  • I have been to Belfast a number of times however my last visit was purely a family break for 5 days in 2018 and it was wonderful. The city is full of warm and welcoming people in every corner. A fascinating booking I made was to do the political tour. Our driver was an absolute diamond of a man and to hear his story and the story of the troubles and going into both loyalist and republican area's was something that made the hairs stand on end. He is one of the vast majority that want nothing but peace, he told me that loyalist and republican ex paramilitary drivers sit in the same rank, they talk to each other, they laugh with each other, they support each other. He eats his cooked breakfast every morning in a staunchly loyalist area and as a catholic he can do with no fear. The conflict was horrific with atrocities committed by both sides. It is not something to be glorified or accepted ever again. One last thing to say is that our drivers Mother in law and Brother in law were both killed in the conflict, but even after this his wife wants no more fighting and has forgiven. Now that is the true strength to admire in my view.

    • Phil Driver Sorry but we don’t need Westminster, Scotland is now a far different type of country compared to the rest of the United Kingdom, Were part of a democracy where we don’t really get a say on anything, every constituency in Scotland voted to remain in the European Union, we voted against Independence in 2014 with one of the unions strongest arguments being if we voted to leave the union we would lose our EU membership, Westminster has rained poverty down on Scotland, Universal Credit harms Scotland massively, we also saw west minister try to grab back powers devolved to Scotland, Scotland are better outside the Union, the union is not got long left it will end one day soon probably in my opinion, it would be soo good for all 4 countries to be independent but the closest of allies, the union doesn’t work anymore, Brexit shows all countries think differently, Independent Scotland, England and Wales with a united Ireland and being the closest of allies, thats what the future should be and will most likely be, another note Scotland’s population is small due to us not having the land mass that are habitable to live, we need immigration to fill jobs and make a contribution to our society, England are more against Immigration because yous have a large population, yous have land that is good enough for people to live, The union should end, we will all be better off on our own. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇨🇮🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

  • I think we need to stop the collective denial. The problems in Ireland are entirely of our own making. How would we respond to an occupation by an external force, annexation, massive population transfers in an effort to dilute the indigenous populations (as socio-political constructs matured this culminated in gerrymandering in the 1960s)? The economic favouritism was the one of the main cooperative causes of "The Troubles". The list of crimes that Britain committed in Ireland is difficult to outline even. We should apologise, starting with the BBC, and offer them a chance to choose their own path. The unionists can remain British nationals, and I think the Republic should offer them a path to citizenship as well, but I think NI should secede from the union. If it weren't for what is tantamount to gerrymandering the vote would overwhelming favour NI rejoining the republic. And I say this as an English person from the North East of England.

    @Screaming-Trees@Screaming-Trees6 жыл бұрын
    • Northern Ireland Unionists already have a right to Irish citizenship. Some have taken it up, obtaining Irish passports so as to be able to travel freely in the EU after Brexit. Under the Good Friday/Belfast agreement, neither the UK nor the Republic have any claim on NI. Its destiny is in the hands of the people who live there. Once the full impact of Brexit hits home and Nationalists become a majority there in the next decade, who knows what will happen. Irish Nationalism south of the border is capable of accommodating Ulster Unionists these days, but its up to them.

    • On my recent travels to NI before COVID and all the recent restrictions I noticed a lot of Army surplus shops in the towns I passed through in my travels. It appears that the British Army sell off their surplus and no longer required kit to commercial traders to do with what they will. I hope there are restrictions on Uniform buttons or the like or the way is wide open for impersonation and ruses for Criminal ends. As far as I know only a small and specialised trade in Police or Army uniforms is allowed in the Republic to theatrical and film production concerns and not to the general public. This is due to several attempts by Drug criminals and the like to organise assassinations dressed up as Police or Soldiers. Foreign uniforms, most notably from the former East German State, used to be sold here and were a fashion item for a while in the early 90's.

  • Having parents, Grand parents and friends on both sides of the divide I understand the real issues involved in the issue that the people of Both north and south of the border face. I must admit that I am sentimental to the views of the south, though I would not agree with the violence that they, and must me said from the north and British government, displayed in the height of the troubles. This complex issue the people find themselves in is deeply concerning given that the long term solution to it is embroiled in the wishes of both militants from the north and the south, not forgetting the British military might also. Being a Christian, I absolutely refute the use of God in any of the divisions on all sides. God is Love and sadly we see very little of that. I pray that time heals and that God intervenes not the Gun from all sides. Amen

    @benji.B-side@benji.B-side5 жыл бұрын
    • Trouble is that unless they actually do something substantially violent and illegal, something more than parades and expression of a particular viewpoint, you cause more trouble and more public support for such extreme views by attempting to suppress them with State sanctioned violence either by Police or Army. The effect is to legitimise an extreme or marginal viewpoint by making martyrs out of these people. Irish people are probably different to other countries in that a jail sentence or other State sanction can be seen as a badge of honour instead of being a stigma or source of shame as it would be in other less divided communities especially if the motive for an offence is political.

  • As an Irish person, I have to say that these extremists do not represent the majority of people in my country. The 1998 peace agreement guarantees that if the majority of people in Northern Ireland want a United Ireland, then it will happen. This agreement is Internationally recognised and legally binding. It has led to over 20 years of peace on the island, and now, due to changing demographics in the North, it is most likely that it will soon lead to a United Ireland. This means that this kind of militant Republicanism has no excuse to exist any more, as it has nothing left to achieve. This will be especially true after a United Ireland comes to fruition, but you can be guaranteed these particular inner city youths will still have an excuse of some form or another by then to continue their activities. I think the issue here is not a matter of National sovereignty, and more an issue of unemployed youths in this inner city area with nothing to do, with boredom leading them down the path of militarism. I think it’s fair to say that if these guys weren’t in a republican organisation they would likely be in a criminal gang, or a neo-nazi , fascist or Communist groups like comparable inner city youths in continental Europe

    • lone wolf im afraid that’s untrue, the Brexit deal allows Northern Ireland to become part of the rest of Ireland and the EU in a much more streamlined way due to a condition demanded by Enda Kenny to Michel Barnier for Northern Ireland to have similar mechanisms for unification as East Germany had, so no, the agreement has not been broken, but it was pushed to the limit for a period of time during negotiations. All that has been cleared up though

    • Ellie 26: Please define 'go back where they came from' . Do you mean these people specifically, or people should return to the place of their ancestors? If the former, I thought these people already were where they came from, they just have a strange perspective for the age we live in. If the latter, my ancestors come from so many different places I might just as well stay where I am. And if KZhead is to be believed, the Irish are going to have to move to Egypt. It was probably you lot who built the Pyramids anyway. Paddy and the bricks is a really old song.

    • @Straight White British Protestant Northern Ireland has a predominantly British population because the Scottish British Loyalist people invaded Ulster and took over by the use of vicious violent warfare murdering thousands of native Irish people and have been murdering native Irish people ever since. "The Glenanne Gang" were entirely serving RUC officers and serving UDR soldiers. They murdered 120 native Irish Catholic people with the full backing of the British State who are still actively covering up this and all the other murder gangs they backed. Remember John Stalker? A British police officer sent in to investigate the RUC no warning shoot to kill practice and the RUC with the help of other British police blackened Stalker's name and had the investigation closed down. And you finish your propaganda rant with the threat to send our "entire island.... up in flames". It's you people who are forcing people against their will to accept unjust foreign rule!
