Here is a start to finish video of a small log cabin I built in Northern Canada. I used the Butt and Pass method, chinked with moss and put a moss covered roof on it. I hope you enjoy the video.

This is the best one I’ve seen all year long. He actually cleans up after himself as a builder so he doesn’t have to live like a pig in the wilderness. Great job.
Wow, thanks!

You can find another person building a log cabin by searching youtube for outsider1. The Canadian has a multi year series of building a log cabin on a budget. ( I have a public playlist of his series )
Yeap, it's really great, how you hear that screw-stripping sound, literally every time the drill is employed! That's HOW YOU KNOW you built a good house -- you stripped every screw while building it! Brilliant!
Lots of hard work my man! God bless! Enjoy the cabin!
Thanks! Will do!
Excellent! I've watched all 6 previous episodes; subscribed on #2 and yet this beginning to end video is wonderful. Great work & stay safe!
Thank you very much!
Amazing what a beautiful Tina log cabin it looks like something out of a fairy tales just love it great craftsmanship ❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you so much!
@@backwoodssolitude you’re very welcome ✌🏼
The scenery is so peaceful...it's so beautiful and meticulously researched...it's truly a masterpiece of nature!!!❤❤❤
Thank you!
Yeah, the stripping of screws while drilling is a wonderful sound, it almost makes me want to rip out my ears.
@@HoldOffHunger You did a great job.. I also want to have a house like that
Damn good job. Beautiful cabin.
Thank you!
Love watching this guy. Super beneficial knowledge. Making a small cabin has been something I have wanted to do for a while now. I'm not going quite that primordial. I would have solar and gas generated power. It's on a farm that is in the middle of gods country. Plenty of old growth woods, ferns, and a creek. Plus it's my families land too. Working out everything in my head and plan on giving it a go cause I'm tired of this shit.
Thanks you. With a location like that I'd be cutting and peeling the trees first thing in the spring if I was you. Good luck with the build!
Super cozy. Thanks for sharing.
You are so welcome!
Nice cozy cabin build. Good work!
Thanks!
Outstanding Craftsman ship! Pete 👌!

Very glad you enjoyed it!
well done!!

Congratulations on your amazing accomplishment!! It was a joy to watch your build :)

One canuck to another, what a nice little cabin, i like the finishing touch with the mossy roof, i was surprised when you did that, it looks really nice. Ric, ontario canada.
Thank you. And I agree, the roof really brings it together.
This guy was fantastic.
Thank you!
Excellent work. Enjoy your new cabin. Cheers.
Thanks, will do!

Beautiful forest
I agree. Thank you for the comment
My friend did it beautifully and very well.. the forest is also very beautiful
Thank you. I'm loving the forest back there. There was a fire that went through the area a few years ago but it still looks nice.
You ladies Rock🎉 This video is Packed full of super important information Cheers 🎉
Thank you for the comment!
Your cabin is truly amazing well done i have always wonted to live in one but they dont build them in ENGLAND so much 🤗
Thank you! Living in one would be nice, maybe one day.
There you'd build it out of stone and it would still be there in a hundred years haha.
Buy you some land with plenty of trees and start building it. You will love every minute of it and when you finish it, stand back and look at it with joy in your heart. I always wanted a cabin in the woods but it is to late for me now as I am 77. Please don’t wait until it is to late.

