Solo Camping in the Mountains with Brutal Rain and Winds | Hilleberg Nammatj 2 in Storm Conditions

They can't all be beautiful hikes in warm sunny weather. Join me on this challenging camp in the English Lake District. This ended up being some of the toughest weather I have had to contend with while hiking and camping in quite some time. The rains and winds were relentless but adjustments were made as the hike went on to find a safe place to hunker down in the tent for the night. If I had known the conditions were going to be this rough I probably would have postponed my trip. The last thing I want to do is glorify camping in potentially dangerous weather. Sometimes it’s best to just remember that these beautiful landscapes are not going anywhere and they will still be here if you just wait and camp on a different day. This is a lesson I still need to learn. I am definitely guilty of being a bit impatient when waiting for a dry day, as they don't always align with when I have the opportunity to camp. But if you do choose to camp in these conditions, bringing the right equipment is essential and being flexible with your plans is very important. Hope you enjoy the video.

  • When this guy says he's going to make some dinner I assumed he was going to pull out a freeze-dried ration and boil some water on his gas cylinder stove. You know, quick and easy. But no, he starts chopping fresh veggies and browning 1/2 pound of beef. But that's not all, he whacks out a Trangia alcohol burner in those gale-force winds, and then proceeds to lit it with a match, just to make himself a proper meal. That's my new definition of dedication. Never again will I complain about my camp food.

I had a moment while on this hike when I was actually thinking about ancient travelers of these lands making these journeys without the kind of equipment I use. • Pitching up with approximately £5K of camping equipment helps a person present a positive attitude. As does being paid for the ordeal. I subscribe to KZhead Premium so I don't see ads, but I wonder how many he had you sit through.

    • @@michaelc3977 😂 I only have the one Ad before the video starts because KZhead makes me. I dont care to make money off anyone who watches. This is just a hobby of mine and my family is the most important thing. That’s why I usually only make one video a month, I don’t include affiliated links, I don’t ask anyone to buy me a coffee 😂, and I don’t have any of those super chats or whatever turned on. I do this because I love it. I drive an old car and I probably will until the wheels fall off, I still wear clothing I’ve had for 15 years, I don’t waste money on nonsense other than travel with my family and camping gear 😅 (because I have an addiction to gear) and it’s what I love to do. Really appreciate you watching but no need to sound so jaded and imply that my videos are here just to make money or that I’m happy or only positive because I know how to save money and buy an good gear 👍

  • Tenacity backed up with a positive mental attitude in spades. Knowing that you have top class kit with you certainly helps you psychologically when you encounter perilous conditions like you experienced in the wettest area of the UK . Sone good tips in the vid and the importance of having tertiary back up with the Garmin In Reach. It has definitely prompted me to make a purchase including an emergency bothy shelter when I'm up on the high fells with my small group of fellow hikers. Just another great video,highlighting the Lake District in its characteristic weather patterns which can turn nasty and dangerous in the blink of an eye. I spent a few months in 2017-2018 motorcycle camping, so all of my stuff is small and light to fit on the bike. tho the tent is a nice brand new upgrade from my crappy lil coleman sundome. this will be her maiden voyage. • I suspect all of us who have a few years under our backpacks have experienced extreme conditions similar to what you dealt with. I know I have on a number of occasions. Your skills and intestinal fortitude really came through on this trip and I'm very happy you stuck with the recording of it. In fact, I learned a few things from you on this trip (never too old to learn, right?) that will really help on my next foray into the backcountry here in Canada. You mentioned about the video quality not being the best - actually considering the conditions I thought it was outstanding. Certainly the commentary and continuity of it were superb. Thanks so much for doing this. This brought back some really fun (though maybe less so at the time) memories. All the best!

    • It’s a fantastic tent! I may have made a typo in the video if I said it was the guy tensioners. It wasn’t the guy tensioners it was the fly tensioners at the base of the vestibule that were slipping. This has never happed to me before but it definitely wasn’t ideal. I was able to stop the slipping with a single overhand knot in the ribbon material but it was a bit annoying. It may have been because it was so saturated by the rain. Not sure. Really appreciate the comment Chris. ATB

    • Yes it makes you really appreciate diving straight into bed when you get home. There’s no better feeling. I’ve camped out for weeks on end with similar weather. When you know you’ve got everything well prepared and the tent is strong enough to withstand almost any weather, it makes you feel so cosy and relaxed when you’re in it. I go to sleep every night with the sound of rain on KZhead, but the real thing is soo much better. Especially rain drops on a tent!

  • Question - your meals all look delicious. But why don’t you do the prep (cutting spring onions, slicing garlic, etc ) at home, before you set out? It would save some time (and waste) once you start to cook?

    @winwithoutpitching001@winwithoutpitching001Ай бұрын
    • That’s a great question. Typically I bag all my ingredients a day or two before a camp. The morning of the camp I take it out of the fridge drop my kids off at school and have typically a 4.5hr drive then a few hours to hike. Most of the time if I were to cut certain ingredients ahead of time and bag them, they either loose their moisture or get slimy and mushy. And sometimes my plans also change completely and all the ingredients can remain fresher for a few days longer until I can actually get out for the camp because they are uncut. I want to have a fresh meal like I would make it at home while I’m out so I don’t mind the chopping at camp. I enjoy the entire cooking experience 👍. Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. ATB

I had a peg come out when I camped in the windy Cairngorms in December and my Soulo moved about 6’’ while I was readjusting the guy lines. It shows how important it is for the Soulo to have evenly tensioned guy lines.
