Virtual Reality... That You Can Smell 🤔

Can you imagine watching your favorite cooking show and being able to smell the aromas? 😍
Well, a new bit of technology could make this possible - the Escents!
Power couple Anastasia and Ivan are the inventors behind the London-based startup Scentient, that is making immersive experiences more memorable and realistic. Their device 'Escents' uses a central tracking system to release smells, enhancing virtual and real life experiences. It can be used with a VR headset, smartphone or in actual reality and releases up to six different scents in one session.
Although the entertainment industry is in their sights, the couple have focused their attention on a more practical industry first: the emergency services. Their device can be used for training of the police force, firefighters and many more, improving the quality of training across the country.
Our team put this innovative new device to the test...

  • Fun fact: Smell-O-Vision was invented in 1960 for a movie called “Scent of a Mystery”. 30 odors were released by the device at specific times throughout the movie triggered by the soundtrack.

  • I can't believe this actually got developed into something I thought of making when I was around 13 years old: a device for TVs that would spray the smell depending on the composition of the scene and actual base chemicals available inside the device. But in my idea, those base chemicals would make every possible smell by just mixing in real time. Damn I could have become rich!

  • This could work great if the delivery method was different.... The way they are atomizing the oils to the open air around your face could result in your VR hardware breaking. All modern headsets have active cooling with fans and heat sinks, and all that atomized oil could impact the heat dissipation resulting in overheating or damage to internals... Maybe if they designed a face mask type enclosure it could minimize exposure to the headsets and reduce the amount of oils used in each session. 😅

  • I can remember going to a Saturday matinee as a 9 or 10 yr old in 1958-9-60 ?, something most kids did back then, to a smell-o-rama? and it was a travelogue on the Great Wall of China and they cut open an orange that you could smell then I remember in India there showed a funeral on the river, cremating a body on a floating sandalwood pyre and you could smell the burning sandalwood, to name a couple of aromas. I don’t know if they placed these aromas through the air conditioning system or the projectionist was using a bug spray pump, but the whole show was bogus.

  • They said they could only do 6 scents at one time right?!? That would actually be perfectly fine. Say they are working with game developers, they could just do game specific scent packs. Like an easy to use cartridge you plug in before you start playing. Then along with the game developers, they could have the scents activate where ever the game designers want. If they could figure out different combinations that work when mixed then the 6 initial scents would be like a base. Then have them mix to make other scents . If they do it right those 6 initial scents could become dozens of separate combinations. 🤔 That would be so cool!

  • The potential to become the likes of Sword Art Online (or just VR-MMORPG other than that), well there's still a dozen of technological leaps and miracles to go, this (even though that went way back in the 20th century) is still years and years away. Still interesting.