I would do it this way I think. Nice work brother
Thank you. Ya this is a pretty easy and quick way of doing it. Traditional scribe method would be a fun build but would go a little slower.
As usual another excellent video Merry Christmas to you both Cheers
Same to you! Thank you
Molto carina , bel lavoro .complimenti
Grazie e grazie per il commento.
nice video
Thanks for the visit
A very nice cabin, it’s so peaceful there. Is the inside done or will you do another video 🌸
Thank you, the inside is not done, I'll do more videos, thanks for commenting.

east of Toronto here, and that's pretty much my dream. In Ontario, there's a slight issue with jacked prices for land, and if you could purchase, to build cabins, you'd have to be in an unorganized township (avoid permits/inspections). Working on it... but it looks like I'd have to win the lottery first. Great job! Just subscribed.
Ya, currently prices are a little out of control but hopefully it gets better soon. Unorganized township is the key to get around that stuff and it'll likely be cheaper land as well. Thanks for watching
Good job
Thanks
Molto bravo 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🥰
Thank you!
Bom trabalho, lindo mesmo
Obrigado pelo comentário gentil
Bravo! Loved watching the series. How long did this build take from cutting first log to completion? Thanks for sharing your experience.
From first log to what's completed in the video took about 6 months. But there's a lot of drying time in there as well as short work days.
😍👍😀great
Thank you! Cheers!
Did you have to buy land to build that house. And that is a Awesome log cabin for you doing it all yourself good job dude.
There are some circumstances that allow you to build a cabin on crown land but for the vast majority it would need to be on private property. Thank you for the comment.
Curious question: why did you not put a vapor barrier under the cabin floor to minimize moisture coming up through to the cabin & floor? Was there a reason? Would like to know.
It's kind of a long story. Very briefly, it was, at might still be, just a shed to keep tools in while I build a proper cabin, health issues got in the way so now I'm using it as a cabin while I dial in medications. Thank you for watching and commenting.
Excelente... um multitool kit!!
Obrigado pelo comentário.
Wait! Did you not get the memo? I think you have to have a dog - it's some sort of law or something :XD Such a lot of hard work by yourself, so impressive! I really enjoyed the whole film, thank you:)
Lol ya, there're dogs in nearly all these types of videos. Maybe one day I'll get one. Thank you for the kind comments
What species of tree are those than peel so easily? Does the season or time of year have any bearing on the peeling of the bark? I am intrigued and very curious.
They're pine trees. Peeling them when the sap is running works best, April -June. Thanks for watching
Where in northern Canada ?? I also subscribe to your videos. Love, love them! ❤ I am 80 years young and I would love to live in a cabin year long! So peaceful ❤
Tetap semangat kawan. Salam hangat dari Indonesia
Halo Indonesia! Terima kasih atas kata-kata baiknya.
so wonderful. everything is so beautiful❤
Thank you!
I love it. I would pay you to build me one a little bigger with a wood burning stove.
Thank you! Ya I've had a few offers now. I'm doing a deer stand this summer for a friend.
Show us some honest pictures after the 1st winter I wanna see how good the roof held up I'm sure it's gonna cave in
Ok will do
I love your living roof! Has it held up well? ❤
It has. It's still green and thriving. I didn't expect it to do so well
Great job, I love it!!!! Probably a stupid question but, why do you put moss on the roof and between the logs. Won't that cause bugs to get inside ur cabin?? Tyfs God bless
Moss on the roof protects tarp from sun, dampens sound for things like rain, provides some insulation, provides camouflage from overhead and looks nice. Between the logs is for insulation. I guess some small bugs may live in it but it helps prevent larger ones from coming in and stops mosquitoes. Thank you for the comment
@backwoodssolitude ah ok. Makes sense. It does look nice. You're welcome
❤❤🎉
Thank you
Cool and unique cabin, roughly how many pine trees did you have to use?
Somewhere around 90
Nice video but you are going to have a lot of room mates come winter time.
Lol hopefully not
Looks awesome just wondering how long it took you. Music needs to go lol😂.
It took 5 or 6 months, but lots of drying time is on there. Thanks for the tip on the music, I was up in the air on that lol.
Hey man, great stuff question for you. What trees did you harvest for these logs and what is the dimensions of those logs 6 inch or 8 inch?
Pine. The diameter ranges from 4" to 8". But you're correct, the vast majority would be around 6"
How long did it actually take to build it. It’s beautiful
About 6 months if I remember correctly. Some of that time was waiting for them to dry out though.
Awesome build! What are the dimensions of the cabin?
Thank you. 8' x 8' not Including the front porch.
Hej Danmark! Tak for den venlige kommentar.
How moist can the wood be when processing?
I'm not sure of a percentage but I find that logs with a diameter of 5 or 6 inches need at least 2 months of drying time whereas 8 or 10 inch logs need a full year.
What type of tree is that that you’re peeling and using for the walls?
Pine trees, they're super easy to peel in April, May and June.
44:34 Will the weight of the dirt roof make it collapse or sag through the ceiling rafters?
Good call. I think it would at least sag so I installed some crossers. I did record that as well but it didn't take long so I might just add it into a future video. Thanks for watching.
What are you using for the log treatment ?
A semi-transparent exterior wood stain.
👍
Thanks
Thanks
nezaman vernikledin göstermedin ama çok güzel oldu
Tesekkurler. Vernikleme icin 41:25'ten itibaren izleyebilirsin.

