Baby Dumbo Octopus
This sea creature lives in the deepest, darkest parts of the ocean. It’s called the “dumbo octopus” because of its lateral fins that look like Dumbo’s big ears! It steers itself around by flapping its fins and using its webbed arms. This octopus doesn’t squirt ink, because where it lives is so dark that it doesn’t need to! It’s found at depths of 400-4,800 meters below the ocean surface which is why it’s very rarely observed so there’s been little research on it.
Although they are believed to be found worldwide, they have only been observed around New Zealand, Australia, California, the Philippines, and New Guinea so far. Scientists get really excited whenever they spot one and you can imagine their delight when they spot a baby dumbo octopus. It’s so cute!
Baby Pangolin
We’ve seen the cute images of pangolins looking like they’re nervously about to ask you to prom, but have you seen a baby pangolin? They’re even more adorable and are called pangopups! They’re often called scaly anteaters which is a good description, but they’re not closely related to anteaters. When threatened they roll into a ball and the scales on their body protect them from any attacker.
They can be found across Asia and sub-Saharan Africa in sandy areas of woodlands and savannas. Their homes, underground burrows, are usually near water sources. They haven’t been studied very extensively so we don’t know much about their habits except that they’re nocturnal animals. But we do know for sure that their babies are pretty cute!
