  • This is one of the few Floyd numbers that David Gilmour wrote entirely himself. And it's fantastic. I love this kind of dreamy, psychedelic folk-rock. It reminds me a bit of the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane, with a bit of Black Sabbath thrown in.

  • Ummagumma is a brilliant LP and really cemented PF into the pantheon of great bands, though they still weren't largely experienced until Meddle. I made a point to see them live in concert in '71 because of the live recordings on Ummagumma and was blown away. I saw them again in '72 (the meddle and DSOTM concerts) and to this day, they are the two best concerts I ever saw ... nothing else was even close. Extraordinary musicianship and a true emotional involvement with the work. Very little mention is made of their 4 channel live PA, which added to the entire experience.

  • I was 14 as i bought The Wall. A few weeks later i looked through my uncles record collection and found Ummagumma. Fascinated by the cover art i asked him if he would lend me the record for a week so i have time to record a cassette tape. He looked an just said:"Ah that shit? Oh,you can have it. I don't listen to it anyway." As i listened for the first time ,the live record surprised me how awesome Floyd was in th early days. Then the studio record completely blew my young mind. I was like "ah, now i understand THAT'S Psychedelic Rock(without any knowledge about what Psychedelic really means)

    • I had very similar experience. When I was 14, I got the Wall on DVD. I have an older sister who got the record in 1980 and I had been borrowing it, until she finally asked for it back (mid 1980's). So anyway she had a copy of A Saucer Full Of Secrets. I loved the cover on it. I asked to borrow it. I didn't like it at first. But then I fell in love with in. I still have that record.

  • When you listen to these really early Floyd gems, The Wall seems almost lame by comparison. THIS is the Floyd I grew up with! Ummagumma and Meddle were really something special. Gilmour's vocals are absolute perfection. 1967 to 1977 is the best 10 year period in the history of rock music. So glad I lived through it...

  • The Narrow Way...a song about transformation, Birth! the Narrow Way. The struggle to survive any hardship, with narrow space to navigate through. A meditation on death & rebirth. Not unlike many of Davids songs on transmutation, Childhoods End, This song typifies the strength he brought to the Floyd table.

  • PINK FLOYD, had three different eras .And the music dramatically changed. But still all of it was original. telling true stories that still apply today .They sincerely played from the heart.Pink Floyds music was all extremely emotional. they were so brilliant throughout all of their history. they never gave in to the man, if you know what I mean. They never sold their souls!! They remain pure, and extremely talented !! Yes, they did break up. And as most breakups are, it was horrible.. But in the end Rodger Waters, and David Gilmour, both had some very successful albums after The Break-Up.... They were all extremely creative. And each one of them played a vital role in Pink Floyd!! Syd Barrett, Roger Waters, Nick Mason, Rick Wright, and David Gilmour, God bless you all !!

Edit: A “friend, or acquaintance of a friend” stole half of Ummagumma from my large CD case. Of course it’s The half with THIS SONG. I hope that they feel a similar emptiness one day when they are looking for one of their favorite music products. Sorry, had to blow off some very old steam. I lost this CD 💿 before my life destroying Car Accident (not my fault- rear ended by two cars 🚗 going 40...) and it reminds me of wonderful days of my life before a over a decade long health hell. I long for those stolen days and years... this song really captures a beautiful place in time. Blessings.

My dad used to have a pirate cassette of it when I was a kid, years before even marrying my mother and getting divorced afterwards. Great days without knowing that he was a cheater and coke head. All my parents' tapes were gifted unfortunately; my decision to keep them didn't count.

    • To me it was the Gilmor/Waters collaboration that made them great. The lyrics from waters on Dark Side and The Wall were great, but the music written by Gilmor for those lyrics and songs like Wish you were Here highlight how great the pair were. Listen to Brick in the Wall pt2, or Comfortably Numb live since they went separate ways, neither one sounds as good as when they sing it together. Waters lower range and trance like voice followed or layered with Gilmores melancholic higher voice (That sounds very British compared to Waters) is where the magic was imo. Wish you were here is the only one Gilmore can sing with out Waters and it still sounds alright, but i still prefer the pair together.

  • I used to play this track quite a bit in the 70s / 80s, to be honest most of the studio album kinda freaked me out (still does)then again it was pretty experimental and I recall both Gilmour and Waters saying that they cannot listen to it. ....Following the path as it leads towards the Darkness in the North Weary strangers faces show their sympathy They've seen that hope before.... - the sense of foreboding is embedded in the lyrics as much as the unusual chord changes on this track Thanks for the upload and vid - an interesting synergy.

  • Let me tell you something: I play LOTR rpg with a group of friends. It was almost the same time when I started playing and discovering the experimental era of Pink Floyd, and this in my teenager years. My mind was (and still doing) very creative and imaginative and Ummagumma became an excelent ambient album to me by relate to all the adventures in Middle Earth. So I can tell you what I picture with The Narrow Way: Part 1: takes part in a warmy sunny midday, in a path in a forest. The group of adventurers are composed by elves, dwarves, humans and hobbits. They're walking, exploring, talking and planing the journey. The group is fine and happy. Part 2: they see at the distance a group of orcs and they are stunned, but rapidly they take their weapons and fight them. It took so much time the battle, they end very wounded and tired. Part 3: The sun goes down and the night begins, with much difficulty and despondent they see light from a village, they are welcome and the villagers help them with a smile and good disposition, They have a treatment for their wounds, a plate of food and a good rest. "Following the path as it leads towards The darkness in the North Weary strangers' faces show their sympathy They've seen that hope before" It's a very beautiful picture from my head and my inspirations that I couldn't keep for myself, I needed to share with you! I love how Pink Floyd can create beautiful worlds and scenarios.

  • É uma musica sombria, mas eu gosto dela nesse disco. Afinal, eles estavam fazendo somente experimentalismos nesse ummagumma. O video ficou show!

    • I'd like your take on "Alans' psychedelic Breakfast","Bike" or maybe,"The Gnome".I love the pre-Dark SideOf the Moon" the best!😧R.I.P. Syd&Richard. Both highly under rated!Where would the Floyd be W/O their influences?Would they put out the same level of.,.Experimentations we now come to cherish?Richards also the ONLY one of the Floyd who went to school perticularly for music. To bad Roger with his narscisim had to jettison (in my humble opinion)his less than Stellar post-PF.I love him but...How many times have I listened to Radio K.A.O.S.?My copy has about an inch of dust on it!It was a good tour but...He needed his past catalog to fill seats.Amazing what a couple micrograms of L.S.D.can accomplish.