Osnt that the kind of caterpillar u can tell the winter severity from its bands?
Lol I've heard that about them. Yellow wooly bear.
Purchased logs? Very uniform.
No, cut and carried by hand. But ya most were super uniformed, made things easier. I might purchase some cedars for an upcoming build though, I think they'll be about $15/log.
Is the land your own, will you use the cabin for fun or living off grid ? Take care, stay safe 🌸
Friends land, fun as its pretty remote, thank you, safety first!
One question I have when I see these people building out in the wilderness, is where are they going to get water
For myself, there's a small stream close to the cabin. Some people use rain catches, some dig wells and some hard cores just carry the water in.
Is that ok you make lock outside? 😮
Ya that's fine. If anyone stumbles on that cabin they're likely very lost and will need in. Thanks for the comment.
Did not like the moss on the roof otherwise excellent work!
That's my favorite part! Thank you for the comment.
You really need extra beams or crossbars between main beams or the roofs gonna collapse with snow reality check otherwise nice job
Thank you for the suggestion and comment.
Never trust a fuzzy caterpillar!
Correct lol. Thanks for the comment/advice.
All you need now is a hand-made rocking chair for the front porch.
There's an idea. It won't be the nicest looking rocking chair but I sure I can get it to rock a bit. Thanks for commenting
How do you clean the mold off the logs
Sanding them took most of it off, but I wasn't able to find a great way to do it beside that. Staining will prevent it from spreading any further but I'll be focusing on trying to avoid it from starting in the first place. Thanks for the comment.
@@backwoodssolitude you could mist it with bleach water
Er,...is it just me, but that roof won't survive the first snow fall? There's no boarding?
I think I'll loose a couple small chunks but the majority should be fine as it's held up with a rope. Thank you for the comment.
so is the inside of the cabin 8x8?
Yes. Not much room but easy to heat.
00:41 TIMBER!
Lol ya, timber times about 80. Thanks for the comment
I'm sure you could have found enough quality fallen trees to build your cabin without having to fell living trees.
I've been utilizing the fallen ones as well but I strongly prefer the standing ones for a multitude of reasons. Thank you for the comment.
By the time the video gets to 1:09:36 it is more than apparent Mr. 'Backwoods Solicitude' avails himself extensively of product that is NOT conducive to backwoods solitude, including plywood and tools, which are battery reliant. Or how about all those factory made screws? Question: How does one recharge those batteries which are relied upon extensively in the video to construct that 8' x 8' hut? For those not mathematically inclined, 8' x 8'' is 64 sq ft. That's one f**k of a mess made for such a humble sized abode. Whoops, another trifling sum of misery/detail to add to the foot of the account.
Thank you for the comments.
Does your drill have a cold? Or are you literally stripping EVERY SCREW that you drive in? Lol.
Lol, I like the drill with a cold comment. I use the drill for drilling and an impact driver for screws so maybe the sound of that threw you off. Thanks for commenting.
