Blacksmithing - Hydraulic Press or Pneumatic Power Hammer?

This is a quick test of my 30 ton Anyang STP-S Hydraulic Press compared to my Anyang ST 25 kg Pneumatic Power Hammer.
In the video I'm forging a piece of EN19 (4140) steel which is 50mm diameter by 2" long into what will be a flatter for the power hammer.
In my view the 25 kg Power Hammer has more percussive force than the 30 ton Hydraulic Press has squishable force. It seems as though the hydraulic press gets to a certain surface area it can squish to and no more. Moving the work piece in and out of the die to reduce surface area helps...
I must apologise for the image quality - as the forge room was warming up I think the camera was starting to fog - the camera had been left in the room overnight and was 4 degrees centigrade.

  • For those of us who have neighbors the hammer is not even an option. Press all the way. Quieter, faster, more better. Forge On!!!

  • Ram speed needs increasing !

    • Sometimes I think the ram speed is too fast! I could do with fitting an adjustable flow control valve....

  • good video to compare the hammer and press via forging sight, the hammer can form the working piece even when it's temperature less than 1000 degree by blow and blow. but press good to make the large forming at beginning.
