took place. It is like someone on trial for stealing, and they put the stockboy on the stand for days describing how he put the items on the shelves. But it exhausted Trump and kept him from campaigning, humiliated Melania, and kept the salacious details of the affair in the press. So I guess it worked.
The cover up isn't even illegal. This whole case is based on whether it was a campaign expense or a personal expense, and even if they somehow convince the jury that Trump was only doing it for his campaign it's just a misdemeanor. The whole trial is a political stunt and honestly embarrassing.

Often jurors fall victim to legal bs and don't trust their gut. I am very pessimistic at this point. I thought they would have something to show Trump knew about the legality of the payments. I'm surprised now this even went to trial. Trump will win this and it will help his cause.
yes, everything does need to be explained, that the prosecution and defense want understood. all evidence given in court, and only evidence given in court, can be considered by the jury.

Trump didn't blackmail anyone. Trump repaid Michael Cohen for Stormy Daniels hush money, and covered it up as "legal fees." Also, the intent to pay hush money for a celebrity is fine. Not fine for a presidential candidate - that's election interference. Blackmail is not part of the indictment.

It was paid in several installments, but for all we know, she just recorded it as "Hush money" - not illegal. It wasn't illegal to pay it either, but that's not what the case is about.
